I have little experience with “midwest food” so I really have no opinion. I did have delicious tacos in Chicago in Wicker Park, though, a few years back! I think a lot of people just stick to what they know, no matter where they live. Hell, give me some Cheesecake Factory vanilla bean cheesecake anytime. Also I live in the bay area and all I know is, you can’t be deprived of good Mexican food around here- so many good options!
Oh, also ETA- some of the best Mexican food I’ve had was in New Mexico. Green chilis!!

I did think it was interesting that there were a lot of brazillians and Puerto Ricans there. I think that the mainland American gigantic chain restaurant portions have a certain exotic appeal to people from other countries.

At least with Mexican food, it makes sense that they’d be better on the West coast/southwest since there are heavier Mexicans population there. I’d be willing to bet there are more Japanese people, as well. I do think that makes a difference, tbh. I think people here are using “good” and “authentic” interchangeably. Like, I like Chipotle. I think it tastes good. I don’t think Chipotle is good Mexican food. Like @Moneypenny, I think people like what they know — like how I didn’t like authentic Chinese food from China because it wasn’t what I was used to.

Right, I’m not deeply invested in knowing that I’m eating the same dish as some guy 6000 miles away.

I think it’s pretty sweeping to claim half the country is devoid of “authentic” food (or entire ethnicities). That’s definitely not true at all.

I also like Chipotle, I think it’s good, but I don’t think it’s authentic either.
The new big thing around here are Poke bowls. Places are popping up all over serving them. I’ve yet to try one yet- I wonder how they fare in the “good” vs. “authentic” matchup…

So, real talk, who’s going to Olive Garden tonight?

I don’t think there’s one near here, but I made the Spaghetti Bolognese from
Blue Apron and it hit the spot.

I used to WORK at the Olive Garden. In Fargo — no less. Hey, I was desperate for a filler job to earn more coin before going off to Europe for nine weeks.
    .
Their salad was AMAZING by 1995 Fargo standards. But it was like the restaurant version of The Office. The guy who trained us to open bottles of wine acted like we’d better have our shit together and present that cork just right as Madonna or John Cusack could pip in at any moment. Somehow… He seriously thought he had MADE it as Head Waiter and lorded over us so in a way I found it amusing… others not so much.

So he didn’t want to take you to dinner because he was busy playing xbox? He made up some bs about it being a bad area and then got all pissy when you said you were going anyway. He brooding and acting like a child throughout dinner. Sounds like the beginning of controlling behavior. Of wait you said he was a cop, yeah their whole job is controlling people. I think maybe the Olive Garden made you realize something about your man and maybe you shouldn’t be all that upset about your potential break up.

The people of Grand Forks were SO jealous of the Fargo Olive Garden. So jealous. Then they finally got their own. And…I don’t know what happened. I moved away right before it came. But I think that was the most anticipated Olive Garden ever.
