I’m with you BGM. The finale was a bit of a snore. I felt that actually had the episodes backwards. The angles wouldn’t work with Joan as partner, but Lane hanging himself was quite profound. I for one like being left on the edge of my seat on a season finale. I like to talk about it and actually chase down a couple of blogs to see what people think the next season will start. This one ended and I just didn’t care afterwards.
June 14, 2012 at 2:36 pm #30000However, I did like the song that played in the final minutes of the episode.
June 14, 2012 at 3:13 pm #30004Now I’m just really pissed the missed a great opportunity to show how people dealt with (or ignored / lied about) suicide back in the day, like BGM said. That would have been a great discussion!
I too missed Betty this season. I liked the development of Sally though. And I agree re: whiny Megan. Also, I’m tired of looking at her mouth. (Mean, I know. But you’re allowed to be mean when they’re starts on tv.)
June 15, 2012 at 5:44 pm #30279I really like January Jones as that character, and it seems to oddly hip to hate her. I ran into January once in Los Feliz and even rudely interrupted her conversation with whoever she was with (I didn’t recognize the other women) to tell her how much I enjoy her and the show. She was certainly gracious to me. She smiled brightly — thanked me for the compliment, and said it’s the greatest job she’s ever had. I didn’t linger and that was that. But she certainly wasn’t the ice-queen people like to say she is.
June 15, 2012 at 5:45 pm #30280PS to Will.i.am — yeah, that was a nifty song choice…
June 23, 2012 at 3:48 am #31303One thing that freaked me out about Commissions and Fees — aside from Lane’s death — was that so much of hit curiously close to home. Not one, but two scenes were not only shot in my neighborhood, but in two places I go all the time…
The opening with Don at the barber? That was shot at Sweeney Todd’s. It’s a five minute walk from my place and where I have been getting my hair chopped for over ten years. It’s an amazing place. It’s pretty much camera ready. The Art Department didn’t have to do a thing… Even the vintage displays in the background? That’s part of their decor. It’s been open since WW2! And deliberately stays old school.
And then, about twenty minutes later… Sally, Megan and her Dark Shadows failure friend all have coffee at Figaro Cafe. It’s only right across the street from my apartment. And not only do I go there at least one a week for happy hour, but more often than not, we sit in the booth that shot in because it has the best view of the joint… The didn’t change a thing here, either.
It was so fun to see two of my own haunts in my favorite show!!

Wow, somehow Mad Men seems even MORE obsessed with death and suicide THIS season.
Don’s botched Hawaiian ad campaign is literally one of my fantasy exits only I would (sadly) never have such stylish clothes to leave strewn about the beach. Jumping Off Point indeed! Eerie. Very eerie… Meanwhile, last season, Lane’s failed attempt was my top solution. Carbon Monoxide is the least messy, least painless, and most surefire way to go. (So long as you don’t have a Jaguar!)
Other thoughts on the start of Season 6:
I loved the bigger offices!
I loathed the bigger hair and beards! Sigh… it’s all very accurate to the period and all good things must come to an end, but damn so many guys went from HOT to NOT… Stan. Abe… Tragic!
NEED more Joan. Grrrrrrr!
Happy to see so much of Peggy!!
I actually LIKED the Betty story right down to her horribly twisted rape jokes. That they were such misfires made them all the more real. Betty is simply NOT funny. And I loved that her sincere attempt to be so proved so horribly tone-deaf. So real! Hah! Trust me, I hear so many bad jokes.
The crazy “heart attack” FLASHBACK structure was truly remarkable. Jarring and even confusing. I loved it, loved it. Loved it.
Of course! Don is back to his bad, bad ways — but MY! What a clever reveal of all that info! And with who? Yikes.
Nobody in the world of recaps caught this. But when Don’s neighbor dropped by the office He and Dawn (the black secretary) seemed to know one another. Heck, she seemed to almost think he came by to see her… Interesting. I predict that they are having an affair. Bittergaymark my words! Remember. I said it first.
Poor Roger. I really felt for him this episode.
Lots of great groundwork laid here. Interested to see where it all goes.
April 9, 2013 at 6:06 am #66326I wondered the same about Dawn – so bittergaymark my words I said it here second!
I’m so excited about this season too. I loved it all, down to Don’s choice of affair – love it when he goes for the smart brunettes who inspire him.
April 9, 2013 at 4:42 pm #66485Interesting! I thought that at the first viewing, but the second time through I thought she was just flummoxed from having someone there who wasn’t on the schedule. That was a kickass couple hours of TV. I love the recaps too, there are so many details I never get them the first time around. For example, I didn’t catch the sound of the ocean when Don was staring out his window in Manhattan. Who wants to make predictions?!
April 10, 2013 at 2:56 pm #66700You could be right, Taylor. I need to watch it again.
What fascinates me now is that the show is now in 1968. So, will it ultimately reach into 1970 a bit in its final season next year? If so, how fascinating — as it will then reach the year of my birth. Yep, 10/20/1970. Bittergaymark IS old, folks. Sigh…
April 15, 2013 at 8:39 am #67418I actually like Betty as a character! I like how Betty tried to go find that girl – it showed that she has compassion. And Joan too. And Sally. Megan is blah. I think I just like the snarky characters lol.
April 21, 2013 at 9:43 pm #68749I love Betty. She’s just so ridiculous and real. I know women that insecure and weird. 20 minutes live chat?
