Weekend Open Thread

Happy Friday! How was your week? Mine was pretty good. Highlights: I had a sonogram yesterday and got lots of images of Baby Girl Condellberry, including one where she’s totally smiling and looks just like her big bother in profile. You know, if her big brother were a black-and-white x-ray image. She’s also been kicking a lot in the last week, which is such a cool sensation, and one I am trying to soak up as this will be my last pregnancy and my last time experiencing it. I also started a new book that I’m really enjoying so far. (It took me two weeks to choose a book because I was so anxious about picking something I wouldn’t like, so I’m relieved I seemed to have chosen well this time. It’s a memoir written by a woman who, it turns out, was born the day before I was, in Mexico, and about her tumultuous childhood after parents left her and her young siblings to flee to the United States). And this morning, at the coffee shop I was working at while Jackson was in school, Ethan Hawke totally sat at the table next to me, and, OMG, I’m such a fan that, even though I’ve gotten used to celeb sightings (eventually, if you live in NYC long enough, at some point you see everyone who is or ever was famous), I was totally freaking out (on the inside, I mean. On the outside, I was totally, like, “Whatever, no big deal, carry on.”)*. And now it’s just about time for me to go pick up Jackson and we’re going to head to a Friday matinee of Paddington, which will be his first ever full-feature movie theater experience. (We took him to a film fest a few weeks ago where he saw a collection of shorts, but none was longer than 15 minutes or so). He has requested lollipops and popcorn during the movie, which I think I can oblige.

Also, February ends tomorrow and then we’re in March and that means Spring is coming, spring is coming, SPRING IS COMING. And maybe I’m jumping the gun a little — after all, it will probably be a couple more months before temps hit 80 around here — but I’ve totally got my eyes on these. Ooh, and these! And, God, can I just say how happy I am that I will be big-pregnant in the spring and summer instead of the winter? These last two weeks since I started rapidly gaining weight — and I mean RAPIDLY; for 17 weeks, I gained one pound, and then all of a sudden, I blinked and I packed on 8 or 9 pounds — it’s been a challenge to pull on my boots or zip up my winter coat. (I figure I have about two more weeks that I will actually be able to zip it up at all, so spring really needs to hurry and get here because I am not going to buy a maternity coat that I’ll just wear for a few days). I’m ready for the ease of sandals and flowy dresses and all good things that warmer months bring, except boob sweat and smelly garbage. Oh, and air conditioner drippage on the sidewalk, gross.

Oh! By the way, I thought this forum thread posed an interesting topic for discussion. Have you ever had a really bad or awkward first kiss that led to a much better second kiss (or a great relationship)?

Ok, that’s all. Happy weekend, everyone!

* So, Ethan Hawke is totally one of my favorite celeb sightings. I also got a thrill out of seeing the Rolling Stones stroll out of a movie theater on the UWS years ago. And when we still lived in Hell’s Kitchen, not too far from the Ed Sullivan theater where Letterman is taped, Drew and I got to see Obama drive away in his motorcade after taping an interview with Dave (and he looked out the window as he drove past and waved at us!). And my least favorite celeb sighting is Kate Hudson, who is a total bitch and basically represents everything that is wrong with celebrity culture. What about you? Any favorite or least favorite celeb sightings?

PS Yesterday was Johnny Cash’s birthday (or, as Jackson calls him, just “Cash”). Hence, the song.

I have lived in NYC ~5 yrs and not seen too many celebrities. Then again, yesterday I was walking down the street and two coworkers (that I passed 10 mins apart) of mine had to repeatedly shout “hey” at me before I noticed them, so I guess maybe it’s because I am really self absorbed and don’t notice people? LOL.
    .
Mostly I’ve only seen like D-list celebrities or celebrities before they were famous. I saw John Oliver once a few years ago (he’s super bald in the back and wears suits 3 sizes too small!), before that I saw Amanda Setton (was in Gossip Girl & Mindy Project), and Brooke D’Orsay (in Royal Pains & Drop Dead Diva), and I was apparently I was on a plane to India once with Drew Barrymore (I didn’t see her, but lots of people were trying to sneak up to first class). I don’t freak out about celebrities sightings, but maybe that’s partly because I haven’t seen anyone super famous? Once my husband and I once saw Fareed Zakaria (from CNN) at the bagel shop with his kids and my husband wouldn’t stop loudly whispering “OMG its Fareed!” — so embarrassing 🙂 The only other celebrity I’ve seen in my life was Eddie Redmayne this summer in London while sitting a table away at a pizza place. This was before Oscar winning role was out and we just knew him as the one red-head kid from from Pillars of the Earth. My husband loudly whispered “Is that the guy from that one TV show about the middle ages church” and of course the poor guy turns around and gives us a half amused/half annoyed look and his friends kind of laugh at us. Guess he’s going to have to get a lot more used to being recognized now!

