What's your dream job?

1) what was your dream job as a child?
2) what’s your dream job now? Are you going to one day fulfill that dream?

For me, #1 always was to be a professional equestrian – going to the Olympics to do show jumping. I was on the right track for that until my mental illness emerged and I wasn’t provided treatment.

And #2 is to be a pharmaceutical compounding technician, and in 10 years to be a SAHM who home schools her children. I’m currently in the process of interviewing for a tech position in a compounding pharmacy, so I’m on the right track!

1) FBI agent or CIA (lulz)…then when I started getting good at swimming I wanted to go to the olympics…that lasted one year…haha…
2) Obvi (since I talk about it here often) to be in a touring band…no matter what kind of success…just need a deal that pays off my debts and I’m there.

My dream job as a child was to an actress. I was just convinced that my destiny in life was to co-star in a movie opposite Leonardo Dicaprio LOL So much so, I convinced my grandmother to agree to move with me to LA after I graduated high school. She was retired already and was down for the adventure, but wasn’t too upset when I decided to go to college instead.

My dream job now is to own and operate my own preschool. I’m going back to school for that now and just joined a mentor program, so I will hopefully (!) be fulfilling that dream in the next 2.5-3 years. I figured this is a perfect way to combine my passion for a creative and culturally diverse educational environment for kids, while having a job that would allow me to see my own children and not have to pay crazy child care costs!

As a child was to be a fireman.

As an adult, I never had a set career. I kind of fell into what I’m doing now and ended up enjoying/loving it. Here I am now, a Senior Loan Analyst/learning Compliance.

Dolphin trainer, which I did something similar but I never did work for Sea World!

And now I work in the data management side of marine science. At this point I’m very happy and I think it’s a perfect fit for me.

As a kid/teen, I always told people I wanted to be a journalist or a lawyer. At the time, I thought all lawyers did was argue and debate with people all day long, so it sounded like my dream job! Ha. I probably would have made a good lawyer, but I had NO interest in the mundane aspects of the job. Even up to a few years ago, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I thought I’d go into Public Relations, since that’s what I majored in. Then I thought I’d like to work in PR for a museum, to combine my communications degree with my art history minor (and I love art). But I just never feel extreme passion for either of those things.

Now, as most of you know, I want to be a therapist. But more than that, I want to be a widely-known therapist who authors national bestsellers and who does speaking tours; and I also would love to open a relationship bootcamp where people (especially teen and young adult women) get sent for a crash-course in independence and healthy relationships. I’m so excited to be my own boss one day.

Will, I wanted to be a fire (wo)man when I was little, too! Though, I think it was largely because my favorite color was red and I wanted to drive the big red truck :)

I’m already working towards my dream job, which is doing research in atmospheric science. Well, I guess I’m sort of already there, except it’s hard to consider it that way when I haven’t finished the phd yet.

As a child…i don’t remember wanting to be anything. Now i REALLY wanted to be a Meteorologist/Storm chaser, ever since grade 7/8 i have loved weather and storms and tornadoes, and i almost fulfilled my dream. Last year for my first year of University i was in the Atmospheric Sciences program to become a meteorologist, but unfortunately i was unable to keep up with the theory and math, i have always struggled with math and physics and i really thought i could succeed in it this time. However now i am doing my second favorite thing, environmental science, i am working on a double major in Environmental Science and Community Design, so its not so bad. Plus i have on my bucket list to see a tornado, so i have every intention on doing that before i die:P

Hey Cleopatra, I got into meteorology for the same reasons – well, probably most of my colleagues did too, haha. I do go chasing in the spring, and have seen 2 tornadoes so far, which is as awesome as I always imagined. Someday when you have extra money to do it, there are companies that take people on storm chases. It’s a bit expensive, and of course no guarantee of seeing something, but it’s much safer and saner than going out on your own without really knowing your stuff :)

From as early as I can remember (age 5 probably) through junior high / high school I wanted to go into politics and eventually become the President of the United States. (Loser!) My kindergarten teacher said I used to worry that there wouldn’t be a coin for me because they all seemed to be taken already with other presidents’ faces. Somewhere in high school I decided I wanted to be a doctor. I had just torn my ACL (for the first time) – so, you know, I basically already *was* a doctor. Plus, I liked wearing scrubs. (All the right reasons to go into medicine.)

In college I realized I sucked at science so I probably couldn’t be a doctor anymore. With nothing to fall back on, I became a lawyer. Sigh.

But secretly? I’ve always thought it would be really, really fun to teach junior high or high school math – algebra and calculus are my favorite subjects. And game theory. I took a series of probability and stochastic process classes in college and that was really neat but hard, but game theory was the most fun – math + games = fun!

But I’m still a freakin’ attorney. Sigh.

From the age of when I could think about it until I graduated high school I wanted to go into the air force and be a fighter pilot but I failed the eye test (and they weren’t allowing laser eye surgery yet) so that shattered all my hopes and dreams. :( Ended up majoring in business because I figured that would open a lot of doors and because I thought I might like to a financial planner. Did a summer internship at a insurance company and MAN did I ever discover that sales IS NOT for me. Been working at an average government job last couple of years doing contracting. It’s a good job but it makes me want to poke my eyes out some days just for a little mental stimulation.

I think now I’ve decided that I’d like to get into computer forensics. I’m actually about to start working on my entrance essay to the school I’m applying to (GMU). Shame it will probably take me 3-3.5 years to complete it (depends on if they offer the prereqs during the summer or not) but at least I now feel like there’s an escape raft to my current career field of contracting.

I wanted to be a pediatrician since I was a child but in high school I realized that math and science just didn’t click for me and I gave up that dream. Plus the idea of having to do autopsies grossed me out. I then wanted to be a librarian but the market is tough in the public library sector so I’m postponing that dream for now. Now I’m studying Accounting which I never in a million years would have considered as a teenager. It’s not so bad and I love records and records management so it’s an okay fit for me. The math I’ve encountered so far isn’t so bad either.

I wouldn’t mind being one of those women that get to attend New York/London/Paris Fashion Week. I’m not high fashion at all but it seems like fun to me. Also, I wouldn’t mind getting paid to travel and write about my adventures but who wouldn’t love that? Sadly I’m no Rick Steves and he has his niche on lockdown basically.

When I was younger my dream job was to be a veterinarian, but that’s only because I just knew they got to work with animals and animals were cute and fuzzy; I had no idea what it really entailed. I also thought about wanting to be an actress because I thought being famous would be neat. Again, NO idea what it would take.

Now I’d like to work as an auditor in government accountability, either in accountability for how government funds are spent (like grants or in schools, for example) or for government agencies themselves. Ideally, I would love to work for a state agency, an IG, or the GAO.
After doing that for awhile, I would like to work as a consultant for programs that receive the funds, and help them to make sure they’re up to snuff.
I’ve also thought about forensic accounting for the FBI or something cool like that, but I’m way more interested in government spending. And I’m currently working on my master’s in accounting, have experience in grants management, so that’s well underway. Just have to start looking for internships soon :)

@rachel I am extremely jealous! I am sure it took lots of hard work and dedication to get where you are right now, i wish i had the intellect to be able to be in the same field. Alas. But i have heard of tour groups that did storm chasing and have always flirted with that idea, as i wouldn’t trust myself to try chasing on my own:P And storm season is on its way too! What are you currently doing in the Atmospheric Science program you are in? Are you doing research with the school or independent work? Just curious:)
