Weekend Open Thread

Happy first day of summer, everyone! I mistakenly thought that today was the summer solstice — it was actually last night — so I missed that, but first day of summer? I’m on it. I may even try my hand at making mojitos tonight. Or maybe we’ll just go out for them. There’s a Cuban restaurant two blocks away that I took Jackson to for lunch last week on one of those days where I was hot and bothered and really couldn’t summon the energy to prepare meals for us and clean up, so I took my chances with taking him to a restaurant, which was risky considering the boy doesn’t sit still for more than a few seconds at a time and has been known to throw his food on the floor from time to time (thankfully that is happening much less often these days). Anyway, it went better than I could have hoped for, due in large part to the open-air nature of the place and the location, which is right off a big intersection. I faced the high chair toward the street and Jackson happily watched the traffic go by for 20 minutes while I ate and fed him in peace. Friday evening, all three of us went for dinner and again, it went really well and Drew and I were even able to enjoy a couple mojitos to kick off the weekend. I think we’re going to try making it a family Friday night tradition.

Anyway, I’m posting this rendition of Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong not only because today is the first day of summer, but also because in the last two weeks, Jackson has become a big Ella and Louis fan. Every day, he points to the speakers and says, “Ella! Ella! Louis!” It’s funny because we don’t play them that much, but for whatever reason, they’re what has stuck, at least for the time being.

Happy summer everyone! Have a great weekend. And enjoy the big DW meetups in Chicago and DC!! Send photos!

Who has good plans this weekend? I have no friends around to hang with this weekend. Kind of sad. Any ideas of what I can do on my own that would put me around people but not be totally awkward?

I paint pottery by myself and that’s nice. Or go to the movies by yourself. Or go shopping (I actually prefer to shop alone, I’m more purposeful and get stuff done quickly).

I prefer shopping by myself, too! I also don’t mind going to movies alone, either, and sometimes even prefer it. I personally don’t mind doing things alone that most people would probably do with another person — except maybe going to a bar alone, I’ve never done that — but maybe I’m just kind of a loser-loner? Haha. I dunno.

My friend that goes to a bar alone usually brings a book (she does it before like 8pm). I’ll go into bars alone if I have some time to kill while waiting for something.

Yeah, same here—the only times I’ve gone to a bar alone was when I was visiting my friend up near his town, & I’d be waiting for him to get off work. It was kind of fun because the bartenders knew me.

I go out to eat/the be alone. My husbands been away for 3 weeks and I’ve gone out…maybe 6 times alone? I usually go earlier- diner at like 6 and like bar embarrassing early at like 3. Sometimes I bring a book or my iPad. Sometimes I just sit there and relax

I’m also very excited that it’s finally really summer… But at the same time I’m bummed because it’s all downhill from here, at least until December. I’m usually such a look on the bright side type of person, but all I can think of is that the days start getting shorter already, and it’s going to be the fall before I know it 🙁

        We drink wine!

Sometimes we do pairings (each person brings a wine and a dish to pair it with), sometimes we just drink and hang out. Tonight our host is putting together a presentation on “Sleeper Wines”- Wines made with lesser known grape varieties. He’s buying all the wines, and making all the foods to go with them, but typically the host picks a theme and then each person/couple brings a bottle of wine and food dish to share.

My Wine club is made up of my parents, very close family friends and their kids/spouses who are my age, and then a few friends of friends. We try to meet once a month, and then in the Spring we all go on a “Wine Tour” together. It’s pretty rad. You guys should all start your own!

We’re getting a puppy tonight! We were going to wait for a while, but we went to the shelter yesterday just to look (Bad idea, never do that!) and fell in love with one of the adorable dachshund puppies. So, we’re going tonight to pick her up! I’ll probably post a picture tonight or tomorrow so y’all can see how adorable she is! And hopefully Fiona will be okay with her. I’m not expecting her to love the new puppy right away, but I’m hoping she just doesn’t care, like when my sister’s kitten came to visit. Fingers crossed! Any advice y’all have about potty training or just any general owning a puppy advice is welcome! I’ve googled every question I can think of, but extra input never hurts! 🙂 And thanks to everyone (again) who commented on my forum post! It really made me feel more comfortable with introducing a new pet to Fiona.

Hey so I have a mini-dachshund. If I remember correctly you are home a lot so you should be able to let her out, but they can be a pain to potty train (very very stubborn personalities and small bladders). I use pee-pads around the house for her when I’m not home. You can start her out by lining your entire kitchen (or another enclosed space) with puppy pee pads. Then slowly take them away one by one as she gets the hang of things. Or are you going to crate train her? Mine never took to the crate but it’s a good method.

Be very careful with their backs (you probably know that), but since they are prone to back problems at 4-7 you should get pet insurance now since surgery is around 4-6 thousand dollars and since she’s from a shelter you don’t know if her parents had back problems or not. Pet insurance is cheapest when you first get the dog. I never taught my dog how to go down stairs so she won’t injure her back, and I carry her up/down most sets of stairs.

