Weekend Open Thread

For those of you who wondered how to make the Baileys Martinis I mentioned in last weekend’s open thread, wonder no more! Here’s a handy how-to video to get you going. Next, I shall show you how to make my other holiday favorite — vodka gimlets. Hmm, vodka. (Here’s a link to my fave martini glasses — durable, simple, inexpensive, and best of all, BIG!).

Speaking of holiday drinking, this is the big weekend for it. Saturday night we have two holidays parties we’re hitting up, which for a couple of middle-aged parents like us is a Big Night Out. I think we may even stay out past midnight. Maybe even later! I got a new dress. One of the parties has a theme this year and the theme is “silver,” so naturally, I had to order three silver dresses during the Cyber Monday sales in hopes that at least one of them would look decent on me. One was too big, one was too small (despite being the same size) and sort of made me look like a sad mother-of-the-bride who wishes she was still the bride, and the third one, luckily, was just right. I’m so excited to wear it! I’m gonna wear it with shimmery hose and silver heels and my vintage white faux fur coat, naturally.

Sunday morning we have a 2-year-old birthday party, which makes three in four weeks and we have one more to go to next weekend and then birthday season is over… at least for six months. Side note: the thing about parenthood that no one tells you and you don’t really know until you’re in it is that for every child you have, there will be six months of the year that you are at a birthday party nearly every weekend. The parties will start three months before your child’s birthday and go until three months after. I imagine that once your child starts school and has a wider social circle, the parties will be year-round. You would think this might be a terrible thing — to sacrifice so many weekends to kid parties, but the reality is you’ll be sort of grateful because you need SOMETHING to keep your toddler entertained anyway and if you can be around other adults at the same time and maybe even some alcoholic beverages, then, hey, it’s better than freezing or sweating your balls off (depending on the season) at the neighborhood playground for the fiftieth time that week. Anyway, we have this 2-year-old birthday party the morning after our Big Night Out and I’m thinking the only thing that will get us through is the hope of mimosas for the parents while the kids eat cake and act like little lunatics.

Also! Just a head’s up, the site will be down for maintenance for a short bit on Monday morning. There was a WordPress upgrade yesterday that has caused a few issues that you’ve probably noticed today, so Lindsey, my IT guru, will be working on those on Monday as well as re-sizing the site in Chrome browser windows, which some of you requested. All of this costs big bucks, so please help support the site by visiting my holiday gift guides and making some purchases through my affiliate links! Thanks, y’all, and happy holidays!

Your holiday parties sound swanky! I love the look of fur coats but don’t like the idea of fur so yay faux fur! I actually probably wouldn’t feel guilty about wearing an old fur coat because then you are re-using something instead of throwing it away. And they’re hella warm. But I wouldn’t buy fur on my own.

This is the first weekend I’m spending at my apartment in like 2 months, I’m so excited! I’m going to have a choregasm cleaning and finish all my christmas shopping and walk a lot with my dog. I’m really excited for the holidays because my siblings and their babies will be home and we’re going to get family pictures taken. My fiance and I get to see both sides of the family and even though its a lot of traveling it will be worth it. I love christmas!

Yay, Tito’s is from Austin! Although the last time I tried to buy Tito’s, the liquor store guy was like “noo, you don’t want Tito’s!” and he gave me Dripping Springs vodka instead (another Texas vodka). He wasn’t Russian, though.

That was such a cute video, Wendy. You’ve inspired me to make Bailey’s martini’s with my homemade fat-free Bailey’s this weekend!

I think Tito’s is pretty awesome, but I heard last night from a bartender that they were polluting Austin somehow pretty badly, so that might be why. (Didn’t stop me from buying some today, though. It’s good shit!)

Oh god, Monday morning is going to be the worst! How can I face the world alone?

I’m driving all the way across the state tonight to visit my best friend for her birthday. I’m also meeting her new boyfriend for the first time, and I’m really hoping he’s normal because they’ve all been weirdos in the past. It should be fun though!

Cute video, Wendy. I need pajama pants. The only “pants” I have are boxers and they’re my ex’s. Now I don’t wear them for any creepy reasons. I wear them because he left them once and they are super thin and soft just like how I like em so I kept them. He knows.

You know what drives me nuts? How parents tend to only invite other parents to their kid’s birthday. I mean, I get that it’s a party for the kid with his friends who are kids but come on when they’re that young I think a parent’s childless friend should get an invite too! Basically I want invited to kids’ parties.

Ugh, I just got yelled at. It was kind of a misunderstanding. But I had to figure out what the hell was going on during the yelling, and then I had to very loudly back explain my point and clear up the misunderstanding, so we both were yelling at one point, but now it’s figured out, and all is fine.

    I don’t like yelling!

Now I need a drink. I am SOOOOOO not cut out for confrontation. It’s odd that I’m a lawyer, it really really really really really is.

This video made me so happy. Wendy, you are adorable. Also, yes to Tito’s!!! I’m a vodka snob and it’s my favorite. And I had a moment of “I’m going to go home and drink ALLLLL the martinis!!!” And then I remembered it’s musical weekend, and I have to be back at school at 6:00 and can’t drink because kids. I may go have one of the martinis, though.

