Even though I’m pretty sure I’m the only Alaskan (Anchorage) here, I’ll throw it out there. If anyone happens to come up for a visit, please let me know. I would be more than happy to give anyone the “locals” tour. Depending on your budget (and time of year), I can get a friend of mine to take you on a fishing charter (ocean, river or lake). Depending on the time of year, for free, we can take a walk on the Matanuska Glacier out in the Matanuska Valley (about 75-90 minute drive outside of Anchorage). Hiking, gold-panning, or just hang out in Anchorage itself. Anchorage has some decent restaurants, movie theatres, music, arts, bars, interesting wildlife (we have moose that wander it’s streets) and local-life. |

I really wish I could take you up on that! I heard many things about how beautiful Alaska is and how the wilderness is really breath taking. |

Alaska is very beautiful cookie. I was there on a cruise in June and the scenery there is very pretty. Don’t think I’d be able to handle the winters though. |

Brad: The winters are something. Each area of Alaska is different from other areas of itself that you’d have a hard time believing we’re all the same state. Big Miracle was filmed exclusively in Alaska. So was the new Nic Cage/John Cusack film (not sure what the title will be). Granted, I’m not going to go see Big Miracle. Might see the other one, as a rental. When you know the people portrayed in the movie, it takes the thrill out of seeing it. |

It was a good trip but dear lord avoid the crusies!! I don’t care which cruiseline you go on, from what I experienced on mine and from what I’ve heard from other people on different cruiselines, they’re all floating nursing homes. And while I mean no disrespect to senior citizens, being confined in such close quarters with SO many people 40+ years my senior (and so few that were near my age) was … uncomfortable to put it lightly. If you’re below the age of say 60, I’d recommend you skip the cruise and see Alaska in another form. (seriously on a cruise of like 2,000 people I think there were less than 20, 20 somthings). |

*laugh* Yeah, the cruises are total geezer-traps. I’ve heard that Disney is going to start making port at some of the panhandle towns. *shrug* It’s always better to have a local take you around to some of the good sights away from the ocean, or even on the ocean, away from the senior nap spots. |

AKchic: I’ll actually be in Anchorage mid June this year. My Dad and I have fished the Little Su 4 or 5 times now – and this year my son talked his way into going as well. The only roadblock now would be my Dads health, he was diagnosed with cancer last year so we weren’t able to make the trip. I’d love some suggestions as to where else to fish, and eat, not as interested in sight seeing with my Dads health being what it is. I’ll bug you for recommendations the closer we get to June, if you don’t mind. |

I’ve been to Alaska twice even spent a summer month in Fairbanks when my dad was stationed there. I was only 7 but the memories have endured the span in superb condition. Four years ago we cruised down from Anchorage to Vancouver which left me with a vow to see more of this beautiful state and meet up with AKchic. |

Woo Hoo! Visitors! McLovin – if you’re planning on staying mainly towards Anchorage, the only place to really fish is Ship Creek (combat fishing at it’s finest). Couple hour drive south, you could head to the Kenai (or Seward/Homer for halibut fishing), or couple hours north and head to the Big Su, Little Su, Matanuska, tons of places. It really depends on how far out you want to go. And if you want to drive or fly. Or boat. Could talk to a few people and see about deep-sea fishing. June is too late in the season for crabbing, and not knowing how old your son is, he may be too young for that kind of thing anyways. |

Just wanted to add that I’ve had halibut caught around Homer-and um it changed my life. I hated fish until then. Oh man, now I’m missing me some halibut! |

I’ve got 75lbs of halibut in my freezer. Along with 32lbs of cod, 12lbs of rockfish, and a lone red salmon. Oh, and half a crab. I do need to stock up on more moose. I miss moose hot dogs. And moose meat balls. |
