Dear Wendy
Dear Wendy

Weekend Open Thread

Hi! How was your week? Mine was really good. I asked Jackson’s babysitter to change her schedule a little bit so that her three mornings with him are broken up through the week (Monday and Tuesday, and then either Thursday or Friday) and what a difference it makes! I used to be so exhausted by Friday evening, having been on full-time mom duty since Wednesday afternoon, and trying to squeeze in whatever work I could do while Jack was napping, but it’s much more civilized to have a day at the end of the week — when I’m the most tired — when I get some help.

Drew had his wisdom teeth taken out this week which I’m sure was a total drag for him and I thought it would be for me too since he’d be kind of out of commission, but it wasn’t so bad. I made a lot of soup and discovered a new recipe for black bean soup* that we all loved a lot, so that’s a plus. And I learned that if you add half a container of Philadelphia onion and chive cream cheese — which I had leftover from a recipe I made last week — to a basic potato leek soup, it takes it to a whole new level.

Yesterday, Valentine’s Day, I got to meet my friend Matt — he used to be one of the guys from “His Take,” if you remember — in the city for lunch (with Jackson), which was fun because Matt actually lives in Chicago, so it’s a special treat to get on a subway and go meet him for lunch like it ain’t no thing. He’s performing on a cruise ship with Second City for a few months and the ship docks in NYC every nine days, so once every week and a half I can meet up with him for a few hours. It does a soul good to have a long-distance friend so accessible, at least for a little bit.

For Valentine’s Day, Drew got me those stemless champagne flutes I featured on my gift guide (I think he got them when they were on super sale because he is a smart man like that), as well as this awesome faux fur throw that I mentioned in passing because I’ve been wanting a substantial blanket to curl up under on those cold evenings when we’re couch-surfing the night away (i.e. watching “Billy on the Street,” eating ice cream, and going to bed at 9:30). I got him socks. But they’re really nice socks!

I totally had an idea for an open thread today that I know you all would like, but this has gotten long so I will save it for next week. Wanna talk about how your Valentine’s Day was? Any plans for the weekend? What are you reading?

* If you make this recipe, note that I made the following changes:
Added two extra garlic cloves
Used two cups of chicken broth instead of the bouillon cubes and water
Added about five small-ish carrots (not baby carrots)
Added 1/2 tsp. chili pepper
Left out the cornstarch

The recipe sounds good! I think I’ll take out the peppers (allergic) and try that out soon.

We’ve always done President’s Day instead of Valentine’s Day, but he gave me a really beautiful flower arrangement yesterday anyway. It’s kind of funny because he had never bought flowers before, so when he saw the florist pull them out of the refrigerator, he thought that’s where we had to store them. haha

I cooked dinner yesterday for the first time in almost two weeks. It turns out my innocent fall down the stairs at work injured my knee, and I’ve been limping around since then. By the time I get home in the evening, I pretty much can’t walk anymore. My fiance’s been doing so much for me while I’ve been going stir-crazy and getting fat on the couch. Cooking yesterday just about killed me, but I was determined to do something nice for him. We’ll exchange gifts this weekend.

I’m meeting with a photographer and videographer this weekend, thank goodness! It’s probably the only affordable company around here with amazing reviews. We’ve been choosing only vendors with excellent reviews, and I love all of our choices so far. I have high hopes, so cross your fingers! We’re apparently only 78 days away now, according to my registry. We’re also going to the venue to look around and get some more ideas. It’s coming together!

And speaking of registries, I’m just dying to tell someone and ask around, but I really can’t. I just went to my BB&B registry to add something today, and I noticed that someone bought ALL of my china place settings!! Like, who in the world?! I’m so confused. I want to know who, but I can’t exactly ask, ya know?

How’s your wedding planning going? Are you any less stressed?

Oh yay! Photographer/videographer are some important checks!! Do you have a plan for table decor yet? I love table scapes.