Dachshunds are a harder breed to train because they are independent and have strong personalities, so I would suggest training classes with a lot of practice at home. When they set their minds to something you won’t be able to distract them so try to catch any bad habits early on. Oh, and socialize the crap out of her! Take her everywhere you go that you can take a dog. Go to the pet store a lot to run into other dogs, go to places with lots of people, go to places with children, let her see people of all shapes/sizes/races, and introduce her to a lot of noises like the vaccuum, dryer, hair dryer, etc… so she isn’t scared of these things when she’s older.

Hmm, I’ve always thought if I could choose a breed, it’d be yours, but sounds like they are a little tough…almost like terriers. I had one of those and remember it being hard to train, etc.

        kerrycontrary June 21, 2013, 5:06 pm

Yeh I think it’s just because they are bred to hunt without people right beside them, so they can make independent decisions. Plus they needed that stubborn nature to dig out animals from their dens so they need a “keep at it” attitude. That being said, dachshunds are incredibly cute and have really big personalities and I love mine. They just aren’t an “easy” breed.

Thanks! I’ve had 3 dachshunds growing up, (at separate times, not all at once haha) so I know about their back problems and how stubborn they can be! But thanks! I’m home all day (other than running occasional errands) so I’m hoping that will help alot with her training. The biggest thing I’m a little worried about is training her to leave Fiona alone. Of course, she may not even want anything to do with Fiona, but I won’t know that until she gets here. I am a little worried about the stubbornness when it comes to potty training, but since I’m home to take her out frequently I’m hoping it won’t be a huge problem.

        kerrycontrary June 21, 2013, 5:10 pm

Yup if you are home a lot you should be fine. Just see how Fiona reacts. She might be more gentle because she’s a puppy (I think they can “tell”). Or the puppy will just learn that it’s beta and Fiona is Alpha and they will understand their places.

I don’t think anyone’s on this late, but I just wanted to say that things are okay so far. We named her Elinore (after the Beatles song) and are calling her Ella for short. She’s adorable and very playful. Fiona is doing okay with it, she’s mostly just been napping on the bed. She hasn’t hissed or growled, and she even ate a LITTLE bit of food within eyesight of Ella. But then she stopped eating and went to the bed. But hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day. And at least she’s not hiding or being aggressive. Ella also has a pretty bad case of fleas. Fiona is allergic, but she should be fine because we’ve been keeping up with her flea meds. I’m not entirely sure if there’s a puppy safe flea medicine, but we’re going to a pet store tomorrow and I’m sure someone there can help. If not, I’ll call the vet on Monday. The backs of Ella’s ears are a little messed up because of the fleas, but they told us to put neosporin on it at night and it should clear up soon.

It depends on the shelter. The one I used to volunteer at would take an animal back within 30 days, but I don’t know if that’s typical. And we didn’t advertise it, so people wouldn’t think of taking an animal home for a “trial period”

I’m going to my parents’ house this weekend for a cousin’s bridal shower and a family reunion. We’re bringing our cat and two kittens, and all five of us are going to have to stay in my childhood bedroom. The kittens have never left home, and in fact, they literally only noticed that there was a world outside our apartment yesterday. They’ll be meeting a big scary dog who gets overly excited and jumps on everybody as well as probably 50 people. The one time we took Jane (momma cat) down to visit, she hissed and growled the entire time even when she had a whole section of the house blocked off. It’s going to be INTENSE.

I went to an end of the world party at the science museum in December. Probably same sort of thing- booze and music at the museum. It was way cool. Bring back stories!

I am currently on a bus to DC to see college friends. I definitely didn’t know a meetup was happening. Anyway, catching the bus was a shit show. There were five different bus lines convening on this one corner, with multiple times and destinations. My bus was late, and it took us literally an hour to get out of the city and into NJ. Crazy.

Anyway, this is one of my bucket list items before moving to the Midwest and no longer being close enough to hop a bus to see my friends. Speaking of, I finally was able to register for classes this week and am officially a grad student, or at least that’s what my program coordinator told me!

Higher education/student affairs. It exciting to me because it’s so different from what I’ve been doing since college.

This weekend I’m finishing my grad school application. I haven’t told anyone about it except my husband (and now all of DW) because I have a bachelors in Aerospace Engineering and control the space station and all that jazz… but I want to get a masters in English and maybe not be an engineer forever.
I told one friend I was thinking about doing it and she was all “Why on earth would you do that?!” Yeah engineers really hate grammar. Reading their emails makes me want to jump out a window sometimes.

But my husband is supportive… and I don’t want anyone else to kill my joy. I’ll tell them, after I’ve gotten in. If I get in. Eek!

