Dear Wendy

UPDATE: Can We Sponsor Your Class for the Holidays?

Due to a quick and fantastic response, I am not longer asking for additional participants. Those who have already emailed me will be hearing from me shortly. Thank you!!

GiftThe holidays are soon upon us and I would love to have 1-3 classes or groups of young people (under 18) from lower-income/ under-privileged communities that we might help spread some holiday cheer to. Last year, the DW community sponsored a class from a low-income school in New Orleans, buying them lots of books for Christmas. It went really well! I’ve contacted the same teacher and she’s eager to participate again this year. Are there any other teachers or social workers who would like to get involved? Please feel free to share this with any friends or loved ones who might be interested. Email me at [email protected] with “Holiday Class” in the subject line to find out how to participate.

    Great! Excited for this again.

Question for you guys: I have a TON of very barely used (looks brand new) children’s things (books, stuffed animals, toys, shoes, etc.) that I’m looking to get rid of asap. The toy drives near me require new things. Any ideas on where I can give these?

We always take our books to the public library, they’re thrilled to get them!

I usually do that. I just keep thinking these are good holiday gifts for a family near me that can’t afford any. I like giving to actual people more than organizations that will sell the stuff and use that $ for charity. Idk why. More personal I guess?

I gotcha! I thought you were just needing to get rid of it. Do any of the local churches accept donations like that?

They usually like new stuff too. They rejected a bike that was used ONCE a couple years ago. Wtf. I was so mad. Any kid would’ve loved that bike for Xmas. I got a shitty old one from a garage sale for Xmas once and loved it.

Yeah, I feel like so many places are so worried about being subjected to lawsuits these days that they only take new stuff. It’s a shame, because what are you supposed to do with it? My last suggestion is just to start asking around. I had an extra infant car seat that was new but not in a box or anything, so of course I couldn’t donate it. I asked a few friends and one knew of a girl who needed one for her new baby and didn’t have the money to buy one, and it all worked out!

Try craigslist free postings. You can post any item you want in the “free” section.

We take donations like that all the time. I’m betting agencies similar to mine would take them. We use them for kids to play with while they’re here, plus if a family comes in with nothing we have a small supply of gently used children’s items to give to them. We don’t use things like that for Christmas typically, but we do that all the time for our normal operations.

I’ll have to call around. I guess I just was thinking of the toy drives that require new stuff. Thanks TA.

Many police departments take stuffed animals and they put them in squads for officers to give to children who are victims/witnesses/etc in many situations (car crashes, domestic violence, parent death, etc). For the rest of the things, many shelters in my area will take them and will use them to give to children who are in the shelters with their parents.

Is there a mom’s Facebook group for your town/city? I’m in one for mine and a lot of people offer stuff like that up for free to good homes.

Do you have any organizations near you that help immigrants or refugees? That would be a good place to donate, and it would help families with their transition in a tangible way.

Update: I heard back from every place I tried with all of your suggestions. No one wants any of it. Am I irrational in that I find that disgusting. I know I would’ve LOVED free, barely used stuff when I was broke.

Have you looked at the Foster Care Services in your area? My experience is they will take lightly used items.

Another thought, maybe a domestic violence shelter? It most likely wouldn’t be for Christmas presents, but I think they generally take stuff for people who arrive with little to nothing.
