Weekend Open Thread

TGIF, amiright? I’m glad this week is over and, physically, I’m all back to normal and can move on. Thank you, by the way, for all your kind words on this post. I’m hoping I will have happier news to share in the next few months. In the meantime, I got to enjoy some belated birthday bubbly this week, so, you know: silver lining and all.

This is the last quiet weekend for a while. Next weekend I’m taking Jackson to Missouri to visit my parents, and the weekend after that we have Yom Kippur, a 3-year-old bday party in the ‘burbs, and a baby shower back in Brooklyn. And the weekend after that is Jackson’s birthday party (for which I need to send out invites and, like, plan something). This year we’ll just order a cake for the party. (Last year I was crazy and made a 3-layer — or maybe it was even 4 layers — cake for 35+ guests), but for his actual birthday this year, I’m thinking about making this (because, oh my God, YUM). And I don’t know what the weekend after that holds, but probably more birthday parties since it’s the season for that. And then it’s Halloween and I need to plan for that. Jackson says he wants to be Daniel Tiger which, if you have a child in your life between 2-4, you have surely heard of and, if you don’t, you probably haven’t. So I need to get the costume and shoes (cute little toddler red converse, I think) and makeup to paint his face (does anyone have any recommendations for face paint makeup?). And then we’re in November and it’s practically the holidays and I’ve got to start my gift guides and holiday shopping and meal-planning and travel-planning, oh my god, just pass the wine, please.

Anyway, TGIF!

P.S. I love that song posted above that someone in my Facebook feed linked to earlier this week. I wish I could find lots more just like it.

P.P.S. I’m doing a fall donation drive next week and will have fun stuff for donors to win each day. Stay tuned!

P.P.P.S Happy wedding weekend to call-me-hobo!

Aww my 3 year old looooves Daniel Tiger. I wish Halloween were a thing here. As it is she has to dress up for everday life (we just took big sister to a bday party and 3 y o is wearing her Snow White costume).

I´m glad you´re doing better Wendy!

And that peanut butter cup looks AMAAAAZING. I´m in full party planning mode for my eldests (in december). It is of course Frozen themed, so l´m thinking light blue and white marbled? Maybe.

How was the 2nd week of preschool? And the meeting with the teacher?

The teacher must have forgotten that she suggested a meeting about potty-training because it wasn’t mentioned this week. So that part is good. However, the transition wasn’t as seamless this week as Jackson cried both days that I dropped him off and he cried throughout class yesterday telling the teaching he missed me.

Aww don´t worry about it. Sometimes it´s like the kids “click” at the huge change. It happened to me with 3 y o after the winter vacation, for like 2 weeks it was a struggle getting her in the door at kindy!
I can´t wait to see pics of Jackson as Daniel Tiger!!!

Aww, that’s got to be so hard on a parent! (Pulling from my only source of reference), I know how much it breaks my heart to leave Moose when I go to work and hear him pawing at the door for me – can only imagine what it’s like to drop off a kid (a real person nonetheless!) who is crying for you. I hope it gets better for both of you!

LOVE Daniel Tiger. My girls are always singing the little songs. My favorite is “clean up pick up out away”. They’re unfortunately not as great as practicing the clean up as they are the song. My oldest is being a good little witch. We’re trying to make her look like Lucinda from Sofia the First. My little one is afraid of her costume so she may opt out of Halloween this year.

Jackson’s going to be so freaking cute! What a seriously great idea from a three year old. Good Lawwwd, you sound busy, Wendy. It all sounds so fun, though.

My son also wants to be Daniel tiger. I got some cute blue pajamas with buses on them (not trolleys, but hood enough) and a blue stuffed cat/tiger Thor him to carry. Tiger ears attached to a headband and some tiger face paint stripes and we are good to go!

If you’re looking for more like that song, the group is called Scott Bradlee and the Postmodern Jukebox.

I know. I just don’t like the other stuff I’ve listened to quite as well as this song.

