Just let me know a few days in advance so I can thaw out the fish in time! |

I appreciate the generosity! I’d love to be able to stay in Anchorage for more then 5 days, but my little-mans summer is already booked up with basketball camps. He’s 14, which would make me 42(holy shit!), and every bit the Hillbilly when it comes to all things hunting and fishing. He got his first buck last year, which was slightly bigger than my black lab, so he thinks that he’s the shit now. Laugh all you want, but I’m all about warm comfy beds and nice restaurants when I’m on vacation so I’m not venturing too far from Anchorage! I’m all for day trips though and the locals tour sounds awesome! And I’m sure we could find something “essentially Oregon” to bring you as a thank-you. |

My first husband is now 42. I can’t really say much, considering I’m not even 30 yet. For shooting, I’ve got a Thompson, a nice Winchester single-barrel shotgun, a Makarov 9mm, an old .22 revolver, a S&W .40 (old CA highway patrolman’s service piece) and who knows what else I’ll buy before then. *shrug* I’ve been looking, but haven’t really seeing anything I like. Sold off some of my other guns over the years. For restaurants, it all depends on what kind of food you like. Fiori D’Italia is an awesome Italian restaurant, and decently priced. Romano’s is more expensive. Gwennie’s is “Alaskan”, but it’s more family fare, and it’s claim to fame is the building is one of the original Spenard Road whore houses. There’s some expensive downtown places (I’ve never really been, mainly because I don’t like dressing up, and these newer places actually WANT you to do that). Our first Olive Garden opened up last Friday. Since I’ve been to one before in NJ, I’m not enthused and have no plans of going. |

AKchic, I just saw a job posting in Fairbanks. Can you offer an opinion on the city? My main concern in the temperature and the lack of sunlight in the winters. |

I’ve never lived there. I can put you in contact with a few locals, and a recent relocation (a friend from Anchorage married an AF soldier and they PCSed up there recently). It does get really, really cold there in the winter. we’re talking freeze-the-tires-to-the-ground-if-you-aren’t-careful kind of cold. |

Wow. Seeing how excited you were for 15 degrees (above 0) made me realize how far apart -50 and 15 are. That like 15 and 80. That’s the problem, I can’t even fathom those depths of cold. Thanks for replying. I recently got a job in DC (not a dream job) so I can be a lot more selective in my search. I think it’d be too much for me. |

Yeah, I hadn’t checked this area recently because I knew that nobody would be in this area anytime soon. *laugh* I just stopped to see if there was anything in the Colorado Springs area during the next week (the SO and youngest are going to be there from the 11th to the 16th). Saw that there had been a reply and checked it out. We do get people telling us that the 70F temps we get feel hotter than the 70F temps they have in their locales. We aren’t sure exactly why, but it could be because we are tilted closer to the sun (however marginally). Or because there isn’t as much smog to filter the rays. Or something to do with humidity or something. I’m not quite sure. I just know that at 70, I feel like I’m melting. |

I went to Alaska on a cruise when I was about 8 I think. It was a geezer-trap, but I just remember that Alaska was beautiful. So, so, so beautiful. And the totem poles, I remember that too. And being on a glacier. Hopefully someday I’ll get to go back. Someday I’d really like to see the Northern Lights, but I’d like to see that without freezing my butt off. But then again, I’m from Texas and it barely ever gets below 50 degrees most of the time. Just a few days out of the year we get below 50 here in Houston. I think this winter has been pretty mild, but we’re finally getting a decent amount of rain. Thank goodness!!!!!! It’s late, and I’m slightly drunk from birthday celebrations…..I should go to sleeep….. |

*laugh* I can get you pictures and video of the northern lights. Hell, I can be a smart-ass and take a picture of Northern Lights Boulevard if you’d like. |

Actually I love reading DW, and judging by my handle, you can tell I am an AKchic as well! I was born and raised in Juneau, but I live in Fairbanks! Wish I could come to a meet up, maybe sometime this summer. Always glad to see an Alaskan girl kicking a**! |