        Hah, that question again?
I don’t really no. I really like to write. And I have plenty of opinions to write about. My husband thinks we could be a science fiction writing couple, because he has a bunch of ideas for stories but doesn’t really know how to write.
I have been thinking to get ordained by the Universal Life church (its basically a sort-of-fake internet church where anyone can get ordained online and then legally perform weddings… sounds shady but I guess they won a court case about it and it falls under the first amendment that the government cant decide they’re a fake church) and then become a wedding ceremony writer/officiant.
Or maybe I’ll become a technical writer next. Or write for Popular Science magazine. Or lobby the government to fund NASA better.
Anyways I know you don’t have to have a degree to do any of those things, but I haven’t taken an English class since high school and I feel like I need to know more English and also more about the process to really be good at it.

I had a pretty good day today! I got promoted to BFF in my most important women’s meetup group (yay!), got carded at the liquor store (fifth time in 2013 haha), met safely for a date with a stranger from the Internet, did my burpees, and worked a lot. It has really been a pretty nice day 🙂

I hope that when you guys have the meetup in Chicago, you will take a group photo and send it to Wendy and let her post it at DW!

i have such a busy month planned, AGAIN. jake’s mom and step dad are here right now, and yesterday we played tourist and went to the cubs game, which had a 3 hour rain delay. so lame. as if baseball games arent long enough… today we are just hanging out and jake is making pulled pork. he actually has to work tonight, because his job sucks balls, so i have to figure out what to do with his mom and dad tonight. a movie, maybe? what would you do if you had your boyfriends mother who you dont know terribly well and her husband in town?

they leave on sunday, then the picnic (i have no idea what to bring!!! ahhh!!), then i leave for PA on business mon-thurs, then i have to make this big 4th of july dessert im making, take it to work and freeze it, then the week of the 4th we have one of my PA work people coming to my plant and working with us, and apparently our director will be there too, then my mom and sister arrives on tuesday, then we have plans with people tuesday night, weds night, and then thursday we are going up to my uncle’s lakehouse. then we get back from that, i have my very first business meeting with a local grocery store chain, then back to york weds-fri.

i dont know when i am going to sleep.

but anyway, i have to brag again because this is so huge- JAKE GOT A NEW JOB AND ITS AMAZING!! so the aforementioned shitty job that is making him work one of the 3 days his mom is here who he hasnt seen in almost 2 years is GONE! his new job is regular people hours, making more money, and its salaried so there wont be anymore cutting his hours that has been the last.. oh, 6 months or so. im SO HAPPY. oh and also, he emailed in his two weeks right after he accepted the job offer, and if it all goes according to plan, he will be able to come to the lakehouse too! so basically this is amazing.

but for real what do you guys want for the picnic? or what would you want if you hypothetically were going to a picnic? i do much better when i just get instructions. lol. ill go ask in the forum.

I really wish I did not live in the middle of nowhere sometimes. A Cuban restaurant sounds amazing.

I have entered the world of attending kids’ birthday parties. I also have to do some bills for work for our federal cases. Blergh.

Last night I went to dinner for a friend who just got divorced (I got to call her and tell her the decree was issued!), and I locked my keys in my car. Another person’s husband help me get my keys out. I am going to buy him a nice microbrew/craft beer. Any recommendations?

Where do you live? A couple larger ones that are usually loved are New Belgium, Lagunitas, and Dogfish Head. Those breweries are spread out around the country, so there’s a good chance you’d be able to find something from one of them.

Where do you live is a big factor but I second New Belgium, Lagunitas, and Dogfish Head. Ballist Point is also great (the Sculpin IPA). Here is a good list to work from-

I haven’t been able to post often or even read DW and I miss you guys.

I am really loving Colorado! I can’t believe how beautiful this town is and I’m still freaked out by how nice the people are. I get lonely for my friends back home alot but my roommates have been keeping me company so that’s nice.
I think we need a dear Wendy meet up here 🙂

Yay everyone, busy weekend! SO and I used our Valentine’s Day Groupon (hehe, so late) for a wine tasting with nom-noms and it was DELICIOUS. All the wine was fruit wine, and really sweet but no sulfites so no headaches! And so we ended up with a Raspberry and a sparkling Cherry wine. Then we were drunk and got pizza. Today I went shopping, got 2 batches of strawberries (preserves and pickles) ready, and hopefully have some pickled radishes prepped to all can tomorrow. Tonight I am going out with my college roommate who I haven’t seen in like 6 months.

And I got crepes with my sister! Yay. Best weekend ever. Except now all my $$ are going to disappear…

Every time I see goats I think of you. My neighbor and I are contemplating buying goats and putting them in dog costumes so we can have goats in city limits. I live in Montana, for pete’s sake. Schools are still, by law, required to have hitching posts out front for horses. Blergh. But I can’t keep a goat or a piggie in my backyard 🙁