Now, see, I’ve been in NYC 7 1/2 years and I can’t even count how many celebrities I’ve seen. I’ll forget until someone mentions the name and then I’m like, “Oh yeah, I saw her on the Q train or whatever.” Actually, I’ve never seen a celeb on the train. Well, I MAY have seen gaby hoffman on the C train yesterday but it was crowded and I couldn’t get a clear enough look to be sure, so I won’t count that. I’m an observer though and am constantly scanning my environment, noticing lots of things maybe other people don’t always pay attention to (and missing a lot that other people notice, I’m sure). I also worked at a coffee shop in soho briefly that was frequented by lots of stars, so I had a fair share of sightings there. The best celeb customers were mary louise parker and Jeremy sisto because they were unassuming and they tipped well.

These are not really sightings because I worked with them, but the absolute worst was Martha Stewart. She is just awful and terrifying. Kate Gosselin was also pretty nuts. (I know she’s not really famous now, but this was right after her marriage imploded.) Best celebrities to work with were Clay Aiken, Coach K (which pains me to admit as I am a diehard UNC fan, but it’s the truth), and Michelle Obama.

Dreadful is exactly the right word! A good friend of mine served her a glass of wine at a dinner once, which she promptly knocked over and spilled ALL over his pants. Instead of apologizing, she turned to him and said “Oh GOOD, it got on you and not my purse!”

She also made a habit of kicking the manager out of his office so she could make phone calls in private during dinner because she didn’t want to be “stared at” by the plebes in the phone booth.

I go to Clay Aiken’s old church, with Clay’s mom Faye, and have actually had his son Parker in children’s church before. He seems very nice and even came to Homecoming and sang for us a couple of years ago. Very down-to-earth and genuine.

I got to meet Ben Affleck and David Fincher while they were in Missouri filming Gone Girl and I was writing a story for our magazine. David Fincher is an absolute doll and total gentleman. He let us sit behind him on the set and watch the monitors and ask questions between takes and he made sure some assistants brought us chairs.

I only got to meet Ben long enough to shake his hand, but he was lovely and gracious and smelled like mints (because hes a smoker). And the locals said he was just awesome and would stop and sign every autograph and take every picture.

Oh, and does anyone remember the comedian Ant? He was on celebrity fat club on vh1? He did a show at my college and asked me to sit on his lap for a picture. That was weird, but makes for a good story.

I’ve never seen any celebrities but I don’t live in a place they would visit. We didn’t make any weekend plans because the weather is supposed to be crummy…raining the entire time except well the temp never reached above 20 degrees today so it is snowing (AGAIN!) instead of raining…we don’t typically get a lot of snow but it has snowed at least 1-2 days a week for the past three weeks. I know I shouldn’t complain because it isn’t as bad as other parts of the country but I’m just really tired of the snow (as I’m sure many are)!!!! And my husband just texted me that the road we live on is covered so I’m checking out of the office and going home…have a good weekend everyone!

About Kate Hudson, do you mean she was a total bitch when you sighted her? Or just you don’t like her generally?
    *
My favorite celebrity sighting I guess was Elliott from ET only because, you know, we made out. Who wants to talk about that again? For a brief moment I almost forgot it happened but I’m happy to relive that moment if anyone else wants to.
    *
In other news, I’m waiting for a fax to go through before I can leave. It must be fax filed today and I need that confirmation page and my secretary has to leave. Faxes seem so outdated. Riiiight?
    *
In other other news, something is wrong with my baby Moose. Wednesday morning – literally, all of a sudden, on Wednesday morning, he developed an aversion to my hardwood floors. Concrete is fine, carpet is fine – heck, the tile in the bathroom is fine, by the pup will not walk on the hardwood floors. At first I thought it was because his nails were getting long, so I rushed out and we got him a nail trim. I’ve tried leading him on the floors with his leash (which he fights with all his heart), and I’ve put his favorite treats just a couple of feet from the area rug. He goes close to the edge and reaches and reaches but doesn’t get on the hardwood to get the treats. It’s so bizarre! And when I carry him down the hall, he clutches to me and shivers – he’s so scared. Once I put him in the middle of the hardwood floor and he just wobbled like bambi and froze up and was shaking. WHAT THE HELL?! I’ve called the vet and am waiting for a call back. Until then, I just carry him from rug to rug. I’ve moved his food and water to the edge of the big area rug in my living room. And I laid out beach towels from the bedroom to the living room so he can now traverse the apartment himself. Otherwise, he’s happy as a clam. His paws don’t appear hurt. He eats well. Etc. Has this happened to anyone? Maybe I should start a forum. I’m really nervous about my baby boy!