We’re 99 days away now, eck! We got a TON of stuff done between February 1 and now. Invitations ordered, meetings set up with the photog, dj, chef, our wedding certificate (the Quaker one) designer). Table decor is finalized- just needs to be ordered. Favors/place cards are finalized- just need to order the baggies. We went to Jos. A. Banks and got the fiance fitted for a suit, just waiting on the next round of colors to be released. Got my dress fitted. Yeah, my stress level is like a 2 now, February first it was like a 9.

I totally registry stalk. It’s probably a really bad thing, but truth be told I am excited about gifts. I have a shower coming up in two weeks and the invtes just went out. We had one of the fiance’s bartending regulars buy all of our casual placesettings. Huge surprise!

Wow, you have been SO productive! I’m thoroughly impressed. 🙂 No wonder you’re not as stressed as you were. It would be so wonderful to just be able to relax closer to the wedding. You’re well on your way to getting to do that if you keep it up!

You can’t help the excitement about gifts. I don’t need gifts by any means, and I don’t expect a lot, but it’s like seeing something under the Christmas tree. You just have to go shake the box!

My fiance picked out the tuxes and got fitted a couple of weeks ago, which was a huge relief. We don’t have much done on the tables though. I bought a bunch of cheap, mismatched candy dishes from Goodwill so we can put candies and/or Chex Mix on the table before the meal is served. I’m really excited about them for some reason. We also have a lot of jars and vases, and my mom is making the table runners. We don’t have flowers or anything yet, but we’re getting there. I’m hoping to go through my parents’ shed soon and pull out all the antique farm items they have from my great-grandparents we can use as decorations. I’m going to work on the invitation wording this weekend so we can have those printed ASAP too.

        Do you have “wedding colors?”

I decided to stop being stressed and just get shit done. So that’s what we’re doing and it’s working out pretty well.

What is she making the table runners from? I wanted to make my own but got annoyed with fabric choices and prices and am leaning towards using Kraft paper for the runners now.

Have you thought about Cosco (or a similar store) for flowers? We’re going to buy our baby’s breath for the ceremony decore from there.

Our “wedding colors'” are prett much white, tan and a little green accent. Since we’re not doing the bridal party the colors are a little more fluid. We ordered rings too. I forgot about that, haha. We might have been a little tipsy when we did. Are you DIYing your invites?

        theattack February 15, 2013, 5:16 pm

We’re going with the trendy rustic theme, so we’re using burlap for table runners. My mom just ordered a huge roll of it. That’s a good idea about buying baby’s breath at Cosco. My only hesitation with that is refrigerating the flowers. I’m not sure what we would be getting into, ya know?

Rings are a big project (and cost) out of the way! Have you gone back to look at your choices sober? haha We’ve gone to look at rings, but I can’t find anything that looks right with my engagement ring. I might just be overthinking it, but what I want doesn’t seem to exist, and I just want something really simple! I’m getting frustrated with rings right now. I’ll go buy his in the next few weeks though.

No, we’re not DIYing invitations. We bought several boxes of them with coupons at the craft store, and we’re hiring someone to print on them. They look like fancy invitations, but they’re going to end up being one of our cheapest expenses. Your colors sound so pretty! I love white and tan together.

Also, I was thinking yesterday how jealous I was that you were smart enough to forego a wedding party. One of my bridesmaids has STILL not ordered her dress, and I’m getting freaked about it. They were supposed to do it in December or early January. I know getting the groomsmen fitted for tuxes is going to be like pulling teeth too. You definitely made the right decision there.

        GatorGirl February 15, 2013, 5:31 pm

We went to a few stores to look at rings and ended up ordering them off of amazon. They aren’t super price-y (like $350 for both) and there was free shipping and free returns. I figure we can always upgrade in a few years. This is mine
        And this is his

Good point about refrigerating the flowers. It might be worth a call to see if Costco has any suggestions. They have the cheapest prices I’ve found for bulk flowers and the best reviews.

