Sorry, no, someone without social common sense or the ability to “work in real time,” and whose schizophrenia keeps getting worse, to the point where she herself believes she may have delusions that the meds can’t control and/or hear voices, should not work with kids. Cool? We good here? The answer is nope.

You’re focused on the exact wording too much. People are saying that teaching isn’t less stressful than social work. And if you’ll read my post, I suggested that it’s different kinds of stress. You listed jobs you think are a bad fit, listed teaching as a good fit, and then asked opinions. So people gave their opinions on why teaching has similar difficulties. You seem to think that we’re trying to be mean, but we’re trying to answer your question and give suggestions. Instead of fixating on the one part of everyone’s posts, it would be more useful to actually read the advice you were given in regard to other career options, etc.

Basically I feel people just think I shouldn’t do teaching cause I have schizophrenia and theyre just saying its because its stressful because in reality teaching is not more stressful/much more stressful than social work or even physical therapy and I don’t get why people think its such a big deal because its preteens I have to work somewhere and schizophrenics are about 5 times more likely to be violent and that’s not actually that much let alone my specific case is not anywhere near as bad as most peoples if it gets bad I can switch to something else lie Ive been in school ive seen classrooms (above 6th grade) you just tell the kids to be quiet and threaten them with detention and they pretty much behave

like what happens in teaching if you make a mistake — kids get corrected in college or on the job training probably and nothing happens, maaybbee they make mistakes on their job but if you mess up in physical therapy people are definitely affected directly by you aka more stress plus if a teacher teaches wrong they can go back and fix it no problem the only issue is public speaking

You asked if teaching is an option for you. Several people have very kindly pointed out the ways in which teaching would be a very very BAD option for you. You are now choosing to overlook all of the very serious and substantive reasons that people here have given as to WHY teaching would be a terrible option for you, and are doubling down on a tangential question that you asked.

The answer is that you would be counseled, and then fired, for your actions. Schools don’t really care about what is going on in your brain; they care about how you are doing the job. Accordingly, any mental health issue that you have that affects how you perform every day in the hormonal stew that middle schools are, has the potential to get you fired. It’s not “discrimination” for an employer to expect you to be able to do the job.

And, speaking of stress, are you aware that you have a certain limited period of time in which to get your masters degree, if you start teaching with a bachelor’s? So unless you want to invest a crapload of time and money to get your masters before you have any real teaching experience, there’s that additional stress of needing to work on your degree.

Based on the fact that you DO NOT listen to advice, and seem to think that your mental health status affords you special protections, I certainly wouldn’t advise you to pursue teaching as a career. If you won’t be counseled by us, then it’s a slam dunk that you won’t listen to an employer.

And if you think the only thing that teaching requires is public speaking than you couldn’t be more wrong. You clearly have no clue what is involved in teaching.

But it is abundantly clear that you think you know what is what, and you have talked yourself into the idea that it’s a piece of cake, and very forgiving, and more. So have at it. Don’t listen, and do go ahead and waste your time and money. Have at it. Don’t say we didn’t try. But don’t expect us to itemize all the reasons your unrealistic rosy scenarios are bull, because you will only come up with a raft of new bullshit objections. Good luck to and to your parents.

Let me revise my answer based on this new information: “schizophrenics are about 5 times more likely to be violent.”

Uhhhh…. still a nope there on the working with kids. Time to move on from that.

But she’s *seen* classrooms, so she’s an expert on what’s involved! And, I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express, so I must be qualified to perform surgery. And I’ve been on a cruise ship – how hard can it be to drive them suckers? It’s gotta be easy, and besides, there are harbor pilots that’ll take the ship into port, so really there’s nothing to worry about, amiright?

Yeah, I’ve seen every episode of OITNB so I know prison would be all fun and games and pube-braiding. No sweat!
