Weekend Open Thread

Holy crap, this was a big week. Halloween was Tuesday — the kids went as Santa and an elf, and if you follow me on Instagram, you know Drew and I were reindeer — we closed on our new place on Wednesday (with last minute drama just to make it fun), started renovations Thursday morning at 8, and right now, Friday evening, I’m packing for our flight tomorrow to St. Louis to visit my grandmother — whom, you might remember, had a heart attack a few weeks ago — as well as my parents and other extended family for a long weekend.

And since we hope to move at the end of the month, and we’d love renovations to be done by then, I have about, oh, five minutes to finalize decisions on paint colors, wall paper, countertops, backsplash, a couple of ceiling light fixtures, staircase banister, and measurements for the closet I want created because, after living in nine rentals with my cats and never having a great place to put the cat litter, I’m finally building a damn closet to put it in, complete with a little cat door for them to go in and out. Brilliant, n’est pas? Of all the things to be excited about — which includes my own bath tub that I don’t have to share with my children, eeee! — I may be most excited about the litter box closet.

Anyway, the next few weeks look to be as busy and overwhelming as this one has been, so getting away this weekend might be a good thing. (I booked the trip before we even signed a contract on a place, so I had no idea this would be such a busy moment for us.) I’m looking forward to seeing my grandmother and catching up with family, some of whom I haven’t seen since before Joanie was born. Not sure if I’ll have time to get new columns up for Monday and Tuesday, but if I don’t, I’m sure there are be some new letters in the forums to read and respond to.

Have wonderful weekends, everyone!

Congrats on the new place Wendy! It sounds amazing! I know it’s super stressful now, but you’ll get everything done I’m sure 🙂 Things always work out!

I know how you feel a little. We closed on our first place a few weeks ago and we’re moving in less than two weeks. We’re also doing some work, and my husband is super slammed at work, so almost ALL of the coordination and meeting with contractors is falling to me. Plus I have a baby shower next weekend that I RSVPed to before we signed a contract, and now I don’t know if I can make it, as it’s a four hour drive away in my home state (and I’d be driving by myself to boot). I’d feel terrible missing it as it’s her first kid, and she’s a good friend, but I have SO much to do with the house and packing and I’m totally stressed. My mom has the gifts and offered to drop them off for me and I’m tempted to take her up on it. But I still feel guilty. (Also the idea of driving eight hours by myself isn’t exactly appealing.) Any advice anyone?

Get the gifts dropped off, and call to bow out now( asap), Freckles. I’ve noticed people respond better when it’s sincerely meant apology and some notice. Make another trip to visit when less busy. She’s your friend & hopefully she’ll understand. It’s a baby shower so a few others are coming, so it isn’t solely dependent on you.

I agree. Call and express sincere regret, but explain the house situation and ask if you can make a trip to see her when things aren’t so nuts. Hopefully she’ll understand.