It just dawned on me that I was the WORST bridesmaid for my friend 3 years ago. Not only did I wait until forever to get my dress, but I purposefully bought it a size too small so I would be motivated to lose weight. The last 2 weeks before the wedding I did great, but it wasn’t enough. So the day before the wedding, my mom had to let the dress out the side and shorted the thankfully-same-color sash and use the extra fabric from the sash to widen the dress. Then, the day of the wedding, the hair stylist gave me the shittiest “wedding” coif – you know the look. Well of course I bitched about how dumb my hair looked, and… now that I think about it, the bride was getting a bit pissy with me. I didn’t understand why b/c I just went home and had my mom redo it – looked so much better and more natural.

yea, from what you guys are saying, i think i was shitty. i need to call this friend of mine and apologize.

I know this advice isn’t easy, but I recommend for the attire you just *let it go.*
I gave the bridesmaids a color, a store, and a deadline and then I just didn’t ask. Ever. Whether the dress arrived, whether it fit, nothing.
If they showed up without a dress it wouldn’t have mattered whether I worried about it for weeks or found out the day before, it still would have had the same end result. And whenever I got the urge to ask one of them, I told my fiance and he told me not to. Good system.

For the record, one of the girls- like AP- was way behind on everything and had to do some last minute alterations. But you know what? I had no idea so I didn’t stress about it. And my backup plan? There was a JC Penney across the street from the hotel and I was going to tell them to go buy a black dress in their size and life would go on. Them not matching wouldn’t have ruined the wedding, and nobody would think less of the bride for it.

We’re doing kraft paper runners over white linens with a black latern (the Ikea Borrby lantern) and a bunch of candles. Super simple and cheap! We’re going to have white napkins too with a little kraft paper bag tied with green ribboon filled with flavored tootsie rolls as the favor.

Yeah, I fell down the stairs at work last week just being clumsy. I went to a doctor on Wednesday, and I’m going back on Tuesday. We did an X-ray, and nothing’s broken. It has to be either a very badly bruised bone or torn cartilage. We’re hoping for the bruise obviously, but if it’s not better by my next appointment, we’ll probably have to do an MRI to check out the cartilage. For now I’m on a codeine and couch-surfing regimen.

Yay! I’m glad you are better rested. It’s also awesome to see old friends. Sometimes they just GET you the way that new friends can’t, at least not until they’ve known you for a few years. My week was OK. I think taking more vitamins (and vitamin D) is helping with my energy levels a little. Valentines day was a bit of a bust. I thought we were just getting takeout from our favorite indian restaurant, but my BF actually wanted to go there. So dinner took like 2 hours and we got home at 9pm. I was totally pooped and cranky by then. But, I’m cooking us a fancy dinner tomorrow–Whole Foods here I come!– and we’re exchanging presents.

I’m also getting my haircut tomorrow. For the first time since…wait for it…September! My hair is down to about my waist now (in the back) and I seriously need a trim. Still keeping it long, but it won’t look ratty anymore. This is literally because I didn’t have money during the holidays for a haircut.

Lastly, Girl Scout cookies arrived today. So..things are looking up!

I enjoy eating at the counter of a restaurant or bar that isn’t too crazy crowded, and reading a book or magazine. That way you get the “company” of other people but still just to enjoy time with yourself. Valentine’s Day was… weird. I’m transitioning between jobs so I’m at my parent’s house, most of my stuff either in boxes from moving it here, or suitcases for moving out next week. Single, knowing nobody else other than family in the city where they live now. So I spent the evening with champagne and Jason Segal movies.

But this weekend will be good. I get to see my nephews and work on the rest of this bag of chocolate I bought…

The first half of this month was awesome for me. We got a TON of wedding crap taken care of and my stress level (about the wedding) has plumited.

I am really frustrated about money though. I can not seem to catch up on bills etc. I’m paid a salary from my full time job and my part time job pays minimum wage so it doesn’t add much. I shouldn’t complain too much since I’m lucky to have two jobs, but it’s frustrating. Also saving for this wedding is hard. We should have started 11 months ago when we got engaged!

