Yesterday was one of those days where I just sort of ran out of things to do with Jackson. We had plans to hang out at my friend’s house (her baby boy is a week older than Jackson), but her husband got sick and she needed to take care of him. Jack had already been out on a three-hour walk that morning with his babysitter, and the two of us had already spent a few hours playing with all his favorite toys. Drew has dinner with his dad every Wednesday evening, so without my usual late afternoon relief, Jack and I still had a couple more hours to kill on our own before bath-book-bottle-bedtime. Thank God there was Nina Simone to the rescue!
Now, Jackson doesn’t get to look at screens very often. We keep the TV off during the day — unless he’s in his room napping at which time I might take a peek at the “Today” show or something — and I usually shield him from the glare of my laptop. But yesterday I made an exception while we watched vintage Nina Simone videos for a few minutes. Like this one. Which should be a mandatory inclusion in the class of Everything That is Awesome that all children should be required to take, as far as I’m concerned.
What would you include in your course of Everything That is Awesome? Besides the entire series of “Breaking Bad,” because, I mean, obviously.

This video has been making the rounds, and it’s easy to understand why. The only thing glaringly missing is: “Is mercury in retrograde? It seems like mercury’s in retrograde.”