I don’t know Daniel Tiger! I’m sure now I will notice him everywhere. Kind of like when Jk said her daughter liked Doc McStuffins – I had never heard of it – now I see her everywhere!

Have a good weekend, all! I have a fun little weekend planned. I’m loving life these days. I’m not sure why (ha, no boyfriend), but everything is just feeling good. I’ve been eating healthyish and drinking moderatelyish and working out and work’s good, friends are good, Moose is a love bug, weather is fantastic, and just lots to do and be thankful for I guess. If I ever get all whiny and woe is me, will someone remind me how far a little healthy eating and a good work out go? I swear when I’m treating my body well, my attitude does a 180. Life is fun!

Also this week I went to this event after work for women lawyers. It was about how to dress. I was kind of offended by the concept – here we all are, educated professional women and we are being lectured about style and clothes? I imagined the men all meeting for a similar lecture and laughed at that site. Yet there I was – mostly for the free booze. I sat in back with friends and rolled my eyes when the lady started pulled out clothes and modeling how to turn that little black dress from court appropriate to after work cocktail hour appropriate with a scarf and bangles. … Then I kinda got hooked and I ended up emailing the lady and guess what? We are meeting and I’m pretty sure I’m going to hire her to be a stylist and personal shopping – which I hate to do but recognize I need to do it! I’ve never hired a shopper – I’ll let you know how it goes!

A personal stylist/shopper sounds like something that’s very useful in the working world, especially for lawyers… I once went to an etiquette class for women in STEM fields and had a similar reaction. Although it was far less useful than it sounds like this class was.

I got a Doc McStuffins sticker book for Bassanio’s niece, partially because it was the only sticker book I could find at the grocery store that day, and I think she loved it. Although she just likes stickers, so I’m not sure how much is just because it’s a sticker book and how much because it’s Doc McStuffins…

I had heard about the Postmodern Jukebox, but hadn’t actually heard any of their music or seen their videos. However, after playing the link above, I went online and started their watching videos. And then couldn’t stop – for 3 hours.

I didn’t realize that was Postmodern Jukebox! I probably should recognized the similar room setup… Anyway, my favorites have been the Klezmer Talk Dirty and the Ducktales Theme. Actually, all the Saturday Morning Slow Jams, they’re awesome. And the rapping in Yiddish makes me want to send it to all the jewish grandparents in the world, even if the material isn’t exactly appropriate.

Hey you guys, it is complicated and different living with a man partner. Just letting you know, so you will test it out thoroughly before committing. We are doing fine.

It so is! My husband and I never argued as much as the first maybe 6 months of living together. And before that we were spending like 5/6 nights a week together. Patience!!!

so is it stuff like “i’m not used to sharing all my space with people all the time” thing? Or is it like a “oh, so THIS is what you’re really like” thing? Or a “dudes leave the toilet seat up thing and I’m trying to not let it annoy me” thing?

It’s just stupid stuff that never bothered us before. Just adjusting. I went from living by myself for 4 years to living with someone else. So it’s a big adjustment and we’re both learning to deal with how each other likes things done. Neither way is wrong, just different.

I had the same experience. The first 5 or 6 months living together there were so many arguments about stupid stuff, sometimes important things, but mostly regular roommate stuff. It definitely gets better.

Yeah, I don´t even remember what we argued about haha,
I remember the first week morning I was living there I thought I´d be sweet and wake up earlier than I had to to have breakfast together. That didn´t go down well (neither of us are morning people so we need some room to ourselves first thing haha)

I will be going to a Navy Ball in two weeks!!!! Which is exciting but was originally overwhelming because it’s TWO WEEKS to find a black tie appropriate outfit, hair, make up, etc. And I think I have it thanks to rentherunway.com!!! Shout out to DWer Kate for being my personal style guru. 🙂

Daniel Striped Tiger is awesome. My kid isn’t even born yet and I love to watch that show. Gives me happy nostalgia buzz regarding Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and when he’d take Trolley to the Land of Make Believe.
