Happy Friday! How was your week? Mine was pretty good. It began with us digging our way out of and through all the snow that had piled up on Saturday, which is particularly challenging when you’re carrying a baby or pushing a stroller. (I did not even attempt the latter since most crosswalks weren’t cleared of massive snow piles until Tuesday or Wednesday.) We made it through unscathed, though, and maybe even burned a few extra calories in the process.

Speaking of burning calories, I tried out a spin class in my neighborhood on Tuesday. I’ve been looking for something to kick my ass and get me into shape, and, since I’ve never “spun” before, I decided to see what it’s all about. Well, this particular class I went to — and maybe they’re all like this, I don’t know — was done in the pitch black. The only light in the whole studio was focused right on the instructor, like a DJ in a darkened club. And she definitely doubled as a DJ. That music was LOUD. So, between the total darkness and the thumping tunes and my general not-so-in-shapeness, I wanted to puke up my guts right from the get-go. And then the instructor, who was yelling out things like, “Thirty more seconds of hell and then two whole minutes of recovery! It’s always darkest before the dawn!”, said that, if we truly felt like we were going to barf, that was our body’s way of telling us to rest. So… I pretty much spent the whole class resting! Right there in the pitch black on my stationary exercise bike. Not sure if this is the fitness class for me, but I bought a 2-class trial, so I’ll give it one more go, anyway.

What else? Oh, I’m getting my hair colored today. I haven’t colored it since before I got pregnant with Jackson and I’ve been wanting a little aesthetic pick-me-up and this seemed like a good choice. My hair has faded a lot in the last decade, so I’m hoping a new shade will brighten my complexion and make me feel 30 again. Or, at least, like a less tired 39. After that, I’m going to see a friend’s dance festival tonight, and then I’m hoping for a solid night of sleep (Joanie is teething though, so this is much more wishful thinking than realistic thinking…). What are you up to this weekend?

Have fun getting your hair colored, I always feel totally refreshed after a salon trip. On a similar note, you always have great recommendations in general, would love a post on skin care products! I’m creeping up near 40 as well (yikes) and need to stop half assing it before it’s too late.

I swear by Eminence products! I get a professional facial once or twice a year and that’s always what the estheticians use. I’ve been using eminence for about a year or so and have noticed a big difference. The product line is pricey, but worth it. If you were only to splurge on one of the products, I’d say the best bang for your buck is the Eminence Firm Skin Acai Moisturizer.

Wendy – that picture of you looks fantastic!

I just got to move into the ‘corner office’ in my work, which used to be my cool boss’ before she retired. Everyone else who had claim above me didn’t want it because it’s too hot. And because I’m cold all the time, I jumped at the chance. It has windows across two of the walls, so I don’t have to turn on the overhead florescent light. And there’s enough light/warmth that I’m thinking I’ll do my seed starts for my garden this year in my office and keeping a little herb garden here. Only downside is that it’s away from all the cool folks in the office, so I’ll be lonely.

I’m planning on going out snowshoeing this weekend. I got some for Christmas, and then promptly came down with a nasty flu that I’m *just* starting to get over, so I’ve only taken them out once. I’m going to go out with my good friend and her husband and my pup. Pretty sure the pup will adore snowshoeing.

Ahhh, I want some snow!! I absolutely love this picture Wendy. We’ve just had a lot of rain this week, which isn’t near as pretty. We might try to go up to the mountains tomorrow, though, so my son can have his first experience with snow. I mean, I bought him a snow bib, so we might as well try to get some use out of it!

We have had epic storms down under over the last couple of days and I got caught right in the middle of a really bad one last night on the freeway. It was a really scary drive and I was lucky to make it home in one piece with no hail damage to my car. It looks like more is on the way too which is annoying. Still, I have a trivia night to go to tonight which is always good fun. Exercising the brain over drinks is a great way to spend a Saturday night in my books.

Wendy, I felt the same exact way after my first spin class. Mine was dark, but not pitch black, and the only bike left was right in front so I couldn’t rest as much as I wanted So I just pretended to add tension when we were supposed. It sucked and I was a bright shade of red for hours following. But! I tried it again a year or so later at a different gym and it became my go-to work out for about a year.
    .
Tonight we’re just watching the baby do somersaults in my belly! So cool!! And I’m getting my first prenatal massage on Sunday morning followed by brunch with Kate and a few other friends. I’m looking forward to a delicious Bloody Virgin Mary with bacon, shrimp, and other delicious garnish. happy weekend all!

Ugh, I just cried into the sink while washing my face and then had sushi and Prosecco and am already in bed. I’m getting my period tomorrow and ate candy today, and I had to put an employee on a “plan.” It’s a big mess that someone else created when he hired her and then quit right after, and she’s not going to make it, she’s just not the right fit. She has the option to walk away now but I’m afraid she won’t take it because she doesn’t like to give up. Sometimes it IS better to walk away. The whole thing is just shitty. And meanwhile I’m trying to pick up a ton of stuff to do my new job well, so my brain hurts. And traveling every week. It’s been a hard month.

