Weekend Open Thread

tumblr_ml1q4rH6E81rgjzlao1_500

This week I wore open toe shoes and walked around without a jacket — with bare arms, even! — so life is pretty good. I got so much sunshine earlier this week, I feel like my serotonin levels are sky-high. I don’t even mind that today is a rainy Friday. I didn’t even mind yesterday when Jackson’s babysitter had a doctor’s appointment and Drew had to work late and I was Jackson’s sole caregiver for 12 hours straight. It was exhausting though and I was ready for bed at 8 PM. Seriously, if I didn’t feel like such a lame-o, I would have crawled into bed and gone straight to sleep, but Drew had just gotten home and I wanted to spend at least a little time with him before I passed out, so we watched some of “Project Runway” (is anyone else watching this season? Who do you pick to win?) and I fell asleep halfway through.

As I said, it’s a rainy Friday, and I’m actually sort of happy about that. After I write a couple columns for next week, I’m going to start cleaning out my closet, which I know doesn’t sound exciting in the least, but I LOVE cleaning out closets. Especially when it’s rainy/kinda gross out and I don’t feel like I’m missing out by being indoors. The big challenge will be to get Drew to help me over the weekend since half of the closet (we have a big, walk-in closet) is his crap and he needs to be the one to go through it. I’ve already found a few items of clothing that I never wore, that still have tags on them, that I’m gonna post on eBay next week. Maybe I’ll make enough cash to pay for a meal or two on our weekend getaway in a few weeks.

Yes, we decided on a place! We’re going to this beautiful area in the Hudson Valley, just an hour and a half north of the city (we’ll take the train straight there), surrounded by lush gardens and a farm and one of those fancy farm-to-table restaurants where a pile of roasted brussels sprouts cost 12 bucks and the cocktails are all “infused with herbs.” Jackson’s babysitter will stay at our place for the weekend and watch him and Drew and I will have two whole days to ourselves. I’m so excited I can’t even stand it. We’re going to sleep til, I don’t know, like maybe 10. Or 11! And eat whenever we want and not pick up food off the floor after every single meal. We’re going to day drink and walk leisurely through gardens and leave our room without spending 15 minutes making sure the diaper bag is fully stocked and listening to a toddler whine and whine and whine because we aren’t moving quickly enough.

What else? I rode my bike three times this week and found that the third time, after I pumped some more air in the tires, was much more fun than the first two rides around the park when I thought I was going to pass out and die. I’m thinking about taking a pilates mat class — there’s one offered in my neighborhood on Thursday nights and it’s one of those pay-what-you-want deals, which is right in my budget, so I’m kind of excited about that. Also, I found a great tinted moisturizer I started using this week with lovely results. I’m going to tell you all about it in a couple weeks when I do up a list on my Spring Faves. I know you’re all on the edge of your seats. In the mean time, happy spring, and enjoy your weekend.

I for am actually am on the edge of my seat for a Spring Faves list. I’m loving the face lotion you recommended in Wendy’s Picks so far. Might have to try the BB cream you linked.

So happy you will be getting that weekend trip! I would’ve killed for something like that, but I never had a sitter, or a husband to go with! haha. We’re planning our Ireland trip and finalizing it hopefully this weekend, which is so exciting (the shrimp is tagging along for this trip). Isn’t it great having something to look forward to? Loving the weather earlier this week too and I feel like its kept me in a great mood today too.

I’m trying to get to Ireland soon too! I want to do a train ride and see as much coast as I can.
Of course I also have to find a way to get Irish men to talk to me without my boyfriend becoming suspicious that his accent can no longer stack up….

Good call on the accent. I hope I don’t lose interest in my accentless boyfriend while I’m there 🙂

I was just thinking about how Wendy should put together a list soon. What about a Mothers Day list as well? I never know what to get my mom. Like ever. One year we ALL got her flowers on mothers day. So she had like 4 bouquets. She was overwhelmed but also underwhelmed by the lack of physical gifts. Anyways we had a beautiful week in DC. Work has been really busy this week, but in the good way. My body is a little pooped/sore from all the walking I’ve been doing. This weekend I’m going shopping for new spring/summer clothes for my upcoming cruise! I also want to plant a few herbs in pots, and go to the movies with a friend. I love warm weather!

