DearWendy Meetups: Chicago

If you don’t read the message board regularly, be sure to at least check the Meetup forum to see if other readers are meeting up in your neck of the woods. Several cities have already had informal get-togethers, including Chicago, where the photo above was snapped. Read what Addie Pray has to say about their evening:

Last week’s First Official Dear Wendy Meetup in Chicago was a success! I twisted Wendy’s arm a bit to let me post about it here – you know, so I could share a picture and brag a bit. Here’s a photo of us for you. From left to right: Lurker 1, MaterialsGirl, LadyInPurpleNotRed, a cutout of Wendy’s face (no, not creepy), me (Addie Pray), JillieZ, and Lurker 2. We ate pizza, drank wine, and were very merry. It wasn’t awkward, and no one turned out to be (too) crazy. We talked about relationships, crazy roommates, and more. I can’t get into the specifics because, you know, what happens at a Dear Wendy Meetup stays at a Dear Wendy Meetup. I hope your Meetups are just as fun!

I thought I’d use this public forum to also remind Chicagoans (and nearby Wisconsinites?) of our next Meetup on Saturday, March 3rd, at 1 pm at Lady Gregory’s, 5254 North Clark Street. I’ll be there! But more importantly … so will Wendy! Come and let’s shower her with love and adoration.

Yes, I will be there! No need to shower me with anything, but it would be lovely to meet some of you. Also, to anyone who is on the fence about attending a meetup because you’re afraid it will be awkward or weird or whatever, I’ll say this: I’ve met lots of internet pals in real life and I have never regretted it. Some people I’ve met from the internet have become my closest friends! Others have proven to simply be good connections. Seriously, you never know who might help you find your next job or next apartment or next … boyfriend. Connections are good to make. Friends are great to have. DearWendy readers are good people. Why not meet some of them if you have the chance?

Yay! Hope everyone is doing well. I’ll reiterate what AddiePray said (and yes, we actually did call her AddiePray at the meetup.. teehee): everyone was very nice and no, not creepy. Maybe it’s because all Chicago people are awesome? I’m not sure, but we definitely had a lovely bunch of people that I would be glad to meet up with again. It really wasn’t different from meeting up with strangers for a run club or a sport and social club.

As I said on the thread that was deleted: I need more pizza and wine in my life. I think I’ve found a willing participant (or two).

See I hate Chipotle, but I LOVE Qdoba. Weird. I’m glad i’m not the only one that immediately cancels out my great work outs. I read flashcards while walking on an incline on the treadmill for amost 2 hours yesterday! Time really flies when you’re having fun! (barf). But as soon as I left I ate a burrito the size of my face. And then I finished ALL of the valentines day candy. Awesome. Oh and since I woke up feeling gross and like a fatty, I decided it would be best if I ate a cheesy hot dog for breakfast. This full time studying thing is doing irreversible damage to my waist line.

Same idea..walk up to a big counter and order what you want…fast food mexican… They have whole wheat tortilla’s too. I like their steak quesedilla….and I know the whole wheat probably doesn’t make that much of a difference physically, but the mental guilt it relieves is substantial….don’t burst my bubble anyone.

Ha! I always get the chicken queso burrito. Every single time. But sometimes I get crazy and mix up my sauces. Like last night I got lots of the tomato salsa and extra sour cream, but other times i’ll get the corn salsa. You know I’m not totally boring.

I used to go to Qdoba (2+ years of going once a week), but then they opened a Chipotle 4 doors down… I’ve been converted for the past few months, though I might switch to rotating between the two, becasue I feel bad for leaving Qdoba…
I get the veggie burrito at both places without cheese and sour cream, so I feel like it’s really not that bad for me.

I had a funny/awkward encounter with Blago a couple of years ago. I was waiting to cross the street up in Lincoln Square and he was standing on the opposite side of the street, with with his wife, waiting to cross the street too. He looks like a walking cartoon with that head of hair, so of course I couldn’t take my eyes off him. The light turned green and we crossed in front of each other and I was staring at him and he was staring at me. I’m not sure why but I couldn’t take my eyes off him. I mean, would you be able to take your eyes off a cartoon character walking down the street? No. So when we passed I had to look at him over my shoulder. He was doing the same. Then I got to the other side of the street and I stopped and was just watching them. But he stopped too and now we were both just staring at each other from across the street. I got really nervous like “why am I staring at Blago? This is weird, but I can’t stop, but I’m just standing here and this is weird – do something – do something!” But I didn’t know what to do so I just stared at him and then I gave him a thumbs up. (Why? I have no fucking idea.) Then he threw his head back laughing and gave me a thumb’s up. That’s the first time I think I realized his wife was standing right there and I just scurried off. Awkward!

