Weekend Open Thread

Screen Shot 2015-08-08 at 6.46.26 AM

I’m posting the week’s Weekend Open Thread a little late, sorry. Drew took the day off yesterday (instead of a summer vacation this year, we’re enjoying down time at home, including occasional Fridays off, while Joanie is still a little too tiny to travel). Yesterday morning I cashed in a gift certificate and got a massage, which turned out to be the best massage I’ve ever had, and exactly what I needed a month after giving birth. I feel like a new person! Afterward, a good friend of mine who also took the day off work, and who moved to the ‘burbs a couple years ago and whom I don’t get to see often enough, stopped over to visit and meet the baby. And then after that, Drew, Jackson, Joanie and I went to the park and had ourselves a little mid-afternoon picnic.

Now it’s 7 am on Saturday and I’ve been up for an hour and a half. I have to make breakfast for my family and hit the farmers’ market, but that’s as far as I have planned for the weekend. At some point I want to get air in my bike tires and go for a ride (I haven’t been on a bike ride in about 10 months). What are you all up to this fine weekend?

Massage and a picnic sounds like such a nice day! It was such a beautiful day on Friday, too. I’m jealous, I should just make up a picnic and tell Bassanio to follow me if he wants food.
    .
I’ve been having some issues at work and finally got to the bottom of it all. Unfortunately the solution is deal with it and continue to overcompensate for others’ ridiculous behavior, but at least it’s only for a few more months. And I’m feeling a little better knowing it’s not me.
    .
We also started getting RSVP’s in and everyone is so excited, which is making me look forward to it a little more. The big day’s only a little over 2 months away…

I finally get to see the Book of Mormon musical tomorrow. In Salt Lake City, which will be fantastic.

I think it’s completely sold out and tomorrow is the last day.

Haha, then maybe not. Let me know what you think of Book of Mormon, especially seeing it in Mormon country!

It was fantastic, there were a lot of jokes that I’m sure are completely missed outside of Utah. But they were definitely picked up today. My husband is an ex-Mormon (he left the church before going on a mission) and really enjoyed it too.

Sounds like a lovely start to the weekend Wendy 🙂 I’m having a day out with my daughter since my husband has a work event today. We started out at the library to get books. Then lunch, followed by the playground in a small botanical garden. I plan to get some good reading in during her nap (picked up China Rich Girlfriend – sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, which was a great beach read). My husband’s colleague from another city is spending the night with us because of the work event, so while they drink scotch and talk shop, I’m going to catch up on Bachelor in Paradise. Then tomorrow I’m getting a massage.

Currently our plans for the weekend involve trying to maintain sanity. Its going so-so at this point. Between the vitamin d drops and adding a small amount of formula to his diet, the baby is super gassy and fussy. Hopefully he’ll adjust (and better vitamin d drops should help).

We are going to go for a walk downtown in a little bit, feed the ducks at the lake and get some delicious Five Guys burgers. Yum.

Love that pic! Sounds like a great start to the weekend.

My husband and I are having a much needed full day date. We got a couples massage this morning, then went to the local Institute of Contemporary Art. Now we’re having margaritas and tequila. Next we’re hitting up Del Frisco’s where my brother and sister in law work for a late lunch. Then, who knows!! Loving this day 🙂

My husband and I saw Avenue Q the other night and I laughed so hard I had to wipe my eyes and nose on my glasses cleaning cloth because I didn’t think I would need tissues. Our 12 year old son was in a snit because he was too young to go. Glad I didn’t let him prevail because the 2 women who run his voice studio were there! And people from the theater where he had his last play as well as people from his next play. I would have been “that mom” who is a terrible parent… So he just had to deal and we had a date night! Yesterday our son took the bus alone for the first time too! Pretty exciting! Tonight he has a friend over for a sleepover and we’re making pizza!

Love Avenue Q! And it’s probably best you didn’t go with your son. I went with my parents when I was in my late teens/early 20’s and it was SO awkward. But that’s probably due in large part to my family dynamics and being daughters… That show is a riot!