The weather here was gorgeous and beautiful and amazing and invigorating and all that jazz… for a few days. Then a tornado ripped through and now it’s back in the 40s. Spring fever, shming shmever.

It was warm here earlier in the week when I was working. Now that I’m unemployed, it’s 50 and gray with no sunshine to be found. But this is my last week in Ohio. One week from today, I’ll be moving into my new apartment! It’s so exciting but ridiculously stressful at the same time. It was a good idea to allow myself a full week to pack without having to go to work.

I hope you enjoy the weekend getaway Wendy! It sounds great.

Are those magnolias? We have a tree in the side yard & it’s my favorite 🙂

The weather was gorgeous enough here that I was able to take a walk during lunch almost every day. (Except today, which is fine because I feel like shit from my cold/sinus thing.) I also went to my Pilates class for the first time in months, so Wendy—I recommend trying it out! It really does tone your body pretty fast, in my experience (& if you aren’t a slacker like me who decides to stop going for months on end)

I feel asleep during PR but this season has been so disappointing to me, I can barely watch it. I don’t like the team dynamic and I hope they don’t do it again next season.

It was unfair that talented designers ended up on the losing team due to no fault of their own. I’ve barely watched it this season for the same reason you havent.

An hour and a half north of the city on the train… gotta be close to where I grew up in Hopewell! What town are you going to? Pawling? Beacon? Enjoy!

I’m planning on taking my new guy up there (but even farther north to New Paltz) to go hiking in a couple weeks since he’s from San Fran and has not left the city since he moved here back in September. Today is my last day at my job, but I’m not sad because tomorrow I fly to LA to visit my brother and some old friends for 10 days. I plan to come back 5x as freckly as I already am!

It has been raining all week in MIlwaukee. And it’s like 40F. But I’m going to San Francisco next week where it will be spring! I’m counting down the days. I haven’t taken real time off from work since I started this job, so I think it’ll do me some good.

It’s been almost a month since my roommate moved out, and I really don’t like living alone! I have no plans for tonight either, so that’s not helping. Though the one thing I never thought I would like would be hanging around naked/half naked. I never thought I would enjoy that, as I typically like to be “dressed” all the time, and not even in yoga pants.

Anyways, I love that it’s getting pretty hot where I am. I feel like my boyfriend and I go on the same types of dates all the time, so I want to get outdoors more, but he has a condition and can’t do anything too dangerous/physical/active so I’ll need to come up with some fun ideas.

Guys, I’m getting a handle on this mom thing and it feels good. Yesterday I worked out for 30 mins, went to the store with E by myself!, went for an hour walk, cooked dinner, tidied up and put him to bed early enough that my husband and I watched a movie. I know that those things don’t sound like anything more than regular life but to get that all done in one day is huge for me. I think it might have been the first movie I’ve seen since he was born. Oh, and he has pretty much full head control now and I just bought a jolly jumper for him and can’t wait to put him in it!

You are about to learn the cruel fate of parenthood — just when you think you’ve got a handle on things, the kid goes and changes the game — stops napping, starts teething, refuses to eat, gets a cold, sleep-regresses, learns to crawl, etc. — and you’re right back at square one, not knowing your head from your ass. I’ve been feeling like i have a pretty good control of things for the last two months or so, so I’m well-aware that the other shoe is going to drop any second now…

But, really, enjoy your week of feeling like you’ve got a handle on it! It’s well-deserved.

What a lovely, springtime photo, Wendy!! It’s been a cold and snowy week here. I also managed (by sheer force of will) to fend off a horrid cold until Sunday. I finally started to feel better today, which is good since we’re leaving super early tomorrow for a week in Mexico!! Yay for leaving freezing temperatures behind for sunshine and heat!!!

Usually at this time of year, Central Wisconsin is warming up and the new leaves are growing on the tree. At this time last year, my dad had planted his garden. Yesterday, there was an ice storm. Today, snow and gray, overcast skies. Looks more like a winter wonderland. I wish I was going to Mexico!