Umm, weird question. Do the ads change on the website based on what you write (or is this just a facebook thing)? The reason I ask is because I’m getting ads that relate to what I posted on our secret Valentines day post! It’s just a little weird that I think a website knows my secrets! 😛

It’s called re-targeting. There are websites that hide a pixel in their code. So if you visit one of those websites, it puts a cookie on your computer and their ads are then shown to you everywhere you go.

Likewise with search retargeting. You search a specific keyword and after you’ve typed it in, you’re flagged with that cookie and begin to see related ads.

And gmail scans your emails to show you relevant ads too.

That’s effin creepy. Like implant a computer in your head creepy. This is just one more reason that I would never text a nekid pic to anyone ever, what you put through technology stays around in some weird alternative universe. Okay, well clearly I know nothing about technology or computers, but they scare me sometimes. I am scared to put things online because they stay there f.o.r.e.v.e.r. I am scared to send pics because they probably exist somewhere in AT&T’s picture bank. Did you hear about advertising companies stealing people’s facebook pictures and using them in their advertisements? Makes me so glad my FB is deactivated. We live in a creepy, creepy society.

February 28th and 29th, but then the first week of March I’m going on a little mini vacay…but I am good to go pretty much anytime after the 10th! Well except that my parents are coming into town I *think* the weekend of the 17th, but it’s pretty hard to get those retired people to nail down a date. So I guess I would be best with maybe the weekend of the 24th or 31st or 10th, in that order, haha. And I vote for happy hour. Or day drinks. It can get pretty warm in March so maybe if we’re lucky we can do an Saturday outdoor patio day drinking session!

I can´t believe I missed another secret post.
I´m on vacation, wasn´t planning on touching the computer, but no we´re back at our cabin (after a lovely morning sight-seeing), my husband´s napping, the girls are planning, so I had to see what I was missing out on! Too much from the looks of things.
      Thanks for asking. 🙂

Good question! I have been missing her too. It’s unacceptable when DWCSF drop off the face of the earth without warning.

I will literally be in Chicago less than 24 hours before the next Chicago meetup. I’ll be dropping my boyfriend off at the airport on that Friday so he can go have an adventure halfway across the world for three months. Then that night I’m headed to Madison, WI to visit my brother for a couple days as I drive back to Minnesota…so unfortunately going to the meetup won’t be possible for me. 🙁 Not to mention I don’t think I’d be very much fun because I’ll probably be miserable that first day that my boyfriend is gone.

Stick around for lunch on Sat. – we will say wise things to make you feel better. Then drive to Madison Sat. afternoon. And you can go back to Mpls on Sunday. Voila!

At my studio you’re allowed 1 miss per 30 days, but you have to do a double one day to make up for it. You shoudl ask if you can do that.

Have you ever been to a posture clinic? My favorite (read: Cute) teacher is doing one next Satruday and I”m thinking about going, but almost 4 hours in the hot room seems a little excessive to me…

No, I don’t think mine offers a posture clinic! That would be so great. Last night I went to the last class of the day and the instructor stuck around after for like 30 minutes and let me pepper her with questions about my form. I’m excited to try out my new and improved standing bow and standing head to knee tonight. God those are two bitches of poses. I suck at standing head to knee. My best pose is half-moon. Well, all those bendy poses after the first breather exercise. You? Oh, and half locust is a bitch too.

But here’s what you need to do – it’s simple: Pick a restaurant and a date and a time and don’t ask for suggestions. Bam. Then, you tell everyone that everyone is coming, even though no one has said they are coming. Then, everybody comes. (Or 6, in the case of our meetup last week.)

LOL I love your meetup suggestions! I run an actual meet-up in the area and that logic works all the time. I don’t know why I haven’t tried it here. I once asked for suggestions on where/when to go for brunch and that lasted for weeks on end and the planning went nowhere.

Take the bull by the horns! People like being told where to go rather than put in effort to plan, haha, unfortunate, but true…just gently remind them that if they refuse the opportunity to have a say…they refuse the right to complain about the plan.

Oh that seems like so much fun! I’ve visited Chicago several times and really like the city – I wish I could make the March meeting but Chicago is a 12 hr drive from where I live (Fayetteville, Arkansas) and I can’t afford a flight right now. 🙁 Bummer. I’m pretty sure no one else lives near here.

Chicagoans: I have a good friend, female age 50, in Evanston ready to start dating this year. Attorney, proud liberal, classical music lover, great wit, full of energy, mother of two teenagers. If you know of any compatible men in same age range, who are legally and emotionally available, let me know!!

There seems to be little interest in an LA meet up. Too bad. The Chicago one looks and sounds like it was a super fun and groovy time… Love the Wendy cut-out. So NOT creepy, but zany and silly instead! 🙂