I’m really excited for the weekend-my daughter’s Dad will have her Saturday morning through Monday afternoon. Weeee! I never get 48+ hours to myself. She and I will have our normal pizza and Netflix night tonight (yay) then I get to spend the weekend with my boyfriend. His birthday is Monday, which I’m really nervous about, because I hate giving presents. Especially to someone you’ve known for about 2 months. His favorite movie is the Royal Tenenbaums, so I got him this print:

I really hope he likes it. Also got a cheesy but cool Arrested Development t-shirt from Target. Please advise if these are super lame gifts so I can mentally prepare myself ahead of time.

It’s been a really long week here. I’m finally getting over all my bugs, but now some of the kids are sick. Eryx has my gunk, Matt’s stomach is plaguing him, and Jake has been throwing up since last night. Greg is Greg and relatively unaffected by all manner of black death roaming our house.

Parent/Teacher conferences were this week, so we had half-days at school. Two on Wednesday (elementary school) and one yesterday (jr. high). Today the kids were off (school in-service day) and we’re all off on Monday (President’s Day). Eryx turned 4 on Wednesday.

It’s snowing (again) and we’re expected to get 3-6 inches today (not including the little we got overnight). It’s covering up the slush/ice mix of the last few days’ worth of warm-up. Gotta love Anchorage’s false-spring.

I hope to get some rest this weekend. I kind of doubt I will though. The SO works all weekend and I’ve got the kids all home (between illnesses and grounding).

My Valentine’s day was very scaled-down, but perfect. I’m actually sick, (and have been for a week, bah.) so I slept pretty late yesterday. Boyfriend sneaked out in the morning and brought me fake (but beautiful!) flowers, because I’m sick and he didn’t want to upset my sinuses anymore than they already are. I realize fake flowers don’t SOUND romantic, but it really warmed my heart reading the part of his note that explained that. He also bought me a SUPER comfy t-shirt, and went to the library and got two books that I’ve been looking for but hadn’t found yet. Then we spent last night eating soup and watching a Redbox movie. It was all very sweet, in a low-key (but perfect for us!) way. 🙂

Hmm… Valentine’s Day: I made crockpot porkchops with fried potatoes and green beans, and we each wrote each other cards which was just what I wanted. I also tried to get creative and found a recipe for a cocktail that is basically just raspberry jam, gin, and club soda. Which turned out to not taste that great, but he liked it well enough and it was pink so whatever I tried. Then we watched an episode of Game of Thrones, snuggled, and went to bed.

This weekend I have to study a LOT because two exams this coming week, and 2 exams the week after that. And next weekend I will be gone at a conference Friday/Saturday, AND learning how to ultrasound sheep most of the day Sunday. Yay for real-life hands on stuff, but Boo for not having lots of time to study.

We planned to go into the city to get take out of my fave sushi (not ready to take this baby into a restaurant!) but we had to leave in between feedings, so that meant 3pm and the restaurant doesn’t open til 5 so we got take out from Montana’s. I hate chains but they were open so we did it. We also got a giant mixed cheesecake with my husband saying “lets get fat together!” He’s not kidding, either. Food issues and the bastard can’t gain weight if he tried.

I gave him his card this morning because by the time I remembered it was 8:30 pm and we were in bed. He is making me a gift but still working on it. Man, do I ever want the spa day I’ve had for the last few years but $350 is off the table right now and I can’t leave E for that long anyways.

I had a awesome time yesterday. Went over to my best friends house to drink wine, watch a rom-com (we picked When Harry Met Sally–SO many classic lines!) I over did it with the wine–Chocolate Strawberry and yes it tastes like it sounds, and the awesome cookies she made. So today I have not only a hangover, but a sugar hangover. We reminisced on how bad off we were last year, but are so much more healthier emotionally this year, if a little discouraged at dating still. Tonight I’m off to a concert a friend of a friend Invited me to. I don’t do concerts often so I’m excited to expand my horizons. Heading home to nap, then get all pretty when I wake up. I love happening weekends!

I am mostly a lurker, so I’ve only posted a couple of times, but I was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer last year and had a surgical consult about it Valentine’s Day morning. It went well – they want me to do three more months of chemo before determining if I’m a candidate for surgery. Well, I’ve done ten months so far, so three more months can’t be that bad, right?

