Reader Recs: Lianne’s Loves

unnamed-2New feature alert! Dear Wendy readers are some of the most intelligent, stylish, super cool people around (it’s a proven fact), so when a commenter suggested I create a regular feature for them to recommend some of their favorite products, it was a no-brainer. Today’s reader recs come from Lianne Heywood, who is a marketing communications manager in Boston. (That’s she on the right!) She lives just outside the city with her boyfriend Andrew. When she’s not shopping online, she enjoys cooking up new recipes, watching lots of “Downton Abbey,” and drinking Moscow Mules. Keep reading for her current favorites.

1_238351_FS1. TOMS Women’s Desert Wedges Suede

If, like me, you want the height of a heel without the torture of a stiletto, get a pair of these booties. I wear them walking in the city or standing on a crowded subway, with jeans or a cute dress. They are equal parts comfy and stylish. I liked the first pair I bought so well, I bought another!

41oWFMZYLfL._SY300_2. Anker Astro Mini 3000mAh Ultra-Compact Portable Charger

Having been stranded with a drained iPhone battery one too many times, I finally bought myself a portable charger. I like this one because it’s about the size of a tube of lipstick and charges pretty quickly. Bonus tip: This one doesn’t come with a cord, but you can use your own or buy a shorter one like this one.

old-dutch-international-os428-16-oz-solid-copper-moscow-mule-mug-set-of-4-3. Old Dutch Solid Copper Moscow Mule Mug

Who knew that the way to feel the refreshing kiss of summer is through vodka, limes, and ginger beer? The Russians, apparently. Enjoy your Moscow Mule in one of these solid copper mugs, which will keep your drink ice cold. Although these are so good you’ll probably finish well before the ice melts anyway. [On NYE, before we all went out to see Willie Nelson, my friend made us Moscow Mules and OMG, yes. I need to do a Drinking with Wendy tutorial on how to make them because they are the best. — Wendy]

Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner4. Organix Luxurious Moroccan Argan Creme Shampoo (& Conditioner)

I have super thick, wavy/curly hair and have never been able to simply wash and go. I recently decided to try this extra moisturizing Moroccan Argan creme shampoo/conditioner, and it’s changed my life. It not only smells wonderful, but it’s giving me great bouncy curls without needing to use another product or a blow dryer. [I also have thick, wavy hair, and I love the Moroccan Oil styling products, so now I can’t wait to try the shampoo and conditioner. — Wendy]

10455870-1322146577-3361725. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube – Original

When I bought the Urban Decay Naked palette (which is amazing), I received this primer as a bonus item. Holy eye makeup game-changer. If your eye shadow is clumped into the lines of your lids by lunchtime, here is your solution. I will never wear eye shadow without this again. Ever.

I’ve been on a mule kick and thinking of getting my own copper mugs, actually! There’s a bar down the street that makes Kentucky mules with ginger beer, orange bitters, bourbon, and a lime. DEELISH. I can’t get enough of them. And! When you order one, you have to fork over your ID or a card because I guess everyone tries to steal the mugs. That’s how awesome they are.

Those mugs have gotten so popular recently! Maybe I need to join the In Crowd and get them.

I’ve tried so hard to get into wedges, and I just can’t. Its like hats. I keep buying hats but never wear them because I just can’t pull it off.

    Thanks Lianne!

Oooh, I’m curious why you don’t like wedges. Is it the look, or the feel, or is it just that you have too many other shoes that you like more? I love wedges, especially wedge sandals in the summer…they’re comfy, walkable on the grass, and they come in so many summery styles!

They feel weird on my feet and when I walk, probably because I’m used to heels. But even the look – I love them on other people, but I put them on me and I feel like I just look weird. Plus you know when you stand in front of the mirror sideways and you see the heel (on a real heel)? I like that look, which you obviously don’t get from wedges.

That makes sense! I get that way with booties. I can’t wear ankle boots (which is why I probably won’t buy the ones linked here, but now that I know Toms makes wedges…I’ll see if they have other styles). I LOVE them on other people, but I always think they make my legs look stumpy, no matter what else I’m wearing.

I have something like those, and I love them! They’re not fancy — I just bought the Kushy Foot ones at the drug store — but they get the job done and they fold up so small I can even fit them, with my wallet and phone, into the little wristlet that I like to use as a purse when I go out.

See though, shoes like that offer no support and sometimes I’ll walk a mile plus to get somewhere. And for some reason, I can easily do that, when needed, in wedges. But I love the concept if I didn’t walk so damn much.

I have a pair of the TOMS wedges I bought on deep discount ($40) in taupe and I absolutely love them. They look so good with skinny jeans and are the most comfortable pair of shoes I own.

I want some of those glasses but am more a fan of the kentucky mule…aka made with bourbon ha. So good. Just thinking about it makes me want summer, although I had a Moscow Mule like a week ago. A bar near me had so many people stealing the copper mugs they won’t return your credit card until you give the mug back, so even if you want to close out your tab but aren’t finished with the drink they hold your card!!! Idk if I would ever spend $70 but maybe some cheaper ones for like 20-40.

TOMS wedges are the best – they are sooooo comfy. I have a pair of the original peep toe, but I was debating getting the ankle boots. I didn’t think I liked them until I bought a pair on clearance at Target and now I can’t quit wearing them!