I managed to sprain my ankle pretty badly on Wed night and have been using crutches. My husband had to go away for work this morning so he asked his parents to come help me out with the cats and stuff while he was away. They were coming for a visit in a week or so anyway so they drove up. Now my ankle has suddenly improved enough I can get around ok and I’m entertaining my in laws by myself for a week. Send help! lol

New product alert: I needed some new eye cream and chose L’Oreal Revitalift Miracle Blur Instant Eye Smoothing Cream at CVS. Skinny red tube.
    .
I’m 40 and my eyes are not quite what they used to be, so usually when I take a photo I smooth it out just a bit with my pinky underneath the eyes where the bags are. But this stuff makes it look like you did that already. I took eye selfies with and without makeup and texted them to my mom and Lianne and they probably were like fuck off, but they couldn’t deny this product is effective. My husband wants it too for when he goes out, so I said just use mine.
    .
Also, hair tip, maybe you all know this already but if you’re blowing your hair out smooth with a round brush, take each section once it’s dry and roll it around the brush from the end to the root, hold it for 10 seconds or so, and roll it back out. Makes it look nicer.

Wella Elements is a great sulfate free shampoo for if you have color or curls or Keratin and want something gentle but effective.

I love hair tips… by roll the hair around the brush, this is a general upwards movement?

Like, when the section is still hot and you’ve pulled the brush through to the ends, just roll it back toward your head like a big roller. So your hair is all wrapped around it. Let it cool, then unwrap. The brush won’t tangle in your hair if you just roll it back out the same way.

Hmm…. Is this in response to the photo of me??? I have a newborn! I’m not getting in sleep! I *barely* have time to shower, let alone blowdry each section of my hair smooth. Also, I’d gotten a massage earlier in the day and still had all the oil in my hair when this photo was taken. Stop picking on me!

Products are my passion. I work for a company that tests products. I’m crazy and have no hobbies. But those suggestions were in no way directed at anyone in particular.

Ok,ok! I just happened to think that my under-eye bags/wrinkles and my greasy hair looked particularly… um new-mom-ish, and then I read your comments and I was like, oh, Kate thinks so, too! But now I have a new eye cream to try!

Ok I just received the coolest product! It’s a lipstick that must be 100 years old. It belonged to my great grandmother and came in a box of family things someone sent my dad. I was able to scrape out the little bit of residue with a q-tip and put it on. It’s actually a really pretty color that looks good on me. The case is a fancy engraved silver thing, with a turquoise stone for a clasp. Looking online, it looks like a lot of ladies must have had them, and maybe you refilled them? Anyway, very cool. I want to have a chemist make me a replica of the lipstick itself because I really like it.

We went to a wedding on Block Island and it was wonderful! I’d never been there before. The setting was gorgeous, the wedding was lots of fun (it was like a college reunion), and there was a great sunset.

Is that in Rhode Island? Or CT? I am pretty sure that I always see that ferry station from the Amtrak Acela on the way to NY because I sit on the left side of the train where the water is. I remember thinking a few times how pretty it looked and being curious what Block Island is like. Should I go?

It’s part of Rhode Island, but it’s close to CT and the tip of Long Island as well. Yes, we took the ferry from New London, CT and the Amtrak station is right by the ferry you take to get there. You can also take a ferry there from Point Judith, RI. I would definitely recommend going! The buildings are old and quaint and cute, and most of the places to stay are Victorian looking B&Bs. There are a few larger hotels but they also are old and have huge porches. The whole place has a relaxed feel. There is a car ferry from Point Judith, but most people just bring their bikes over on the ferry, or rent bikes or mopeds on the island. We just walked, it was very walkable. We didn’t get to check out the beaches but some of my friends who were in town for longer did. There are beaches with really cool bluffs, a couple of cute lighthouses, etc. And good seafood of course!
