God, what a week! So much terrible news in the world. And bad news close at home, too (as I mentioned earlier, some good friends had their cafe — where I typically sit and work on DW in the mornings and where I often take the kids for a treat after school — catch on fire and sustain extensive damage). But in the midst of so much despair and sadness, there are beacons of hope and rays of sunshine. Joanie turned one yesterday and I tuned out as much of the noise as I could and focused on the joy she has brought our family and what a blessing she has been to us in this last year — a year that, for us personally, has had some pretty intense ups and downs.
I hope that you are also finding your rays of sunshine and beacons of hope and tuning out the noise when appropriate and focusing on the things, big and small, that bring you joy. I don’t know what the answer is to all the madness happening around us, but I like to think we can counteract it not only with protests and demands for change and raising our children to be good and just and tolerant, but also by sending ripples of positivity and kindness into the world. Do something good for someone else this weekend. Be the beacon of hope we desperately need.