My hubby went WAY overboard for Valentine’s Day, which made me feel bad for the small things I got him. I got flowers, a big heart-shaped box of chocolates, two pieces of jewelry, a hefty gift certificate to my favorite spa, two regular sized Valentine’s Day cards and two 2-foot high Valentine’s Day cards.

The only thing I always want for Valentine’s Day is one of the 2-foot high cards, just because he has made it a tradition to get one of those for me each year.

I was very overwhelmed, but very appreciative, too! He’s always been wonderful about special occasions, but I think the cancer (which has an average survival time from diagnosis of 21 months) has made him go over the top.

Hope everyone else had a good one!

We didn’t do anything last night because I was prepping for a job interview today (cross your fingers for me!! – presentation kind of bombed (nerves + talked waaaaay too fast) but the interview part went well I think). But I did get a nice little purple potted mum and a couple packs of mini-eggs. He went out searching for the popping ones, but they’re not out yet (pop rocks in mini-eggs – sounds gross but surprisingly good). So tonight we’re going to make a pork tenderloin and find something on Netflix to watch. Tomorrow morning we’re getting up early to drive to his mom’s in BC for the long weekend.

    Dear Wendy,

Do not knock a good pair of socks! You are probably too young to remember Bill Maudlin’s classic cartoon series about Willy and Joe, archetypal American infantrymen of World War II. One of them shows Willy thanking Joe for saving his life by giving him the greatest gift he has to give: his last pair of dry socks.

As for Valentine’s Day, I am happy to report it went quite well. In what is becoming our tradition for the day, I took my sweetheart to lunch at her favorite restaurant here in Portland, Little Bird Bistro. We had an amazing meal; culminating in sharing a Meyer Lemon creme brulee that is a new entry on my list of Best Desserts I Have Ever Eaten. Of course, as I told her, the fact that I was sharing the meal with her made it about ten times more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise.

Note to self: I need new socks. New (and very awesome) socks.

Backstory: All of my socks are starting to fall apart. The few that still have matches, that is. I’m known in my office for having “eclectic” clothing styles (one of my bosses swears the inspiration for NCIS’s Abby is me) and even though I’m starting to conform somewhat on meeting days, I refuse to change my socks. So, I could look very, very professional, and still wear red/black striped Jolly Roger socks to a board meeting (and did!). Or a very nice skirt and TARDIS knee-highs with a meeting with the Governor’s representative. But, alas and alack, my socks are worn down and too holey for me to mend. I must get some new ones. *sniff* *sob*

    Suggestions on awesome socks?

I want TARDIS knee-highs so badly for derby – it’s one of the rare times wearing weird clothing is actively encouraged. I have Batman leggings, yellow and gray striped socks, blinding neon green socks, and a shirt that says “Fish fingers and custard, please,” among other strange items.

I told my husband to skip gifts this year so he just took me to one of our favourite seafood restaurants for dinner. Normally I don’t like going out on the 14 th but this place was relaxed and just full of regulars so nice. A little sad I could have our regular oysters on the half shell but the crab cakes were yummy too.

This weekend is just about family. My mom comes home tonight! Yay! She’s been gone for two weeks so I’m excited to have her back. And she’s bringing me real pineapple and mangoes and guava from Guyana. The pineapple they sell in North America just doesn’t even taste real in comparison. And Monday we are telling my husband’s family about the pregnancy and are surprising his sister with a family day ambush to celebrate a recent promotion she got at work involving our niece coming back from university as a extra special surprise. So it will be nice to see everyone and I love the way my husband laughs when he is with his siblings.

My Valentine’s Day started off fine enough. I go to Zumba once a week at the gym (we have to pay $1 if we’re a member, or I’d go everyday…even $1 can add up), and our instructor gave us those clapper things in the shape of hearts so we could make noise during class and she had some giveaways (Zumba wristbands and the like). A lot of the women in the class, including her, wore red/pink stuff, so it was a nice way to brighten up the room, and all our songs were about love/passion/etc. It was a blast and one of the fastest moving classes I had with her. She even finished up by telling us that this was her favorite class yet she had taught.

