My boyfriend lives in another country. I don’t get to see him very often. I’m having trouble weighing my desire to see him all the time with the practicality of how much it costs.
Let’s say I can get a plane ticket for about $900 (which I can afford–I’m not rich, but I get whatever I want, because I don’t want a lot). In your opinion, how long would I have to be able to go for in order to make that worthwhile? I can get four days, five days, seven days, nine days off work without any difficulty or taking more than a day or two of vacation (flexible scheduling).
I know only I can make the decision for myself, but I’m interested in other thoughts.
June 14, 2012 at 12:43 pm #29975I would take the maximum amount of days possible, to make it more worth your while.
June 14, 2012 at 12:44 pm #29976I think you answered your own question. You can afford to get what you want. You want to visit your boyfriend. Take 9 days and go have fun.
June 14, 2012 at 1:00 pm #29978Yeah, I’d take the 9 days– then it’s like, $100 a day? (not accurate, with probably other expenses, but that’s I would justify it to myself)
June 14, 2012 at 1:14 pm #29979I think it depends on the length of the flight, and the time change/how fast you adjust to time changes. If you adjust relatively quickly, going for a shorter amount of time can be worth it, and I know at least for me, it is sometimes better to balance going a couple times for a shorter visit rather than one long visit with a bigger gap in the middle. (My husband lives in London, so I know how you feel!)
June 14, 2012 at 1:20 pm #29980I agree with the others above – go for as long as you can!
June 14, 2012 at 2:18 pm #29996Hey I can relate to this as I live in Europe and absolutely love visiting my friends and family in the USA. When I first moved here round trip tickets were $850-$1000, now they are $1200-$1600 (gas prices grr) While I make good money those plane tickets are a significant cost to me.
I have 29 days vacation a year, which I could take off all in a row if I really wanted to, but instead I go home for 3 weeks in Dec/Jan and 3 weeks in August. Its worth it to me to be there for both times, and 3 weeks is plenty to make then $1200 feel worth it.
I would say actually 9 days is bare minimum to make a $900 plane ticket worth it, especially with travel time and jet lag and the like.
June 14, 2012 at 3:15 pm #30005@Zepp, what do you do? And how do you get to do it in Austria? And how did you get to do what you do in Austria? (I think those are 3 separate questions but ehh)
June 14, 2012 at 3:16 pm #30006@ Not Wendy, I’d go for the maximum amount of time too.
June 14, 2012 at 3:35 pm #30008@Addiepray I do clinical research project management for a pharmaceutical company. I came to Austria to “go to grad school” (aka any excuse to get a visa to be with my boyfriend who is Austrian), and I was *extremely* lucky to get a work permit after I graduated. Technically I was able to get the work permit because of the new immigration laws and the fact that I worked in biotech/research, but the real reason is that my hiring manager is Australian and related to my immigrant plight and was willing to go through the ropes to get me the permit. I work for an American company, and all of the ‘official’ work in pharmaceuticals has to be in English anyway, so it’s perfect.
June 14, 2012 at 3:55 pm #30013Go for the maximum amount of days possible.
June 14, 2012 at 5:01 pm #30025I kind of want an Austrian boyfriend. Does he talk like Arnold?
June 14, 2012 at 5:30 pm #30037yes! he does. Not all Austrians do (it depends what part they are from).. sadly his accent isn’t as strong since we speak English most of the time. But the way we met was that his family moved to the US when he was 12 and he spoke NO english at all and went straight into school. He was young, he learned English quick but he still had that super strong accent his whole 5 years in the US, and all our friends LOVE to tell stories about him using the accent the whole time. they are big arnold fans too naturally! lol
June 14, 2012 at 5:47 pm #30039does he have big biceps too? i’d be ok with a boyfriend like that. budj broke up with me, did you see? i’m over it.