I waited on Kate Hudson and she was a total beyotch. Really entitled, loud, obnoxious (she kept getting out of her seat and dancing around and talking really loudly and just generally wanted everyone to notice her), and didn’t tip at all despite ordering a lot and leaving a big mess. And she was rude to me, too.

Is it possible that he’d gotten some ice or sand/salt from the roads stuck in his paws while he was outside for a walk and it felt weird or hurt when he walked on the hardwood floors? Dogs can be really particular about their paws, and now he might be associating the hardwood floor with his paws being uncomfortable not realizing it was just junk from outside that was the problem.

I just remembered, during the 90’s when the Bulls were popular, they practiced in my town and your always see them around. Once I saw Scotty Pippin in a Sports Authority, another time Phil Jackson at a sushi restaurant, and we would randomly see players around town. It was pretty obvious who they were, since they dwarfed everyone else.

Oooh I was up in Brooklyn a few weekends ago and Ethan Hawke had breakfast beind me. Like for an hour we were chilling at tables right next to each other and I never actually saw him! I knew he had been walking around the restaurant but hadn’t realized he sat down behind me until after we when left the other three people at my table (who could see him) commented about him being there. I’m still annoyed about that.
    .
Otherwise I live in DC and so get stopped by motorcades all the time, most recently I saw Biden in his car. One time I went for a walk in my neighborhood and the secret service stopped us because the Obamas were having dessert at one of the local restaurants and I guess were about to be on the move. Hmm, OK, sightings in everyday life I can only recall seeing the lead singer of the Offspring in a Denny’s with one of his backup dancers (this was right after a daytime festival show). That’s probably my only legit, totally random celeb sightings – like not at an event or something. On movie sets, red carpets, cons, or other film events I’ve seen Robert DeNiro and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (both from a distance), managed to get close to Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, and seen a shit ton of folks live in panels, too many to list. Those don’t really count because everyone does that sort of thing. Same with music festivals – though at a recent fest I did meet/get photos with Paul Qui and Reggie Watts, so that was cool, and also got within viewing distance of Ryan Gosling (close enough to mention, but not close enough my panties melted or anything). I also got to meet Bob Bullock and Lady Bird Johnson before they passed, so that was cool.

I once saw Christopher Lloyd in Rome. I didn’t bug him because he was doing stuff. I saw Molly Shannon in the airport one year during Sundance (I still haven’t gone celebrity spotting during the festival itself, but I’ve been tempted).

If you count Con attendance, I’ve met quite a few cool celebs. I loved the Animaniac guys (and I met Winnie the Pooh!), they were all super awesome and down to earth. And I got my picture taken with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Billie Pipper. Best picture ever!

My brother’s best friend worked security at a concert venue and another family member did as well. Once they were driving Type O Negative (a metal band that my brothers’ friends all love), and the lead singer asked if they could listen to some music. So they turn on the CD player and it’s the band’s album. The guys driving quickly switched to the radio and were embarrassed, but the band pretended not to even notice.

Pierce Brosnan (IN A TUX, walking down the street on the night Goldeneye premiered!)

    Ricki Lake

I heard Sigourney Weaver lived in my neighborhood, but I never ran into her.

I’ve met a lot of celebs at the sci-fi cons I go to, mostly in the form of meet and greets. Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam from True Blood) and Rose McGowan are both very nice and TINY. Alice Cooper is also a great guy. I dressed up like him, which seemed to amuse and impress him. David Carradine was horrible. Like “don’t look him in the eyes or breathe his air” horrible. I don’t know why people like that go to sci-fi cons.
    .
I did get to actually HANG OUT with Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flannery one year. They were slightly drunk but very nice guys 🙂

I’ve had some pretty epic celebrity sightings in NYC…in no particular order:

Liza Minnelli (We saw a play and she was in the audience, but I saw her outside, smoking with two young hot dudes, after :D)
    Woody Allen
Yoko Ono (she was wearing an entirely silver suit)
    Padma Lakshmi
Anthony Weiner with his wife and daughter (We locked eyes as we passed on the sidewalk, he totally knew that I knew who he was)
George Alexander held open a door for me at my college campus where he was touring with his son
I’m also pretty sure I saw the blonde prince from Into the Woods at the Atlanta airport over Christmas? Right after I saw the movie. It seriously looked like him…

Ooh, those are good ones. I’d definitely love to spot Woody as well as Yoko one of these days. And when I was watching Girls last night, I thought of another wish list celeb sighting: adam driver. Because I love him.

When I spotted Woody Allen I was just like “of course” haha. It was during my first few months in NYC too!
