Weekend Open Thread

At last night’s meetup, we discussed our numbers. Not numbers as in how many people we’ve slept with, but numbers as in, are you a 1 (a person who loves kids, all kids)? Or a 2 (a person who really only likes your own kids)? A 3 (you don’t like kids at all)? Or a 4 (you love other people’s kids but don’t want your own)? You can do this with cats and dogs, too. So, I am a more of a 2 with kids (although I like my friends’ kids and my kid’s friends), and a 1 with pets (I love all cats and dogs).

We also discussed the Saturn Return, which we need to talk about more, but I’m too tired to get into it after not getting much sleep last night, so that will have to wait. But if you know what Saturn Return is and want to discuss, please do.

Tonight my friend Matt, who moved to NYC this week from Chicago, is coming over for a welcome dinner. I’m making sesame chicken with fresh green beans and either rice or sweet potatoes. Tomorrow is Yom Kippur and Drew will be in temple all day which means I get to entertain Jackson on my own from sun up to sun down. Luckily, we already have a breakfast invite to our friends’ place and there has been talk of bloody marys. Then, on Sunday we have a three-year-old birthday party in the ‘burbs in the morning and a baby shower back in Brooklyn in the afternoon. And then on Monday night, I have a friend’s benefit performance to go to on the upper west side, followed by Jackson’s 3rd birthday on Thursday and his party on Saturday morning. The next day, Sunday, I’m going to sleep. All day. And probably drink some pumpkin ale.

What about you?

p.s. I don’t really think everything is shit. It was just a sign I saw in a store window and liked. Lots of things ARE shit. But not everything. Definitely not love.

I’m a 4 and Othello is mostly a 3 (although he adores our nieces, and since their arrivals, has mellowed to the point he doesn’t want to scream when he’s around them). I wouldn’t mind having a baby or a teen, but I’d have a real problem raising a 3-11 year old. I can handle them in batches, but I wouldn’t want to deal with a kid 24/7.

If you replace kid with pet, we’re both whole-heartily 1s.

Ooh, and my SIL just let us know she’s pregnant with kid #3. I’m hoping it’s a boy because I want a nephew to spoil, but either way I’m thrilled!

I’m a 2 on both, except I love my friends’ kids and my sister’s kids. 🙂
Drew is not alone in his observance! I will also be at temple most of the day. I made the mistake of buying a really yummy-looking pumpkin pie this week and if I’m not in temple tomorrow, it will cruelly taunt me from the kitchen counter. How’s that for motivation?
Good luck tomorrow to both of you. 🙂

I’m sort of a 3.5 for kids – I enjoy observing kids and hearing stories about them, but I don’t have an interest in having my own or interacting with other people’s kids. That’s kind of a weird combination.

I think I’m kind of a 1.5 on the kids thing… I don’t have kids but I looove my nephew (who is 2.25) and I generally like other kids, unless they’re obnoxious. So. And being a former camp counselor, I had a lot of fun working with 7-12 year olds, but my experience has, I admit, been limited!
    .
I was told about the Saturn Return thing about a year ago, after I turned 29… I really found that I related a lot to it, since I found myself in a bunch of emotional turmoil/changes and such not that long after, coinciding with the 29.5 timeline of Saturn Return. In a nutshell, I am finding that now I feel a bit more clear on the path I’m on, much moreso than I was a year ago, or even 6 months ago. So!
    .
My weekend is busy- today I had a birthday lunch with my sister, nephew, mom, and my mom’s old friend, whom I have not seen since I was 14. And tomorrow, I’m having a get-together with friends at a brewery. Sunday is my cousin’s wedding- it’s supposed to be 90+ degrees at the location of the wedding, which is also a good 2 hours away! At least it will be fun celebrating with them. Hopefully I won’t melt.

I’m a definite 1 for kids. I’ve always been a nut for kids, all of them. For pets I’m a 1.5…. In that before Moose I really never paid attention to others’ pets and didn’t really like them jumping up on me but then I for Moose whom I adore (making me more of a 2) but I find myself more “ga ga goo goo” over random pets I see walking down the street and lately I’ve been stopping to pet them all and talk to their owners about dog issues (more like a 1)…. So 1.5?

It’s 7:30 am and I’m up but my friends are aleeping (we are staying at a hotel in NYC the weekend). So I’m gonna go explore. … NYC baby!!!

You guys, I know I say Chicago rules a lot, and it does, but New York City is kind of objectively the best place in the world, amiright??!

Paris is good, too. But, yeah, New york, especially, in the Autumn, is pretty fucking fantastic.

This reminds me of Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks. 🙂 “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would buy you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.””