Someone asked about skin care. Gentle cleanser. Vitamin C serum. Maybe another serum to target a particular issue. Eye cream if you want. Antioxidant day lotion. SPF 50. Same at night but replace the last two with retinol night cream.

Recovering. I just today was my first day off after working 18 days straight. Most of which were 13 to 14 hour days. Whew. The film HOSPICE has now wrapped. Fun shoot, but it is challenging to be an ENTIRE department. 😉

My work week has been rough. Just a lot to finish up on a deadline (which is almost there) and some other stuff came up today on another project. Ugh. I wish there was some snow outside to play in right now!
Wendy, I used to go to spin class at my old gym pretty regularly for maybe 3-4 years, and for awhile I was going 3x a week. It was really tough at first and I hated it, but what worked for me was finding a class that had a teacher I liked and who played good music. Some teachers focus on different things (sprinting vs climbing) and some do the same thing every class (which gets boring), and some play terrible music (disco, anyone?). I found 2 teachers whose classes I felt really pumped in, and focused my energy on getting to their classes as much as possible. I hope that you can find something that works for you!!

I’ve been working crazy hours and weekends for the past few weeks, and no signs of stopping any time soon. I’m dreaming up a list of things I want to do when things settle down. So far I’m planning on watching season 2 of Mozart in the Jungle, cashing in a gift certificate for a facial that I’ve had forever, getting a bikini wax, inviting my new lover to my city for a weekend (after the wax, of course). Oh, and I need to find a way to celebrate my birthday and (hopefully) a Panthers Super Bowl win in the middle of all of this madness. For the time being, I’ll just live vicariously through everyone else’s adventures.

Wendy, for Joannie’s teething, try some infant Tylenol. I do it for my little LuLu. But only if her gums hurt that she is crying. Her first tooth popped and the second one is trying, and she has been in some bad pain lately. She handled the first tooth do well, but this one is giving her problems. I give LuLu 2.5ml of infant Tylenol, and a water teething ring (not the gel kind, I am scared the get might come out and be harmful) and she is like a new baby. And it helps her sleep when she is in that much pain. Good luck! Joannie’s first tooth should be popping up soon because her and LuLu are a month apart. Good luck and rest well!

BTW, I go by the doctors instructions for the Tylenol. Because of her weight. So ask your doctor first is you are not sure. Do not guess on it, because you don’t want to give too much or too little. But you probably already know this. ?

Yeah, I need to get baby tylenol. We were pall night again, Joanie crying in pain for hours, poor baby. I remember Jackson going through this for weeks before the first tooth finally cut through. I hope we’re not in for that fun again…

Oh I know how tough it is. I know the docs say that by 6 months you can use children’s Motrin, but I stick to the Tylenol when she needs it. LuLu is 18.5lbs so she gets 2.5ml. She is napping right now. Buy again, I don’t like to over use it, so I only give it to her when she is crying in pain. Also, she spits it out so it out my finger in her cheek and squeeze a little bit out at a time and I close her mouth (gently) with my other hand. It is a pain I the butt, but she swallows most of it.

Put my finger** and I make like a pocket that I squeeze the Tylenol into. After that, I gently but quickly close her mouth and she swallows it. If I don’t do that she will spit it all out.

My dr recommended Motrin or Advil for teething (apparently ibuprofen works better than acetaminophen for it?) but we tried that last night and it didn’t help him at all. Tylenol is likely going to be our go-to.

Depending on the age of the baby, ibuprofen or Advil and aspirin (I could be wrong so please don’t quote me, but look it up) can cause a harmful disease/disorder called Reye’s Syndrome. That’s why it is not recommended for babies under a certain age. But I do find the Tylenol to be the most helpful only because I will not try anything else.

Aspirin is the medicine to avoid because of Reye’s syndrome. Ibprofen is fine for six months and older and I think was way more effective for my son. You can look up studies done by companies that manufacture both acetaminophen and ibprofen and even those say ibprofen works better for more symptoms.

Ibuprofin takes down swelling and is a painkiller, acetaminophen is just a painkiller. So it makes sense that ibuprofin would work better for teething, since there is some swelling too.
        .
What my doctor recommended though is to switch them off. Do Tylenol one time, then Advil/Motrin the next time. That way your baby doesn’t get too much of any one thing and doesn’t get used to it. Doing this you can also overlap if you really need to (as in, dose them more often than if you just use one or the other), although I didn’t personally feel comfortable doing that. But if he was really sick maybe I would have.

My best friend from home came to visit me this weekend. Friday night we went out and drank way too much. Yesterday we went shopping because I needed a professional wardrobe because I got a new job that I start in a week and at my current job, yoga pants is the norm. So I had some work to do. Today I’m just relaxing and going to enjoy every minute of it!
