Weekend Open Thread

Jackson is beginning to notice that we have pets and that pets are … cute. And fun! And they make good pillows. Miles was lounging on the couch one afternoon this week and sensing a good photo op โ€” Jackson was wearing his red “Brooklyn” sweatshirt, after all โ€” I sat Jack next to Miles and told him to “smile for Mama!” As instructed, he smiled brightly into the camera, but it was his other gesture that made my heart explode into a million pieces. As he grinned for me, he ever-so-gently reached for Miles’ paw and he held it long enough for me to snap several pictures. Years and years from now, long after Miles is no longer with us and Jackson has left home for exciting adventures of his own, it’s moments like these I’ll think of when I remember the “good ole days.”

This week, it was better. How was yours?

Completely adorable! I love his smile so much!

Things are really starting to come together for me; this week was very good. I applied for my dream job (a rare hiring opportunity came up), my family and I are getting along very well, I love my boyfriend very much, my friends are all doing well, my “future in-laws” have begun calling themselves such, I am feeling emotionally and spiritually positive. To put it simply — It’s All Good ๐Ÿ™‚

Cuteness overload! Loveeeee the BK sweatshirt! If I accidentally procreate anytime soon my baby will be wearing Lower East Side onesies that I saw in a shop on Houston St the other day. Though I’m sure if my hypothetical baby grabbed my cat’s paw I would be taking a picture of my cat chomping on hypo-baby’s hand- not a good look for my hypothetical baby!

this week was hell at work. i worked late almost everynight, and i already work 10 hour shifts, so i am sleepy and kind of sick now too. oh, yea, im sick becuase the heat in our apartment doesnt work. they said that they fixed it- they didnt. the night that i came home, took a shower and went to bed with my hair wet and my boyfriend was hogging all the blankets and i was absolutely freezing- that morning i woke up with something weird going on in my nose, and now i cant stop sneezing and blowing my nose. i dont care that google told me that you cant actually get sick from having wet hair in the cold, it just happened to me on weds. also, im not excited about having to work sunday night, which is my and the boyfriend’s only day together, and then i get to have weds off because we are doing this weird training thing only in the morning. and he will be working on weds. ugh! stupid.

Wendy sent me these pictures earlier in the week, and I thought J looked adorable as always, but when she posted it here, I immediately noticed the hand/paw holding and my heart melted. I’m so lucky to be Jackson, Miles, and Simone’s aunt.

I’m so happy my sister is feeling better this week, which has made me feel pretty good this week. I lost my job last Saturday, so this week should have been awful, but it was fairly productive, filing for unemployment, looking for work, looking at grad schools, etc. And today I spoke with an excellent attorney, who gave me some hope.

I haven’t decided yet if I want to stay in Austin or move back home to Missouri, so if you know of jobs in either Austin or anywhere in Missouri (preferably St. Louis or Columbia), please let Wendy or me know. I’m an RN looking to transition into library work, and my nursing background is in family planning.

Thanks, DW community for being so supportive of my sister and for making this site what it is!

Transitioning into library work within Austin is really hard, as UT has a master’s degree program for librarians (I’m an alum). If you’d like any advice on apply to library schools, just let me know!

Ugh, sorry for the triple post, but I just wanted to clarity- transitioning is hard because most of the graduates from the program want to stay in Austin (who wouldn’t?), so it’s super competitive. Many of the clerks at Austin Public end up going on to get their Master’s, and they tend to be the first hires. To be a librarian at UT or any other major university, it is highly recommended to also have a master’s in another area as well. I believe there is a demand for medical librarians at hospitals, and also at UT for their nursing program, and your RN degree plus a Master’s in Library Science/Information Studies should be enough.

I’m so happy to hear that you are doing better, Wendy!!

