Update: I do hope you all read this. We finally found a very good lawyer. I did not want to go that route but it proved necessary. After many hours with him he taught us a very valuable lesson.

Uninsured motorist covers obviously someone who might hit you who is not insured. This is obviously very important to have but I found out most people, myself included has only 30K coverage. Apparently this coverage also covers YOU even if the other motorist in insured in case they have low coverage. So if they are insured but perhaps an older car so lower amounts this amount on YOUR insurance can protect YOU. Your insurance can cover the difference. The attorney explained this in detail and indicated it is a often overlooked coverage and is very cheap. For about $5 more a month we have upped our coverage to 100K from 30K.

I wanted to share this info because I never knew but it can make a huge difference if anything ever happens.

I also learned many insurance companies offer coverage for about $2-$4 a month to cover your pet if it happens to be in your car during an accident. This an cover vet bills.

Please look into your policies carefully and see what you can add or update. I have also learned (well before this) that if you haven’t looked at your insurance in a while you may qualify for discounts due to age, years driving, zip codes, etc. Call your agent and find out how to get the most out of what you pay. For very little more a month I have added a lot to my policy. It doesn’t seem important, until it is.

Good to know! Hope you’re healing and feeling a little better. My first car was hit by an uninsured driver and since my car was old, I didn’t have full coverage. Learned my lesson…too many SR and zero insurance drivers out there.

Thanks for the info, Janelle! I just checked my uninsured motorist and it is at $100k, so that’s good.

Thanks guys for the feel better wishes. Sadly I am not that much better. Going to a pain management Dr. on Monday. My back feels like someone took a baseball bat to it and I am having headaches daily, which I never really get at all. Hoping it subsides though as I cannot imagine my back hurting like this for much longer. It is misery.

That sucks I’m sorry. If you’re open to it acupuncture can help a lot with pain management and healing (though I would recommend it as a supplement to traditional medicine not a substitute!).

So sorry you’re not doing better yet. I was rear ended in Jan. It was a teen girl who hit me. She even pushed me into the car in front of me. Totalled my car – took over a month to work through all the insurance crap to replace it.

More than the car though, I was worried about my back. I had back surgery (lower back) a couple of years ago and am very cautious about doing anything that might put me back in the kind of pain I was in pre-op. Sure enough, that accident caused a big setback. There were the typical whiplash symptoms of a headache and neck & shoulder stiffness, but what a lot of people don’t think about is how much it jars the lower back too. I actually started losing feeling in one of my feet.

I ended up doing about 6 weeks of physical therapy which helped a ton. It at least got me back to where I was before the accident (although I think my back is still a little more touchy since then). Hopefully you’ll be able to find a treatment plan that will help you get feeling good again.

Also, it was just this week that I realized I’m no longer checking the rearview mirror with a sense of panic every time I stop & there’s a car coming up behind me. There’s still a little extra anxiety, but that’s getting better too. Healing – physically and psychologically – can take quite a bit of time.
