Dear Wendy
Dear Wendy

Happy Fourth of July, Americans!

Fireworks

I’ll be taking the day off along with most of my fellow Americans to eat, drink, and celebrate our freedom and independence. Happy holiday to those of you who celebrate. And for those who don’t, as well as everyone else, here’s an open thread discussion question for you: when do you feel the most independent? For me, it’s usually when I’m traveling by myself, whether that’s by air, foot, car, bike, subway, or bus. There’s just something about commuting β€” getting from one point to another β€” on my own that always feeds my sense of independence and reminds me of my capabilities.

See you back here tomorrow morning for Friday Shortcuts!

Happy July 4th, my fellow ‘mericans! And to everyone else, happy Thursday! Btw, Thursdays were my favorite TV line up when I was a kid: Cosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers, and then Night Court – but I always fell asleep half-way through Cheers, long before Night Court. One time Rudy was wearing the SAME OUTFIT as me and I about died. That was random but you know I had to share.

I’m not a big fan of this holiday. Simply because I never have plans, I’m not a fan of fireworks, and I don’t have a lot of memories celebrating it with my family – no trips to the lake, no bonfires, no grilling, nada. Just me standing barefoot in the driveway throwing those white snappy things (the only thing I could get my mother to buy for me), or showing off how i can snap them in my fingers and it doesn’t even hurt ….

Today I’m off work and about to head to Bikram, then I plan to…. clean. Then later I have plans with a friend to take a little break from my vegan diet for some spicy tuna rolls – hurray for Sushi, the best 4th of July ever!

And just in case you were wondering about the rules of my vegan diet, here they are, as of today: (1) I am a serious, full-time vegan; but (2) on holidays I can eat fish and (3) in regions where cheese is special (e.g., Napa, anywhere in France, Wisconsin (hello cheese curds!)), then I’m allowed to have some if, you know, it’s necessary in order to fully appreciate the region and (4) no meat ever though.

Wait, you’re supposed to eat things like hot dogs and hamburgers on the 4th of July! Sushi in a bun is not the same thing. Not even if you put ketchup and mustard on it.

UPDATE: i canceled sushi and drive to a friend’s lake house in Michigan – gonna have a more traditional 4th of July! I brought my own buns and some veggies to grill. Will have to get my sushi fix on the next holiday, which will be … Bastille day! (But if there’s a sooner holiday, anywhere in the world, let me know.)

P.S. I love you too, Cats!

I guess I feel more independent living away from my family, in another country. I always valued independence highly and being here where I only really had myself to count on (or so I perceived), meant I had to make my own way or fail.

Ha, ok, I feel the most independent walking through the airport with heels on when I’m traveling for business.

    I feel like that’s weird.

Anyway, I am on my way to my uncles beautiful lake house in Wisconsin and jake just had his last day at his job he hated and he is coming to the lake house for the first time, and he is making BBQ tomorrow and we have tons of booze. I’m excited.

Can I just steal Wendy’s answer? I relate to that a lot—my sense of independence flourishes if I’m by myself traveling, whether it’s a long car trip, train, cab, plane (when I went to Hawaii by myself to visit a friend—11 hour plane ride alone! Ah!)

I guess being alone anywhere, getting shit done, makes me feel independent though? Even running errands. It’s like, hell yeah, Self, you remembered where you parked. You’re carrying all these bags! Awesome!

Every morning after I feed my cat, he gets back in bed and burrows under the covers. Usually all the way, but sometimes I’ll see a tail or a paw peeking out. Every single day he does this. And every time it happens I squee and think it’s the absolute most cutest thing ever in the whole wide world. (psst! he’s doing it right now!)

      That sounds so cute!

Yesterday, I was trying to get Fiona to drink some water because she hasn’t been drinking as much as normal lately. (Also, I’m a total helicopter pet-mom.) I stuck my finger in the water to see if she’d take some off my finger and instead she stuck her paw in the water. It pretty much turned into a game – I put my finger in the water, she puts her paw in – and then she finally drank some water. It was pretty cute to me.

My dog does that to my mom’s yorkie when he’s had too much of her. She’s adorable but kind of annoying, and I love that he bops her as opposed to getting aggressive with her. And the yorkie thinks it’s the best thing EVER. It’s like he’s the cool big kid.

When do you feel the most independent?

I’d say it’s when I’m directing the 12 Step meeting I’m in charge of. There’s a sea of people, some who may explode at any moment, who will follow my direction and some who even idealize me (thinking I must be perfect because I’m chairing the meeting). In reality, I’m still a work in progress myself and get so nervous every week. On the other hand, it is so empowering to promote the meeting, set it up and break it down every week, provide baked goods, and to have recovery and growth happen in the environment I have helped construct. I never, ever thought I’d be doing anything remotely like this, as I’ve always had intense social anxiety. But it feels great!

Happy 4th of July everyone! Even those who aren’t American, happy Thursday/4th to you πŸ™‚ I lounged around so far for the last 4 hours and now my husband and I are headed off to the zoo so I can see the new baby giraffe, new baby penguins, and new female lion and he can get some picture-taking done. Later tonight we’ll be going to another side of town (ok, technically it’s a different city, there it is like a city within a city) to watch Fireworks. I love fireworks.

The thing that makes me feel independent is in decision making. Like at work when someone defers to me to make a decision, it just makes me feel all warm and gooey inside.

I’m having fun messing with Facebook today. I watched dust motes in Brazil this morning and tonight I have a BBQ/picnic on Liberty Island. All without leaving my house.

In Anchorage, I’m not planning anything. We’ve got a neighbor that lets off enough fireworks to rival both city fireworks displays. I go back to work tomorrow. I could have taken the day off, but a bunch of management/directors are doing that and it’s best if someone who knows something is actually in the office. Plus I’m training a new receptionist (the last one retired last week – I trained her too) and should be on-hand in case she needs anything.
It’s raining today, which is great because we were under a fire ban. It’s been lifted, but I can’t remember if fireworks are allowed. Something makes me think we aren’t.
I’m also looking for pieces for a Carmen Sandiego costume.

Our anniversary was the 3rd, and he said he thought about doing it during the fireworks that night, but then those were a dud because it was cloudy, so he thought it would be funny to just do it first thing in the morning. No, we had talked about it, so I figured he would do it either on our anniversary, or later in the summer when we’re planning a weekend trip up north. I had wondered whether he would try it during the fireworks, though a big public gesture isn’t really his style.
