Reader Recs: Check Out Sms841’s Picks

shoppingDear Wendy readers are some of the most intelligent, stylish, super cool people around (it’s a proven fact), so, when a commenter suggested I create a regular feature for them to recommend some of their favorite products, it was a no-brainer and Reader Recs was born. Today’s recommendations come from reader, Sms841. Sms841 lives in Philadelphia with her adorable dog. Newly single, she enjoys exploring the city, finding out about new events through Meetup.com, and wasting way too much time lurking on DW when she’s supposed to be working. Check out her recommendations below!

22347311. Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is a savior for when I wake up too late to wash my hair or just need to freshen up before going out at night. I especially like this one because I have really light hair and it’s the one brand I’ve found that doesn’t look like I have baby powder in my hair.

2210362-4202. Ozeri Pro Electric Wine Bottle Opener with Wine Pourer, Stopper, Foil Cutter and Elegant Recharging Stand

An electric wine opener is perfect when having a party and you need to open several bottles quickly or when you’re a klutz like I am and can’t open a bottle with a standard corkscrew. It works on real and fake corks, and you’ll never get a cork stuck in the bottle again!

3003. St. Ives Exfoliating Pads

These have quickly become my favorite beauty product. I have very sensitive skin that tends to flake if I don’t exfoliate. These pads contain AHAs which are supposed to be less harsh than a physical exfoliant like St. Ives apricot scrub, which is more widely available. I’ve seen a noticeable difference in the clarity of my skin, and it doesn’t flake anymore even in the harsh winter!!!

handy-massager_l4. Handy Massager from the Body Shop

I got this massager and this massage bar for Christmas. The massage bar is very lemony and melts when rubbed on the skin. Only a little is needed, so I’m sure it will last for a while. The massager is awesome too because I have back problems and like to get a firm massage. This tool made back rubs turn into mini-spa moments!

$_355. Simply Vera Vera Wang Opaque Control-Top Tights

I used to get all of my tights at places like CVS until I tried these. I’ve had several pairs for at least two years, and I haven’t had a single pair rip. They’re also a lot softer than the cheap brands, and you can get them at about the same price at Kohl’s, especially because they go on sale so often.

Thanks, Sms841!

I got an electric wine opener for christmas one year but I’m not sure if it’s this one or a Metrokane one. It’s good for lazy days but it definitely opens bottles much slower than I do with a regular bottle opener. Then again, it might just be because I’ve had a lot of practice opening wine bottles.

I’ve always thought this too! My inlaws have one of those rabbit opener things and swear by it. But from my bar tending days, I feel like I can uncork a bottle in like 30 seconds where the machine thing takes 3 times as long.

We registered for a rabbit, and I’ve used it 1 time. In 2.5 years. And I drink wine several nights a week! It just seems confusing to me.

True story: mine did. Her feelings were hurt when she found it in my room a year later, never opened.

Yeah, I am not one of those people that can just open a wine bottle. I think I have issues. I have had broken corks, opener permanently stuck in a cork until someone else could help me, I’ve also broken a cheap dollar store opener inside a cork… I cannot be trusted with simple things like opening a wine bottle, which is why these electric openers are perfect for me. Someone with an average level of coordination may not need one, but I can’t live without it!

I also exclusively wear the simply vera tights! Good rec! Mine have just now started piling at the ankle (where a lot of my ankle booties hit) after… 3 or 4 years? That’s a long life for a pair of tights.

Wow, how do you not rip tights in that amount of time? I rip tights every single time I wear them, including the Simply Vera brand.

I used to buy hifalutin pantyhose (which I called “hosies” for YEARS even as a lawyer which made me feel like a 5 year old). Then a coworker came into my office in a bind and wanted to borrow my pantyhose (I basically keep all my work clothes/pantyhose/shoes at work) so I let her look through my closet and drawers and she took my expensive pantyhose and she was like “thanks I’ll buy you another pair sometime” and I was like “actually no need to, just give me those back” and she was like “really?” and I was like “yea well they were expensive you know” and she’s like “you mean people don’t just buy the $3 pantyhose at the Jewel”? And then I was like “you mean people actually buy the $3 pantyhose at the Jewel?” And she was like “of course, they’re just fine!” and so from that day on I started just buying the cheapo pantyhose but then I went through a phase where I hated wearing pantyhose so I stopped except now I’m in a “yes pantyhose” phase so maybe I’ll tries these….. That was a really long run-on way of saying thanks, SMS.

I hate pantyhose. It’s not really required in these redneck parts of the woods.

I haven’t worn pantyhose in years… used to be required where I work but they slowly stopped enforcing, & not a moment too soon! I thought nobody wore them anymore!

I wear them in the winter to keep my legs warm if I’m wearing a skirt or dress, but not during the summer — I just bare-leg it. Esp. in the DC heat and humidity, I rarely even wear slacks to work in the summer, just skirts and dresses to keep cool.

Here’s why I like pantyhose: more warmth in the winter (and I usually wear skirt suits so I need tights or hose in the winter); and they just look nicer than bare legs unless I’m, for example, just home from Rio and have a nice tan; and my heals last longer

Here’s why I don’t like pantyhose: they make walking in heals harder (b/c my feet can’t grip the shoes and slide around – may be a function of having heals slightly too big); and also they make my shoes stink faster; too hot in the summer for hosies.

But if I’m in court or have a client meeting I DEFINITELY wear hose over showing up with bare legs, the nerve.

I think of “pantyhose” as the beige/nude ones that are still pretty see through and “tights” as the thicker ones that are good for winter. I prefer to wear skirts and dresses to work since I’m tall and I think dress pants look strange on me so tights are a must in my winter wardrobe. I go bare legged in spring and summer. Out of all the tights I’ve tried, I actually think these are really comfortable too. They don’t pinch and they last forever. Sometimes I come home from work and don’t even bother to change right away because they are really great. If I were wearing dress pants, they’d be off before I could even close my front door!

I always tear my pantyhose, then get last and don’t buy new ones, then I never wear skirts except in the summer. So I i think I’ll try those out, thanks!
