Weekend Open Thread

Guys, look what happened to my teeny, tiny baby in the past six weeks! Her newborn days are half over, which means summer is also winding down. We didn’t (and probably won’t) go anywhere this year, but having a baby smack in the middle of summer is a good reason to stay put. And, of course, this will be a summer we’ll always remember even though our scenery never changed. And maybe we’ll make it to the beach one time before it gets cold. Coney Island is only a subway ride away, after all.

How are you spending these waning summer days?

So cute Wendy! You should take another of these in 6 more weeks if she still fits in the crib ๐Ÿ™‚
    .
I’m going to try to do some outdoor yoga this Saturday and then go to the farmers market, and meet a good friend before he leaves town. On Sunday I have to catch up on some work, but I may do some of it in this super hippie coffee shop that makes my work feel a little less soul-sucky, and I may also try to go paddleboarding if the weather cooperates.

Tonight I’m feeling not so great, but my super awesome boyfriend went to the Jewish deli and got me matzo ball soup and pastrami. So that was really awesome to come home to. I’m hoping I feel better so I can go outside and play this weekend, maybe head to the beach, bike, but we’ll see.

Tomorrow is my husband’s big event that he’s been planning for almost a year as his side hustle, sponsored by Red Bull! And there’s a party afterward. If you live in Boston and see some craziness going on on the Charles River, it’s the Red Bull High Stakes Rowing Regatta.

It went amazingly well! Red Bull wants to do it again next year and double the size. There were Olympians racing, and both Red Bull and my husband’s company got big publicity. His company provided all the boats. And there was a big crazy party at night where everyone had a blast. The whole thing was a huge success. Thanks for asking!

Hahahaha, no! There’s a lot of eye candy in there though, isn’t there? My friend has her eye on one of the dudes on the winning team. Total thigh-show. In fact, she was so inspired by the race and the “douchey guys that are so my jam” that she wants to sign up for “Learn to Row” classes on the river this fall. I’m going to do it with her because why not?

Mine is the one in the blue T-shirt and Staff badge. He has a walkie-talkie in one pic. He was a lightweight rower so although he’s tall, he’s not as huge as some of those guys. He was on two National teams though.

I think the Flannel guy works for Red Bull. I bet he is a snowboarder, they do a lot of snowboard events, and I know one of them was a champion.

I am mostly doing housework this weekend, and relaxing some. Mostly housework though.
Medical internships don’t leave me with a lot of time to do this stuff during the week, so I am doing laundry and vacuuming and all that stuff.

She is such a cutie, Wendy! And really growing like a weed. Baby’s first trip to Coney Island sounds like fun.
    .
Yesterday was me and Bassanio’s 10 year anniversary. Can’t believe it’s already been that long! And we’ll have a new anniversary date soon, which’ll be pretty weird, and also no longer during restaurant week – that’s been pretty useful over the years.
    .
Otherwise, this weekend is not very exciting, but I’m going to try to finish up a fairly involved knitting project I’ve been working on. It’s coming out really good so far. Maybe the dance music Bassanio’s been playing will make me knit faster…

I’m building a boat. A sailboat to be precise. And my dog, Cookie, has developed a taste for the sawdust I am generating. Completely ignores the bowl of fresh expensive dog food, but munching on sawdust like it is her job.

Is this the weekend Lyra is getting married?

That’s so cool. I wish I could build a sailboat. I’ve known some pretty gross dogs that would eat really stinky things, but your dog almost sounds like she suffers from PICA. I wonder if she’s low in iron or copper?

I am building a Puddle Duck Racer, which is basically a rectangular box with a curved bottom and a sail. About as basic as a boat gets, but it is my practice boat. I am building it to learn all the techniques I will need to build the “real boat” I have plans for. And to teach my kids how to sail.

That is so amazing! What a great adventure for you and your boys! (I think you’ve said you have sons?)I took my boy canoeing for the first time this summer. It was so peaceful and beautiful. We’ve never been sailing, yet. We’ve just read treasure island and I think he would really be in to more boating. Alas, it will have to wait for next summer.

You know that human babies are considered being born premature compared to other mammals http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/why-humans-give-birth-to-helpless-babies/

    http://cavemother.blogspot.ca/2009/05/why-are-human-infants-born-so.html

So she still has some time to do….

These are interesting. I always heard about humans being born helpless because brain size was so big that it wouldn’t fit in the pelvis if it was fully developed. I hadn’t heard the theory about the baby outpacing the mother’s metabolic rate. It makes sense.

I didn’t realize being born earlier being favorable for brain development was even a debate. Human brain development needs to be adaptable to culture and social conditions. Babies need to be able to develop language skills. A need for a more stimulating environment outside the womb for optimal brain development seems self-evident to me.

Obviously human infants need to be born helpless. We are not fast, strong, great climbers, swimmers, or the best at seeing, hearing, smelling at great distances at full maturity. We have the ability to thrive through interdependence. Human attachment is so fundamental to what we are and how we have survived. The bond between infant and caregiver needs to be exceptionally strong, I’d think. That helplessness has to do with forming a bond as much as forming a brain. They are almost one in the same because so much of the brain is devoted to communication. Babies seem hardwired to look at faces and soak in what the social structures will require them to become. This is so interesting! I wish I had studied this in college.

Hi all! To update: the wedding was seriously wonderful…more than I could have ever asked for! Navy Guy is now my super handsome HUSBAND (!!!!!!!) and I have time to update on DW because my suitcase didn’t get into the car that was headed to our hotel so he is out getting me pants and coffee right now haha. We partied until they kicked us out, I lost track of how many drinks I had by about 5 pm, and the best part was dancing the night away with our close friends who closed the night with us. Seriously wonderful!!!
    .
And…to answer the question you all are dying to hear about…we were not planning on doing it last night but once we got into it…we decided what the hell!!! And it wasn’t mind blowing of course but was definitely better than expected. ๐Ÿ˜‰
