Weekend Open Thread

Happy Friday! How was your week? Mine was pretty good. I’m happy to report that, after that rough stretch with Jackson last week and weekend, things were much better this week. It helped that it was finally warm enough to play in our neighborhood playground again and he was able to burn off some of his cabin fever. We did have a sad note though when our good friends had to put down their 17-year-old dog on Monday. I used the opportunity to start a conversation with Jackson about death, which I didn’t really prepare for in advance, but it went ok anyway. And then we made our friends a card and a bouquet of flowers and told them how much we would also miss their dog. Anyway, if you also find yourself in a position of discussing death with a young child, these articles (which I read after the fact) are helpful.

Changing topics, what are your plans for the weekend? Tomorrow we are celebrating my father-in-law’s 95th birthday (!) with extended family in Manhattan. I’m looking forward to eating cake, which has been my number one craving this pregnancy. At our friends’ going-away party a couple weeks ago, I had a piece of cake that I am still fantasizing about. It was cold yellow cake with chocolate frosting (from Whole Foods! And it was vegan!) and it was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten and I wish I could have some every day. Or, at least every day until this baby is born.

Anyway, enjoy your weekend. Eat cake if you can!

I’m excited for a Pi day party tomorrow. Assortment of tasty circular foods, math jokes, and board games.

There might even be cake, if someone’s feeling sort of contrary

Ahh, I forgot it was pi day! It’s one of my favorite holidays. I’m going to a cake place tomorrow, maybe they’ll have some pi day surprises…

My group of friends has been planning for Pi Day for like two months. It’s a little ridiculous.

But hey, cake tasting (in my opinion) was the best part of planning a wedding (but… this is coming from someone who didn’t want to plan a wedding and kind of hated doing it)

Lol, it isn’t even a cake tasting, it’s me being like, if I have to talk about wedding stuff at all (this is an “initial planning meeting”), it might as well be in the company of Bassanio, good coffee, and something sweet. So, to the cake place we go! (I’m also someone who didn’t want to plan a wedding and so far I’m doing as little wedding-directed work as possible.)

My plans this weekend are to sleep as much as possible… and hang with friends…
    .
You guys, I think daylight savings coupled with it’s the week before my period has seriously fucked with me. I’m super tired and I’m having trouble concentrating. Hence, the sleep lots this weekend.
    .
As for hanging out with friends, barring a wedding and bachelorette dinner, tonight is the first time my friend D is coming out sans baby and husband!!!! It’s not a big night, there are five of us eating sushi at a BYOB joint, but I’m super excited. Don’t get me wrong, I love hanging with her entire family, but I’m excited she’s going to dinner with us.
    .
Have fun celebrating and eating cake Wendy!

I’ve been extra tired this week too and couldn’t figure out exactly why. I thought maybe my iron was low, but daylight savings seems a likely culprit. Here’s hoping you get all the extra sleep you need!

        Also been exhausted this week!
I couldn’t pay attention in class for the life of me. ANd nothing’s changed- I’m sleeping the same amount, just an hour forward.

So weird how these things mess up your inner clock

Co signing on the extra tired this week! Getting out of bed for work in the morning has been brutally. && I’m epically tragic at mornings. Pretty sure the DST change is the culprit.

I’m having cake too! Well, we’re meeting the wedding planner at a cake place near us (it’s my new favorite place, something my waistline does not agree with). I’m really hoping we will need to input as little as possible in this whole process. Well, except for the cake, because cake. And now I’m craving sweets again…
    .
And Bassanio’s mom has been acting weird recently. I’ve known her for 9 years, but it seemed like she was always ok with our relationship being through him (not that she’s terrible but the difficulty level in interacting with her is high). But now it’s like, here are the daughterly things you now have to deal with, and I’ve been responding with a combination of uncomfortable laughter and thanks but no? I’ll navigate this eventually, but figuring this out without Bassanio there as even a sounding board is difficult (he’s been working almost constantly lately). I hope this weekend doesn’t mean even more emails and calls…

The meeting wasn’t terrible. I think the cake helped. Mmmm….
      .
But I think we may be involving our parents a little bit more. I hope we don’t regret this.