I have the gray wedges and manage to rock them in just about anything – skirts are my favorite, though. They literally fell to pieces when I was in Tokyo, and I was so so sad. I bought another pair almost immediately after I got home.

I love ginger beer! I had Crabbie’s at a beer festival a few years ago and have bought it regularly since then. I need to try a Moscow Mule. Have you ever had a Dark and Stormy? It’s rum and ginger wine. I prefer ginger beer to ginger wine because the wine is really strong and I’m silly after, like, half a glass. Ginger anything is good though.

I’ll have to try that! I don’t know if it’s a regional thing – where are you? I’m outside of Philly and I’ve gotten ginger wine here and in DC (I visit a friend a lot). I’ve only ever had Stone’s and it’s around 13%. I think the problem isn’t necessarily the alcohol content but the fact that I drink them like juice. Crabbie’s ginger beer is much lighter and perfect for a stomach ache. 🙂

I am from DC originally but live about two hours from there now. So crazy I love all things ginger and have never heard of ginger wine. I will have to investigate. Also sort of love that it has such a high alch. content. I love Dark n Stormys but ginger beer is actually incredibly caloric and I drink so many I sometimes feel bad ha. Something with more alcohol would be better because I could drink less and still get a little buzzz going.

Dark and Stormies (stormy’s?) rock my world! I too love Ginger Beer. My dad gets some from a specialty shop up by them in the Bronx and you take one whiff of it and you start coughing. It’s awesome. Crabbie’s is usually in my fridge too.

I’d love to try a Moscow Mule, but I can’t drink Vodka. Everyone has those liquors that do certain things to them. Tequila I can drink like a fish and not even have a hangover the next morning, rum makes me happy and huggy, bourbon and whiskey I love, but they give me terribly vivid nightmares. And then there’s vodka. Vodka removes any and all filter I have and makes me downright nasty. I get angry and mean, and then I suffer for it the next day in the form of a hangover and regret.

I love Dark and Stormys! But I’m with muchacha – I’ve only ever had them with ginger beer. Also, when I was in St Croix, one bar made it with root beer and ginger infused rum, which was pretty amazing.

I have in black, too! They were my first pair. Then I needed an option to wear with my brown/navy tones.

I have all three Naked palettes :-/ I am super susceptible to advertising and basically wasted my money on all the eyeshadow that’s only slightly different. (I bought my Passat because of the little kid as Darth Vader ad. It was between that and a Hyundai Sonata and that ad pushed me over towards the Passat). Each time though, they come with that amazing primer, so I haven’t had to buy any in ages! It’s a must. It’s better than the NARS primer.

I’ve only ever tried the UD primer. Shockingly, I didn’t realize how important it was before. It seriously changed my life…sad as that may be.

I want another palette. I chose Naked over Naked 2, but want to check out Naked 3…Looks like I need to head to Sephora soon.

I went to Ann Taylor Loft last night, for I think the first time. Great stuff, cheap prices. Especially their pants.

Also, this is hard to write, but J Crew is…sucky lately. Like really sucky. Their stuff is looking cheap as shit and more expensive then ever.

Yeah, I always wait until the sale I want is happening. They do 50% off of tops regularly. If you start getting the e-mails you’ll notice patterns in the sales.

Ahhhh that’s so sad to hear. I’m on a spending freeze so I’m not even looking. I’ve always like J Crew Factory better than the regs store myself.

I’m on a clothing spending freeze too…I cracked last night and went crazy. It was bound to happen. I’m proud I made it this long. So…would you return all the pants and rebuy them or is that like the lamest thing ever? Do they even allow that?

I would, if you have time, and if you were on a spending freeze for a reason 🙂 You are totally justified in doing that.

Ask if they do price adjustments. When I worked at Express we did price adjustments within 2 weeks of the purchase. Not sure if they still do them or not.

yeah loft is INSANE with their vanity sizing and the completely unregulated way they size clothes. I can fit into a 0-4 there, literally have pants in every size range in between, and a blazer in a size 2, and I have 34 DD boobs so no. It is really whack.

I got my bonus payment today and totally want to spend most of it on clothes, shoes, and home decor. But I am exerting all of my energy and focus on willpower since I am also saving up to buy a house and pay for a wedding (hopefully by end of this year!).

PSA: Buy a scarf, a lipstick, a throw, and then bank the rest. That is how you put 20% down on a house and pay for a wedding with no debt.

Lianne – I too have curly thick hair so I’m curious about the shampoo you mentioned. How long before you noticed a difference? Also, has anyone ever tried Wen? I want to but I’m scared.

Hi mcj – I’ve used Wen and wasn’t overly impressed with it. It’s on the pricey side and has been a bitch to cancel.

With the argan creme shampoo and conditioner, I noticed an immediate difference in the ability to wash and go. My curls aren’t always perfect, and some days are frizzier than others, but overall I am very pleased with it. My favorite part is how silky my hair feels when I am rinsing it out. I did just last night buy the curl creme of the same brand, but haven’t tried it yet.

The Organix Moroccan Oil treatment (I think it’s deep penetrating oil) is great too, and so is the body lotion (bottle looks just like the shampoo). They smell wonderful. I would use the shampoo and conditioner but I need products for color-treated hair.