My week was awesome. I don’t like celebrating Valentine’s Day and neither does my boyfriend, we didn’t do anything special…BUT I got a cupcake from one of my students for Valentine’s…even though I’m a substitute teacher! Seriously made my day. The work week was short because yesterday and today I attended my state music convention (basically all music educators get together and attend seminars, listen to music, and be merry). It was awesome because I got to catch up with friends who I haven’t seen in FOREVER. Tonight I went to dinner with a close friend who I literally hadn’t seen since last year and we ended up talking for like 3 hours. So fun. Not to mention it’s been nice having time away from students for a couple days. This week I also started two Jillian Michaels workout DVDs. Let me tell you…if you want to get toned, her DVDs will help you! I already notice a difference and I’ve only been through each DVD maybe 3 times. My goal is to look amazing in the sexy new red dress that I bought online a couple weeks ago. It didn’t quite fit when I first tried it on, but I’ll get there! ๐Ÿ™‚

The only real crappy thing that happened this week was when I donated blood a couple days ago. The dude who was helping me out didn’t stick the needle in my arm right so it hurt like craaazy. It actually still kind of hurts now, two days later. He wasn’t paying close attention so the needle didn’t go in like it usually does. I feel good that I did something nice for somebody else by donating but my arm has been KILLING me. Grumble.

And now, it’s time to curl up in my boyfriend’s sweatshirt and read my book. Aaahh, I do love quiet Friday nights. ๐Ÿ™‚

This was my third time donating (started last fall) so I really wasn’t worried because the first two times I didn’t feel anything after the initial stick. I don’t know if he hit a nerve or what, but it was ridiculously painful. He had already started filling the bag before I could tell him that my arm hurt so I just suffered through the 10 or so minutes. I also didn’t trust him to stick me again. It’s so weird because it only hurts when I stretch my arm out all the way but fortunately it feels much better now than it did.

Once I was giving blood and the flow slowed up, so the tech went to adjust the needle. He accidentally hit the retract button, and the needle popped out of my arm. Because my arm wasn’t raise or anything, my arm started bleeding everywhere. The guy just stared while my blood started going all over the armrest, and I started scooting away on the chair so I didn’t
get it on my pants. Finally the panicked guy yelled help as I asked for some gauze to put pressure on it and a girl came over and applied pressure to stop the bleeding. I haven’t donated since!

that is like the number one reason i dont donate. i have never heard good stories of those people. they take like a 2 hour course and then start sticking people with needles.

also, if someone is sticking a needle in me, i better be keep the hole or putting paint in it.

Don’t be discouraged, katie! I’ve had great experiences prior to this week. I’ve found that if you get the older ladies, they’re usually pretty good. My first time I was super freaked but I had this AWESOME lady helping me out and she helped calm me down. She was great at small talk too so I just forgot that I had a needle in my arm.

This past week also I also had this lady who took a full minute to get my blood pressure, which is pretty much unnecessary…I mean, it should only take 15 seconds, if that. She let the air out slooooowly so my arm was almost totally numb by the end. I guess it just wasn’t a good day for blood donation. I go to the same place every time because they have a blood drive there every two months. That makes it easy to remember when it’s time for me to donate again. Next time if I get the same guy that I had this past week, I might excuse myself and run to the bathroom first so I get somebody else! Ha.

Miles used to be 24 pounds (!!), but then we changed his diet and got him down to about 18 in a year’s time (our vet said that losing more than half a pound a month was dangerous for cats). Then he got sick in September and lost three pounds in a week and got all the way down to 15 pounds which, on him, was so skinny. We haven’t weighed him in recent months, but I’d guess he’s at least back up to 18 (Jackson has quite a ways to go before he catches up with Miles!).

They do lose weight super fast when they are sick, cause they just stop eating and drinking :(. When my cat got sick about a year ago he even stopped meowing ( he is a Siamese and talks a lot) that was when I was able to convince my mom that we had to take him to the vet ( I paid for it but shes the one with the car). I had to leave him like 4 days at the vet ๐Ÿ™

Anyway, Jackson and Miles look super cute and it’s great that the cats accepted the baby ๐Ÿ™‚ (they can be so jealous!)

A for my week, it went really well. There was Valentine’s Day, which was awesome. Work was OK. Still having motivation problems with it, but I really like the people I work with, so it’s all good. My best friend is dating a douche and I’ve been trying for YEARS to get to open her eyes to see and she’s finally coming around, so that’s good. They have a kid (their problems have been going on since before their daughter was born) so she’s reluctant to MOA, but he’s obviously miserable, which pisses her off. It’s just not a healthy relationship and she is SUCH an awesome person who deserves SO much better than this guy.