Does Bassanio have any sisters? My husband doesn’t and I think his mom really wanted me to be the daughter she never had. I’m not and as an introvert the harder she pushes the more I pull back…

Oh Bassanio has a sister, and she’s got the grandkids too, so the mom’s set with all that. Although you may be on to something, that some of it may be my introvert reactions – both her kids are super extroverts, so it’s probably not something she’s used to. I’m working on reaching out to her in ways I’m comfortable instead of avoiding.
        .
Her daughter also just kind of puts up with certain aspects of her mom that make me extremely uncomfortable, so I’ve explicitly pushed back. Which is also uncomfortable, but hopefully worth it in the long run. But then there’s mental health issues I don’t want to touch with a 10 foot pole…

So I’m a graphic designer and yesterday I caught an acquaintance of mine had plagiarized and copied some work I did for a client and made money off of it (presumably). The concept, typography, colors, structure, content, everything was copied. I’ve had strangers steal my photography before but it’s frustrating and sad that someone I know would do this.
    .
On the plus side, my best friend is flying in tonight to visit me. She’s a teacher and spends every spring break visiting me, which I’m very grateful for. My husband is staying with a friend tonight, so my friend and I are going to have a fun girly sleepover, watch movies, and bake. I think we’ll make some red velvet cake with buttercream frosting, but I need to find a vegan recipe for my friend. Mmm cake is the best.

I’m having cake this weekend, too! Yay for birthdays.

And I just realized tomorrow is pi day. I will have to come up with a yummy pie that I can make tomorrow.

IN other news, I found out the job field I’m applying in has a massive hiring freeze and budget cuts. And I’m stalling on applying for jobs and generally being bad and slow at replying to emails. It gets really tedious to send lots of job-hunting-related emails out all the time, especially when I’m barely getting any interest because of budget cuts and hiring freezes.

I love Joni Mitchell! And that song, and basically the whole “Blue” album. Anyway. I’m happy because it’s supposed to be 80 tomorrow!
I also am having a dilemma in that I have a crush on this guy at my gym… who seems to be especially friendly to me (he works/trains people there) and I am debating randomly asking him out or just leaving it be. I dunno. Could be totally embarrassing and then I’d have to avoid him, or it could work out ok….

I have no plans this weekend and I’m super excited. Also Mr Freckles comes home after being away for work for a week, so I’m happy about that too.

Also I’ve decided I want to move abroad, and right now I’m thinking Germany. I’ve been to Munich twice, and I love Germany, and I love Europe, and I love traveling. I need to do more research, and it makes me super nervous to think about picking up and moving to another part of the world. But I think it’s something I really want to do. I dunno, anyone have any experience picking up and moving to Europe?

PI day is my birthday. Hopefully there will be cake somewhere along the way. It used to be called steak and sex day for the longest time. The men’s valentines day a month later so the prominence of PI day works for me. I like steak an all but it’s no pie!-

On talking to young children about death, I saw this video clip from Sesame Street a few years ago (posted on my FB news feed) and thought it was right on target. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did… the relevant part starts around 1:45. 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxlj4Tk83xQ

I actually watched that clip a few months ago when it was linked on some Sesame Street anniversary thread I came across. I thought it was handled so sensitively and wisely and I made some mental notes of how to approach the topic with Jackson when the time came.

I just sent some of those Mills Caramels to my friend who just had her second, a little girl! Her son has been sick and the introduction to two has been rough so I figured she could use a little something indulgent just for herself! I’m too far away to just pop in like I wish I could do and help out!

Today is another three mile day in my training! Yikes, I’ve never walked/jogged this much before. So different than doing zumba and burpees, at least to me!

Thank you for supporting my friend with your Milis purchase! And congrats to your friend on her new baby girl. Good luck with your training. I have upped my daily walking now that it’s warmer (walked 7 miles yesterday and even walked over 10 miles last sunday) and my body is definitely not used to quite this much activity. I think I’m at the max of what I can handle at this point in pregnancy, so I’m not going to push myself anymore, but knowing I will have to slow down soon, I’m trying to take advantage of the second trimester boost in energy and the warmer weather while I can.

She is awesome! She even included a little not for me. They might become my go to gift, this means I’ll need to try them at some point 🙂

I just started walking daily before I was just doing classes daily but I’m noticing a big difference even adding just a mile after each class. With bigger numbers on the weekend!
