September Book Club Selection: One Last Thing Before I Go

September’s book club selection, Jonathan Tropper’s brand new novel, One Last Think Before I Go, is available today. We read another of Tropper’s novels, This is Where I Leave You, earlier this year and it was universally loved it. Here’s the description for his new book, published today:

You don’t have to look very hard at Drew Silver to see that mistakes have been made. His fleeting fame as the drummer for a one-hit wonder rock band is nearly a decade behind him. He lives in the Versailles, an apartment building filled almost exclusively with divorced men like him, and makes a living playing in wedding bands. His ex-wife, Denise, is about to marry a guy Silver can’t quite bring himself to hate. And his Princeton-bound teenage daughter Casey has just confided in him that she’s pregnant—because Silver is the one she cares least about letting down.

So when he learns that his heart requires emergency, lifesaving surgery, Silver makes the radical decision to refuse the operation, choosing instead to use what little time he has left to repair his relationship with Casey, become a better man, and live in the moment, even if that moment isn’t destined to last very long. As his exasperated family looks on, Silver grapples with the ultimate question of whether or not his own life is worth saving.

With the wedding looming and both Silver and Casey in crisis, this broken family struggles to come together, only to risk damaging each other even more. One Last Thing Before I Go is Jonathan Tropper at his funny, insightful, heartbreaking best.

Next week we’ll discuss the August book club selection, Wild.

Is it necessary to have read “This Is Where I Leave You” before this one? I’m always reading something else during the book clubs, and I’d like to jump into it soon. Right now I’m about halfway through the LOTR series, but I could maybe juggle another book with it unless there’s a prerequisite read.

  2. AHH so many good books so little time! When the book club started I was like pshh book a month? No problem! Now that I started my new soul sucking job I have barely gotten to read anything that’s not work! I am going to catch up at some point!

  3. Loved the other book of his we read! Going to buy this one right now!

This book was not what I expected from the cover. I assumed this book was going to be about a man that has a bucket list if things to do before he died. But instead, it was about a man with real feelings and the characters seemed completely relatable even though the situations seemed far fetched. In the end, I really enjoyed the book and loved how it ended. I’m content with where things ended and appreciated the fact that things didn’t have to be sugar coated, shit gets tough and we have to live with our actions, good or bad.

    Good read. Thank you 🙂

I don’t know but I’m really sad because this was the first time I actually read the book in the correct month and not like 3 months later. Sad face.

  6. I know…just realized last night this book wasn’t discussed…then thought I probably missed it, but no. Sad. I love book clubs! I couldn’t read the first few months’ books because I was finishing the Game of Thrones series – which took me 9 months for all 5 books! Hopefully it starts up again soon. I also just finished Gone Girl – really good!
