Occupy Sandy Donation Drive a Success!!

I just got back from buying supplies for Hurricane Sandy victims with your donations. DW readers donated a total of $875, as well as purchased almost $900 worth of supplies through the Occupy Sandy Amazon wish list (I added my commission from those Amazon sales to our collection). Drew and Jackson helped, as well as our friend and neighbor, Mary, who drove us in her SUV which was, thankfully, large enough to hold everything we bought. We got so much stuff! Four overflowing cartloads of supplies, including food, feminine hygiene products, wool socks, and baby supplies. We got so many diapers, we racked up $25 in store credit, which we used to buy more stuff.

After shopping, Drew took Jackson home, and Mary and I drove to the Occupy Sandy donation hub and dropped everything off. We took the food to the kitchen where volunteers cook hot meals for people who still have no power or any way to get food on their own. And we loaded everything else into a truck that is on its way right now to people who need the supplies. How cool is that?

I feel really good about what we did together and you should too. Almost fifty of you donated cash, and countless others purchased supplies through Amazon to send to Occupy Sandy. There were a lot of $5 donations and I know for some of you, that was all you could give and for at least one person, that meant skipping lunch the day she donated. To all of you: thank you! All those donations added up and made a big difference. We did good.

That’s so awesome!!!! I think so many of us were saying “Wow, that really sucks and I want to help but how? I’m really poor and barely making ends meet myself.” You’ve done something extraordinary by providing an outlet for those who don’t have much themselves to still be able to give whatever they can and help those who are even worse off. Thanks for the opportunity.

I forgot to mention in the post: for any single NYers who want to meet other singles — especially civic-minded, socially-conscious ones — the Occupy Sandy volunteer hub was TEEMING with young, hot people, many of whom, I’m sure, are single.

Confession: I did not donate to Occupy Sandy, and I feel like a giant shit. One of those long ones, you know what I’m talking about? I hereby promise to donate to the next Do Good, Damnit drive that Wendy organizes. I’m really impressed by you guys!

@Wendy, how ’bout we do this: I treat you to the movies every time you do good by organizing drives on DW. That’ll be my contribution to the good cause.

@MG, how about you come over for wine and cheese and I give you your DW mug and we call it even?

Yay Wendy! Thank you for putting this thing together. Not to mix posts, but the next time you feel iffy about your household financial contributions, maybe tell yourself that because of you, people affected by Hurricane Sandy got over 1600$ worth of stuff they really needed. I would have had good intentions, but I suspect I wouldn’t have donated anything if I weren’t on this site.