I am going to show my boyfriend these pictures. He always tells me I will have to get rid of my cats if we have a baby. I’m not sure if he truly believes that cats and babies can’t peacefully coexist, or if he’s just being a turd to get a reaction out of me. It’s probably a combination of both, though; lots of people seem to believe that babies shouldn’t be around cats. Why is that? Disea ses or something?

Yes but you see that’s because the cat needs you, so it is pretending to be friendly. But if your cat and dog took a magic pill that made them twice your size, you’d see that your dog would still be your friend… but your cat would eat you and run away. There was a scientific study done that confirmed it. Hey, don’t shoot the messenger! ๐Ÿ˜‰

        That is hilarious!

My cat always meows at me when he wants to eat…they have a plate with food at all times, and he will meow at me even if it is full. So I have to follow him to the kitchen and stay there until he starts eating, and he will sometimes check if I am still there while he eats. To get him to eat I usually have to pet him. When I am not home though, he eats on his own! He even wakes me up in the middle of the night sometimes and it is really annoying i hes food plate has food in it.

I also give him fresh meats when we buy some, if I was him I wouldn’t like to eat cat food all the time either ๐Ÿ˜›

I guess you just have to be careful that the cat doesn’t scratch or bite the baby. And make sure they have no fleas and/or parasites. Some cats can be really jealous and they could attempt to hurt the object of their jealousy. Another problem could be that the baby is born with a cat allergy ? I have no idea if one is already born with allergies.

I think that if you teach the cat to be nice to the baby then nothing will happen and they will eventually become friends.

The first cat I ever had (Zeus) lost his lil brother and when we brought another kitten (Athena) home he was incredibly jealous. He would not even let the poor kitten use the litter box and if she did he would take out of the litter box whatever she had done in it (lol). Eventually they became super close and the were like brother and sister (this one time Athena was about to go out on the street and Zeus started meowing and made me follow him so that I could rescue the kitten)

Much later in time we brought another female cat to the house (Jade). Everything was fine while Zeus lived, he kept the peace between the cats. As soon as he died though, Athena started harassing Jade and eventually chased her out of the house. The poor cat ran into our neighbors house who had Rottweilers…. So cats can be super jealous, and I think that would be the main problem

      >> Why is that? Disea ses or something?

the big concern is Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite. It’s especially dangerous to fetuses but can harm children as well. Cats are common carriers. It’s passed through their poo, which they scratch and then track around the house. But not all cats have it. An indoor cat that doesn’t eat rodents isn’t likely to acquire the parasite.

If I deworm them would the parasite die or not?

I think that takes more than deworming. It’s one of those bacteria that lies dormant in the nervous system. IIRC there’s an antibiotic. Your vet will know.

I think it’s a blood test to find out if your cat has it, and antibiotics to cure it

I was raised with cats (I got a dog when I was older, so eventually I had both growing up). I have photos of me in diapers surrounded by cats. He’s just a nassssty cat hater. Hissss.

(Though preggo ladies should not change litter boxes, so maybe he doesn’t want to have to have that task if y’all get pregnant, but oh well. It will be the least of his tending to your needs).

I don’t really ever squee over babies (I’m a puppy girl). But DEAR GOD that is one ridiculously adorable baby.

Disclaimer: I’m a long-time lurker, first time poster. ๐Ÿ™‚ Wendy, Jackson and Miles are tres adorable! I love that photo SO MUCH. (And Miles looks JUST LIKE MY CAT who is back with my mom in NY – I live in DC)

This weekend was good, class as usual on Saturday (I’m in a part-time master’s program in Public Comm. at American U.) and I’ve had a couple dates. I had a bad breakup in September and I’m just starting to date again. I had a good time but I’ve been on a bunch of dates with this other guy, who is really nice and not like anyone else I’ve dated before, AND I really like him! So we shall see what we shall see. ๐Ÿ™‚

I wish there was a way to keep that picture on the front page all of the time because it makes me smile. I’m sure I’m not the only one it has that effect on.
