I think journalist… i’m a super curious person by nature and I like to tell stories. But the super competitive and years of paying your dues for low pay with the small possibility of real success part really isn’t appealing. |

When I was younger, I wanted to be a lawyer. I’ve never really “grown up”. As I’ve chronologically aged, I’ve worked in many different fields, and slowly gotten into politics. I got into writing (school papers from elementary on) and stayed with it, and moved into the substance abuse rehab/mental health field with some emphasis on the darker side of life (DV, prison, abuses, women’s issues, etc). It all helps towards my political aspirations. I’ve also been working on my book. Eventually, I’ll have enough for my tell-all, but a few people need to die off first. Give it 10 years and old age should get rid of the last two and then I’m home free. |

1. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an FBI agent because I was, excuse me I mean AM a big X-Files fan and I wanted to go catch bad guys with a partner as hot as David Duchovny. 2. As an adult, I really want to open my own business. I’ve had a business plan in the works for a few years now but I have no start-up money or time. Right now, I have financial obligations every month so I have to maintain full time employment with a guaranteed paycheck. If I ever come into any amount of money, I plan to pursue my dream immediately. I don’t want to go into great detail because this business plan is my baby and I am protecting both the concept and my company name by keeping them inside my head for now. I need to win a jackpot in Vegas so I can quit my BS job and start it up already. |

Growing up, I wanted to be a forensic pathologist (I was apparently a morbid child.) I was actually recently going through a box of my stuff from when I was a kid and I found something from 4th grade that was about how I was going to be a forensic pathologist when I grew up. I gave up this dream once I realized that I would have to go to med school. I did recently attempt to be a medicolegal investigator (same thing as a forensic pathologist but doesn’t require med school). Unfortuntely there were other people more qualified. Now, my dream job would be to open up my own halfway house and post-halfway house housing unit. Basically I would buy out an old 2 wing motel (or something similar) and have one wing be a halfway house for sex offenders with treatment and help with jobs, housing, etc and the other wing would be an apartment complex for sex offenders who are unable to get different housing or would feel more comfortable being in a more supervised area. Honestly, if I won the lottery this is the first thing I would do (other than quitting my job and paying off mine, my husband’s and my mom’s debts). |

Oh yeah, prior to the forensic pathologist idea, I wanted to be a fire truck. Not a fireman, but the truck itself or a jeep. That’s what my mom gets for telling a creative child “you can be whatever you want to be.” |

@Cleopatra, How it works is you work with your advisor to come up with a project that fits under the grant that funds you. I’m doing a (mostly modeling) study on the effects of aerosols (particles in the atmosphere) on deep convective storms. Storm chasing I just do in my spare time, if there’s a moderate or high risk of severe weather within a reasonable drive |

when i was a kid, i wanted to be a doctor. if i won the lottery and had nothing else to worry about, i’d go to school for forensic anthropology. a slightly (but only slightly) more attainable dream job for me would be for me and my fiance to open a small cafe or pub. Which we are looking into making that a goal in the next 10 – 15 years. right now it’s just not a monetary risk either of us can take with kids involved in the mix! |

When I was little, I loved my pets so much and wanted to be vet. Then when I realized that veterinarians have to put animals down I decided I would work at an animal shelter. (I still love animals, but there if I worked at an animal shelter I guarantee I would literally have 500 cats and dogs.) In middle school I wanted to become a writer. That dream lasted for a few years, until I had an amazing high school English teacher and decided that I wanted to be just like her. The English teacher dream lasted a few years until my senior year when I realized how awesome it would be to become a band director…get PAID be a full time band nerd? Yes please! So I majored in music education and am now looking for my first full time band job. Of course it’s an incredibly competitive field so finding a job has proven to be quite difficult. I have two dream jobs right now. The first is a middle school band director. My middle school days were absolutely DREADFUL and I was definitely not expecting to enjoy teaching middle school kids as much as I do. But…I can connect with middle school kids pretty easily and I just seem to “get” them and their crazy ways. I love how goofy they are. I love that I’m still able to mold them because they aren’t quite as set in their ways as high school kids. And last year when I was subbing I successfully convinced a class of 7th graders that I was psychic. It was awesome. The second dream job is to work full time for the summer music camp where I’ve worked for the past three summers (also where I met my boyfriend). That place has literally changed my life and working full time in the office there would be AMAZING. Of course, there are only 3 full time workers year-round, including the camp director…but I can dream right? At this point I am also considering becoming an education professor at the college level. I had some pretty dreadful education professors (oh the irony…) and I think that would be something that I would really be good at. I would love helping future teachers learn about the education system and help them prepare for what is to come. Of course, I first need to start teaching full time myself, but who knows where I will end up?? For now I’ll sit back and enjoy the ride. |

When I was little I remember wanting to be a lawyer. Then in high school I was trying to decide between medicine (I liked psychiatry) or psychology. |

I honestly don’t remember what I wanted to be as a child. But now my dream job would be a sideline reporter for either NFL or SEC games in love college and pro football and if we ever move to Charlotte, I’m going to try my hardest to get a job a ESPNU. |

Anna and Budj – not only did The X-Files also determine my childhood dream job (criminal profiler for the FBI)…I’m even watching The X-Files right now! Hulu Plus did not seem worth it until I learned they have every.single.episode up. Now the goal is to become a counselor or therapist, like what Regina is planning to do but I’ll let her be the famous one. |

As a child? I was pretty sure I was going to be a doctor, and this “dream” has been through the washer so many times since high school. A big part of me also wanted to be a Bollywood singer-actress. Now? Guys, a huge part of me would still love to be a Bollywood singer-actress. (JK!) ((Kinda…)) More seriously, I still definitely want to be a doctor – regardless of all the back and forth that’s happened in my mind over the past few years. Some of you mentioned the FBI/CIA, and I definitely seriously considered those ideas (and sometimes still do…mainly because of how badass Emily Prentiss/Paget Brewster is on Criminal Minds…). But now I’m more focused on becoming a forensic psychiatrist and working with prisoner populations. I imagine this may come to involve a few different responsibilities, as traditional TV-esque forensic psychiatrists are not really the norm. Courts don’t want to pay for expensive testimonies, nor do they want to pay for death penalty cases, which is when f.psych. experts are generally called in. So, I could treat prisoner populations, testify sometimes, work with the California Dept. of Corrections in maintaing the human rights for prisoners, etc. Anywhoo, so there’s that, and there’s also my global health side, in which I want to focus on reforming (such a vague word) the health system in my home state in India. This will require a lot more planning, of course, but I’m really excited about making it happen, albeit the plans won’t start for at least 6+ years. I kind of have to apply and get into medical school first… These current “dreams” are probably more ridiculous than my childhood one – which was really so simple. Just “doctor.” The two descriptions of what I want now are like two completely different, complex lives. The probability that I’ll be able to do both is so small, especially if I want a rich family life, but I can’t help but be hopeful. |

When I was little I wanted to be a hamster farmer. Seriously. I wanted a farm with hamsters running all over the place and fences 1 foot tall to keep them in their areas. Now that I’m an adult my ideas haven’t changed all that much. My dream job (If I didn’t have to worry about money) would be to run an animal rescue. |

When I was a kid, I wanted to be on the Newbery committee, so I could help choose who won the Newbery award. (I realized about a year ago that I could actually make this happen by becoming a children’s librarian. I about had a heart attack.) Now, my dream job is to be a reference and instruction librarian at a college or university. Well, my dream dream job would be to be a technical director, but even in my dreams I wouldn’t be able to work that job and have a home life. It’s just not possible. So reference librarian is the dream for now. |
