Updates: “Good Enough for Him” Responds

It’s time again for “Dear Wendy Updates,” a feature where people I’ve given advice to in the past let us know whether they followed the advice and how they’re doing today. After the jump, we hear from “Good Enough for Him” whose boyfriend was struggling in school and with holding down a job. Feeling dejected, he told her that she should see other people. “I am so sick and confused over this.” She wrote. “I don’t know what to do or what to think. Please, please help me.” Keep reading to see how she’s doing now and whether she and the boyfriend and still together.

First of all I’d like to thank Rachel for answering my letter. I took what she said into consideration and gave him space. He ended up taking a semester off school and called me to talk about it, and I told him I could not be his crutch anymore and he could not call me whenever he had no one else to turn to.

A few weeks went by. I dropped his stuff off at his house. We both saw other people. He ended up getting not one, but two jobs, paid off his bills, and got re-enrolled in school and set up his classes for spring semester and a graduation plan.

Around Thanksgiving, we both met up and decided we wanted to give our relationship one last shot. We are currently going to couples counseling and a LOT has gotten worked out! I also got my first “big girl” job and got a 4.0 for my first semester of my masters program….and instead of being resentful, he was extremely supportive…he also sent flowers to my job!

Thanks again for everything! We are happier than ever and it’s awesome to see him standing on his own!

Wow, things worked out FAST for you guys. Congrats, and good luck!

If you’re someone I’ve given advice to in the past, I’d love to hear from you, too. Email me at wendy@dearwendy.com with a link to the original post, and let me know whether you followed the advice and how you’re doing now.

  1. Def congrats. It’s great you both seemed to have grown from the experience.

  2. I reread the original article and we were definitely harsh on the BF – fortunately it sounds like it turned out to be the best-case scenario rather than the worst 🙂

Something about the timeline doesn’t seem to flow. If Wendy does work in the future. Say the LW wrote in around middle of September. She would have already known that the bf was skipping the fall semester.

    I’m confused. But congrats anyhow.

Unless he was signed up and withdrew…

  6. He did drop out in the middle of the semester. I could have phrased that differently. Sorry!
