You have to lie. It sucks but it’s the only way to go without screwing yourself.
I love that dress btw. Suit jacket would depend on the office/industry. Maybe try a few with it. Wrap dresses can be hard to pair with a jacket which is why I usually stick with sheath dresses for interviews.January 11, 2017 at 12:39 pm #668474
Sheath dresses are nice but I’m still holding onto some Christmas pudding in my tummy region so I’d feel more comfortable with that hidden.

@nookie yeah, I initially met with them in September but then they unfortunately got hit with a company-wide hiring freeze (it’s a huge company, something like 10,000 employees). The job was a 1-year contract as a maternity leave replacement (not sure where you are but mat leave in Canada is 12 months). It was supposed to start in December, but they didn’t get permission from head office HR to hire a replacement.
I’ve been in touch with the manager frequently since September and I think he’s pretty frustrated with all this red tape. He’s still hopeful that he’ll get the green light to bring me on, but if this other company makes me an offer first I’ll have to take it.January 11, 2017 at 12:48 pm #668476

Nookie, if you are concerned about leaving them in a lurch could you negotiate a longer notice period? Say, 3 weeks instead of the standard 2? If you alert your company that you’re looking to leave, they may decide to replace you on a schedule that works for *them* and could leave you without a job if this new company falls through. I know how it feels to think of a company like family, but unless you’re prepared for them to let you go immediately or before you have a new job, definitely don’t tell them.January 11, 2017 at 3:39 pm #668508
Eh, truth? If your company can’t handle your two week notice departure — it is a terribly run company. No, seriously. Every business should have be able to replace any employee or at the very least have the other employees cover for any position. If your place of employment fails to do that — that is on them. So I came in this morning and just told my boss that I either need to work from home tomorrow afternoon or take a half day as I have too much to get done before we leave on Saturday morning. He said just work from home so I’m in the clear! And there’s a little less lying this time, which makes me feel better.
Most of the positions I’ve had here in the UK have a one month notice period, this one included. So I know they can replace me in that amount of time. But a small firm like this, and especially as my role has grown to include a lot I wasn’t originally hired for, it is tough on them when someone leaves. We had someone go and we didn’t replace them for almost a year and my boss and I were losing our damned minds. Yes, that’s on the MD for not hiring someone but he’s not the one that suffers right?

What do you guys think will be covered in a second interview? I’m not really sure how I should prepare.
In the first interview — I think it was mostly to see if the directors liked me. And apparently they did, they told me I’m one of the top three candidates. We talked about my background, where I’ve worked, etc. We talked about the role. I asked a lot of questions about the company. I was surprised that they didn’t ask me any scenario related questions.
Then, the CEO sent me this long ass questionnaire that took me like 3 hours to fill out. It was all about my work experience and why I want to work for them and what do I think will make me a success in this role and to list specific training I had for a bunch of skills, and then list specific work experience I had for a bunch of skills, on and on. I found it really repetitive.
So I sent that in, next day CEO asked me to come back for a second interview. Do you think they’re just going to go over everything I wrote in the questionnaire? Should I print out the questionnaire and bring it with me so I can reference all my answers?

@kate I’m meeting with the same people I met last time. At the first interview, I met with the CEO (he does all recruiting and talent scouting apparently). We talked for like 45 minutes, and I had a list of questions I was asking him about the role and about the company. After a while he asked if I wanted to meet the Coordinator because she would be able to give me better answers. I said yes of course I’d like to meet her, so he went to get her and left me alone with her to chat. So then I talked with her for like 45 minutes and asked her all the same questions and I was actually able to ask HER a lot of scenario based questions.
Anyway, afterward I talked with the CEO again and he told me he usually doesn’t let people meet the Coordinator until a second interview. But that he liked me and I stood out.
So, the interview I have booked on Monday is with both the CEO and the Coordinator at the same time.
