Weekend Open Thread

Hey, look — a personalized stocking for Joanie! And only a few days after I realized we didn’t have one. We get our tree tonight and decorate through the weekend, so the timing was perfect, and no one will be scarred for being forgotten. Not that I could forget Joanie; she’s usually attached to me in a baby carrier, after all. This week, I did forget: bottle nipples (twice); formula (once); Joanie’s hat; my coat at someone’s house; and my phone at home (which ordinarily wouldn’t be such a big deal, but I needed it to look up the address and directions to Jackson’s Thursday morning dentist appointment; luckily, I managed to find the office the old-fashioned way — talking to strangers – and even got there with ten minutes to spare). When a friend of mine told me on Wednesday that she walked all the way down the block after dropping off her son at school without realizing she’d left her younger son there, too, I felt pretty good about my own memory lapses this week.

Anyway, as I mentioned: We’re getting our tree tonight, which is one of my favorite nights of the whole year. After the kids go to sleep, Drew and I will share a bottle of bubbly and maybe something dessert-y and watch holiday movies and listen to Christmas music and start decorating the tree (oh, the sacrifices and concessions my Jewish husband has made being married to a shiksa). Tomorrow afternoon we have a kid’s birthday party, in the evening we’re getting a sitter and going out for dinner and holiday partying, and on Sunday we’re going to some friends’ tree-trimming celebration. All of this holiday merriment and it’s going to be like 64 degrees here this weekend — a record high, I bet.

Before I wish you a happy weekend, here’s another friendly reminder as you do your holiday shopping that any purchases you make through my Amazon affiliate link (and any link on this site to Amazon, including the big one on the sidebar, counts) will help support DW since I get a 4-8% commission on all purchases. Last year, the commission I made from affiliate commissions paid for a whole year of site hosting, so it really adds up and makes a difference. Thank you for your support! (You only have to click-through once for all the purchases you make to count).

And if you need gift ideas, please check out my many gift guides, including this week’s stocking stuffer suggestions!

Happy weekend, everyone!

My BFF (also my husband’s cousin) and his husband fly in from Amsterdam tomorrow and I am sooooo excited! They will stay with us through Tuesday and then I’ll bring them to our hometown. But it’s the first time since I got together with my husband my BFF is home for a major holiday so it will be fun to officially celebrate as family 🙂

It sounds like you have a nice night planned! I’m super excited today because I managed to get tickets to see Bruce Springsteen at MSG next month! It’s going to be the 11th time I’m seeing him in concert. Soon I’m off to dinner with a couple of coworkers and a former coworker who is soon moving to the other side of the world for work. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Ha! I like hearing about others’ lapses. I’m not the only person who has forgotten a kid or two. Parenthood is grand! Hope you have great weekend and get some down time just for you. That stocking is awesome. Happy weekend!

Sounds like fun! I have a dilemma. My work holiday party is this weekend. I forgot to RSVP because I thought I already had (it was an RSVP for something else). I emailed the organizer to ask if I had, and her response was basically like, “nope! :(” Now I’m not sure what to do. My co-workers tell me I should go anyway. It’s essentially a potluck with the department paying for the meat (which I’d probably just not eat). But I feel rude, particularly since I specifically asked and wasn’t told to come anyway or something like that. Thoughts?

I say go. It’s a potluck. No one is going to judge. Just write back to or corner the organizer at the party and apologize for the oversight. Then compliment her on what a lovely job she did.

Thank you, both! I went, and it didn’t appear to be a big deal. There was way more food than people.

There’s almost always more food than people at potlucks. I’m glad you went. I think sometimes organizers just get overwhelmed and try to stick to set rules, even if they don’t make much sense