I’m so jealous of that picture! Here in the Midwest it has been the LONGEST WINTER EVER. We had a freak snow storm on Monday and we’re supposed to have one again this weekend. I’m more than ready for spring. This week was also NUTS and I’m very glad it’s the weekend. I was on the verge of a cold all week until it finally caught up with me today and I had to take a sick day from school. I’ve spent today watching Netflix and doing some organizing at home and I just woke up from a nap. We also only have only five weeks left of the school year which is exciting but terrifying when I look at all that I have to get done between now and then. I’m very excited for summer and can’t wait to have some time away.

I’m also job searching again. I’m not very happy where I’m at right now — I know that I love what I do and I love teaching, but I also know that I am really not a very good fit for this school. Plus I really miss my family and friends. I would likely take a new position at a new school should I get one, however I’m not sure what to do if I don’t have a job by the time we need to have our contracts signed at the end of May. I want a new job next year however I’m not sure if I’m willing to risk NOT having a job by not signing a contract. It would be a big hassle and a huge no-no to sign and back out of it. I know that in teaching especially, a gap on a resume doesn’t look all that good either. Ugh.

I admit, I definitely don’t know how it works for teachers, but wouldn’t it be okay to have a gap on your resume because you moved home to be with family? Or do you have any friends who could get you an interview in the school districts in where you want to be?

Unfortunately I teach music so jobs are very scarce, especially closer to home. With budget cuts, there is a LOT of competition for the jobs that are out there and I’m a fairly inexperienced teacher because I’m just finishing up my first year. I moved 500 miles from family and friends for this job ultimately to be closer to my ex boyfriend, and I realized that when we broke up. But I have a full time job with good benefits and some (mostly) awesome peers to work with…ugh, real life sucks sometimes.

I’m intrigued by your tinted moisturizer recommendation. I’ve been thinking that I need something to even out my skin a little, but I hate foundation, and I also am pale and need something to protect my skin from the sun. So I might have to check that out!

I spent the day calling and emailing about potential apartments ahead of my move to Iowa in August (college town, so you have to lease now). Apparently most of the apartments are already taken, and then I had scheduled a showing of one until I found out that the landlord (who I’d contacted) was charged with peeping at women in the showers of his apartments — including the very one that I was going to check out. Uhhh. So I canceled that appointment. But hopefully by this time next week I’ll have an apartment and/or roommate set up, specifically without any peeping toms.

I’m the same – hate foundation (haven’t worn it since I was a teenager in the early 90s), but started feeling like my complexion needed a little evening out, plus I needed sun protection too. I definitely recommend this tinted moisturizer for all of the above!

YOU GUYS. I AM LOSING MY MIND HERE. So I passed my derby skills test (yay!!!) and just in time – there were only three draft spots (out of four) left for the season. But they’ve decided they won’t draft till ALL FOUR spots are filled. One more girl passed the same night as I did (I think that maybe means she’s my derby wife?), but there’s one more spot. The game is NEXT SATURDAY. I don’t know what that means – will we sub in for missing players? One team has two girls out with injuries (one is my transplant friend whom I adore but still whines some – tore her MCL), and I feel like they’re going to need a few more warm bodies on the track (not that I can do much more than that). But NO ONE IS TELLING ME A DAMN THING. I’m getting impatient – I’m ready to kick some ass, y’all!

In other news, I had a really good audition turnout for my middle school contest show. I have an extremely kick ass cast of kids that are both talented and fun, so I’m excited to get down to business on Monday! I’m also stoked because my three leads are all 7th graders, so they have one more year in middle school, which means if I’m teaching middle school theatre again next year, I can pick my show based on their capabilities. I also had the luxury of turning kids away based on grades (rules are that you have to be passing everything to compete), and I didn’t have that last year.

You guys, it’s SNOWING. And it has been snowing since last night. We’re talking a freak April blizzard here. We have close to 18 inches and it’s blowing like the dickens out there. And I have a SNOW DAY TOMORROW! I’m excited, despite the fact that I will be at school and getting my work done anyway…but without the distraction of kids or other teachers! It’s just ridiculous. I’ve been ready for spring since January and here we have a BLIZZARD in APRIL. Oh, and I’m not looking forward to digging my car out tomorrow. To avoid it I may just avoid it and trudge around town in my winter parka, boots, and five layers of sweats. We’ll see what the day brings.