I would say I´m about 1.1 on both scores. I love probably 99% of kids, dogs, and cats. Of course there are some exceptions, but they are rare.

I’m about a 1.5 on kids. As a teacher, I absolutely adore kids and I know that I want some of my own. I often call my students “my kids” and people who don’t know me very well sometimes confuse that with me having my own kids. Yet there are times when I realize that I’m really glad I don’t have my own kids yet.

As for the weekend, I spent yesterday on the couch either sleeping or watching Netflix because a nasty cold and fever came over me like a ton of bricks. No fun. Fortunately after a day of a LOT of rest and a LOT of sleep I’m feeling much better today…and tonight is the Navy Ball with Navy Guy!! My fancy dress from Rent the Runway came in on Thursday and I have a hair appointment today as well. Excited!

If I figure out how to post a picture of me in the dress on here I will. But the dress itself is here: https://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/badgleymischka_dresses/corundumsapphiregown

I was super worried that it wouldn’t fit because of my chest but it fits like a glove!

That’s gorgeous, I love it! I need to find an excuse to wear a dress like that. I have a hard time finding things to fit over my chest too.

It feels like prom all over again, but more mature! I’ve never had a black tie event to go to so I’m pretty stoked, although it is definitely a process — and an EXPENSIVE one at that. Good thing NG bought the tickets, and is buying the drinks…

Hm, that’s an interesting idea, the different levels of liking or wanting kids/pets. I’d say I’m pretty much a 4 on kids, since all kids are pretty interesting to me and I think they’re funny, but I also prefer kids that I know, so maybe a little of 2? But mostly I just want to study kids and see how their language grows. My kids would hate me because I’d want to record them like all the time and analyze them, like they’d get used to me recording them every two weeks. That would be my version of a baby book… My dad was interviewed on the radio recently and as a little present to him I analyzed his dialect. I think he liked it, but I’m pretty sure it was more fun for me… At least with pets I fit more into these categories – I’m definitely a 2 on dogs and 3 on cats.
    .
And good on Drew and Jennylou! I pretty much decide that if I’m fasting, I don’t go to temple. We have our own tradition of breaking the fast and I’m really excited about it. It’s at a restaurant, because there’s no way I could make food today… Anyway, an easy fast to anyone else out there observing!

What’s your sesame chicken recipe? I was just thinking I wanted to make something to serve with green beans before they go away for the winter.

Today is the Lady M’s birthday, so we’ll be having friends in later. We had hoped the weather would permit a fire outside, but it is rainy and crappy. But we will do a fire inside (not as good, but still good). I asked her what kind of special food she wanted for her party, and all she would say was bruschetta (she had a busy week and couldnt focus on the weekend), so I am doing a bunch of different types of bruschetta and crostini, with different combos of tomato, garlic, onion, basil, feta, artichoke, avocado, smoked salmon, berries, cream cheese, other cheese, roast garlic aioli, and anything else I can find in the fridge. (Obvs, we will have other things, too.) Later when we are intoxicated enough, maybe Cards Against Humanity. I have implied that I could be goaded into dancing naked, but we shall see… Have a great weekend!

My Mom group had a bloody mary bar on Thursday. We couldn’t stop saying, “WHY haven’t we done this before??” It’s absolutely becoming a monthly tradition. We are cleaning & organizing and hopefully getting some gardening done since flurries are in the Wisconsin forecast!

I think I’m around a 1.75 for kids. Before I had my own, I was very attached to my nieces and nephews but I didn’t really care about stranger’s kids. Once I had my own and I couldn’t get over how ridiculously cute they were in different stages, I began to see it in other kids, too. But I still have to push myself to pay attention to them (random kids). I don’t have that problem with my own (including nieces and nephews and friend’s kids)

Animals- I’m probably more like a 2.5. I used to closer to a where I am with kids but since I had children I have a lot less tolerance for furrings, drooling, droppings, and clawing (I have to deal with enough of those already). But I’m probably a 1 with puppies, kittens, and babies. I mean who doesn’t like soft, sweet babies of all forms?

Hmm some kids and pets are agreeable and some are quite annoying, so I can’t really commit to a number. I have my own kids and like animals but can barely look after my home with kids so can’t do pets at this point. I guess I like kids better because though they might be just as germy as pets they are less touchy feely, so I can maintain more personal space.
Happened to make sesame chicken as well, with a skinless breast and some sauce I got at costco. Happily my children ate it even though they prefer chicken “with skin” ie rich and crispy. I’d like to try Wendy’s recipe next time though.

LOVE that blue font art in the illustration. I’m a big fan of font art in general but it’s hard to commit to a phrase…