I have to work Thursdays, and I have a job with untraditional hours, which meant no plans for me except beef roast with the parents at home. I started to get sad at night when friends and family, my mom included, posted pictures of their gifts and gushed about the days they had. My one very good guy friend who is married (I never dated him; we never felt that way about each other) was trying to make me feel better, but I just felt so sad that I didn’t have anyone to care about me on V-Day. One of my friends even tried to downplay how I felt by telling me I had no reason to be sad and it wasn’t a real holiday…yet she was posting pics on FB of the chocolate covered strawberries her parents got her and gushing about how great her life was. I felt like crap after she talked down to me and avoided her today when I saw her.

Anyway, no real plans for the weekend. I worked tonight, have work tomorrow night and Sunday. My mom’s bday is next week and the second part of her present came today. That was nice because it came earlier than the website I ordered from said it would. Yay!

I find that when people overly post about their relationships and brag on Facebook it’s because they are insecure and feel like they have to prove something. Don’t be jealous of that! Someday you’ll find someone that you are so in love with that you don’t need to post a picture of crappy chocolates to show that he loves you, it will be obvious. Until then, you always have us at DW!

My week has been good for the most part. I took 3 tests between the span of Tuesday and Wednesday, so that sucked, but at least I got to relax on Valentine’s Day. The holiday was good! We opened our presents in the morning (I got him an Alternative Apparel hoodie, he built me a transportable herb box that is hanging over the balcony) and drank mimosa’s. Our roommates were supposed to be gone for the evening so we decided to stay in and dress up fancy and cook dinner. We made a gourmet meal (http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/chicken_bacon_roulades/), complete with molten lava chocolate cakes, and we bought a fancy bottle of cabernet at Whole Foods. We had one minor hiccup when the roommates decided to stay in. For the most part they left us alone, but at one point during the cooking process they decided to come join us in the kitchen and cook dinner for themselves! My boyfriend told them that we’d be out in 20 minutes, but 1 roomie still made a beeline for the oven and tried to put in her frozen meals. We all yelled a collective, “NO!” Haha. It was a good night.

The roommates in general have been driving me crazy lately, though. It goes in cycles. Some days I’m cool with it and don’t mind and other days I can’t stand it. Last night, for instance, they didn’t tell us that they wouldn’t be coming home for several hours after work, which is only a big deal because they have a golden retriever. We kind of need to know if we need to take the dog out, ya know? And this morning I woke up to eat a bowl of cereal and realized that they finished off the last of our milk. I don’t mind if they drink some, but finish it off? That’s just inconsiderate. I think it would be better if my boyfriend would actually say something about it. Not rude, just bring it up! “Hey, don’t finish off our milk in the morning. You know we eat cereal!” Instead, he just says that’s how it’s always been and I have to be the one to bring it up.

So I’m kind of stressed about them right now, but I’m sure I’ll get over it. I’m going to see the Rite of Spring at the ballet tonight, so that should be fun, at least!

I’ve made it a few times in the past, but Thursday was the first time I prepared the creamy wine sauce that goes along with it. Holy hell, it’s so worth it! It took the meal to a whole new level.

I want to kick all of their asses! I feel protective of my Wendy. Fine, “our” Wendy.

The reason I (try to) quit Facebook from time to time is twofold: (1) It’s a time suck – at work and outside of work. At work, … I don’t get work done, which is bad. And at home, I don’t get all these things done I say I want to do but don’t have time to do. Like, for instance,I have a kick ass idea for a children’s book series. (I know, who doesn’t.) But have I started? No, because … of Facebook, and fine ok, TV too; and (2) When I’m feeling bad about myself (um, like with this dumbass breakup that is still messing with my brain), everyone’s happy pictures from vacation and all those darn cute babies make me feel so … depressed. It’s called Facebook Depression.