Y’all, our production of Alice in Wonderland is so fucking cute. I’m really quite proud of it – 6’5″ gay kid as Queen of Hearts, the set is kind of badass if I say so myself, and nothing else, it’s DONE. Oh sweet jeebus, I am so ready to have nights off and go to derby practice three times a week like a normal person (okay, not normal, but still…).

My holiday parties are far less fancy than yours, Wendy – I think the theme of all of mine are “drunky drunk drunk.” I’m okay with that – we have derby ball a few weeks after Christmas, and we get to get dressed up in slinky stuff that we can’t normally wear because we’re too covered in bruises. Oh, and TOTALLY off-topic, at one of the practices I missed, one of my injured teammates decided to film practice in slow-mo (new iPhone has that feature). Initially I think it was supposed to be for training purposes because we tend to move so fast it’s hard not to miss things, and it works as intended – except I’m too busy laughing my ass off to really take in what’s happening. Everyone sounds like dinosaurs, and it’s awesome.

I think I’m a bit obsessed with my cat. I’m planning on making a “Meowy Christmas” card so I spent an hour today trying to get a good picture of her with the reindeer antlers I bought her. 🙂

I’m hanging out with my best friend tonight. Pizza, beer, movies, and crocheting/knitting. 🙂 Tomorrow I’m headed up to see Navy Guy, and planning give him a kissing lesson or two (lesson one will be for him to slooow down and enjoy). Then on Sunday I’m headed to my parents’ house to bake Christmas cookies with my mom.

I also found out today that my co teacher (who I’ve posted about before) will likely be let go within the next few days due to neglecting her duties. I had a sub yesterday due to a concert at another school and she took full advantage of that and basically did what she wanted instead of following the schedule that has been in place since October. That was the last straw. My sub emailed me this morning and said that the co teacher did whatever the hell she wanted AND refused to go find students that weren’t in class yet because it “isn’t her job”. Soooo there were a handful of 10 year olds wandering with no teacher supervision for 20 minutes…

And the co teacher officially will be fired — my supervisor called me last night to let me know. Except for the fact that she maaaay be teaching next week? And she won’t know that she’s being let go…but I will…awkward. Merry Christmas to me!!

I want a Bailey’s martini! Alas, I’m still working. Which is both why I would like a martini and why I can’t have one just yet.

In other news, I’m bringing my boyfriend to my family Christmas party next Saturday. I’m afraid that their Long Island accents and their we-hug-everyone-no-matter-how-few-minutes-we’ve-known-you attitude will be all in his face and scare him away! He told me to stop worrying about these things, but do you think I can do that? No I cannot. I keep having terror flashes of my aunt Diane cornering him and saying things like, “Whaddya do again? You’re a doctah? Look at this mole on my chin.” Ahhhh!! I’m scaring myself!

Tonight is my work Christmas party. It’s a very boozy event, which I am really looking forward to. Unfortunately, we’re supposed to get like 8 inches of snow or something, so I’m not really sure how that’s going to work out, since the party is in the city, and we’re about a half hour away from there (with no traffic). We were thinking of taking the train, but afraid of getting stranded if the trains stop running. I’m going to check with a friend of mine in the city and see if we can crash with her if we get stuck. Should be fun!!

The ones on that site are SUPER CUTE! I have a couple pairs of the Victoria’s Secret thermal style ones. Not onesies, but two-piece, with a long sleeve top and ankle-cuff pants. I like them a lot. You don’t even have to take them off to go outside if you have a long coat and some boots to throw on. However, every time I put them on at night I have to hear “Oh, you have your JAMMIES on! Jammies jammies jammies!” Whatever, they’re the best. Everyone should have some jammies.

Aw Wendy, I just watched the video & you are adorable. “Jackson calls these my bubble pants. Because he thinks these are bubbles. Which is fine.” <— I don't know why, but that part made me crack up.

Ahhh my weekend is going to be annoying. Fabello is helping our friends move from an apartment into a house right now, & I am trying to clean/get all the of Christmas presents I bought so far wrapped up (gift bag'd). Then we are supposed to go to a family party of his at 5? AND THEN we each have separate parties to attend, & I'm not quite sure how well that's going to work, because it's supposed to snow all day, & I feel like it'll be pretty bad by nighttime. I'm also kind of annoyed that he made plans, even though I told him I'm going to a party tonight so it made sense for him to make other plans. It's just that I like knowing I can bail on my social obligations at the last minute, & still know that he's available to hang out with me? Which is super selfish, haa (I told him I was annoyed too, & he fake-smacked me & was like, "guess if you bail on your party, you'll have to come to mine! Muahaha!")

So many parties!!! I don’t understand… is this what grown ups do in the real world? It sounds fun. I can’t wait to be a grown up and go to Christmas parties, because this time of year just fills me with dread because for the last 6 years of my life it has been finals week. Just like it is now!

I am studying a whole bunch and trying not to get super cranky at anyone that interacts with me. I’m feeling very woe is me, even though my life is NOT bad at all. I’m sitting here eating Gardettos and drinking a coconut latte and looking at radiographs. It could be worse. But will. Studying is so paralyzing because I can’t focus when I study but I can’t do anything else without worrying about not studying.

We got the plans back on our house, and we just had to change a few things and then it should be perfect and we can *finally* get started on throwing all of Benjamin’s money at people to make it look like the picture. And I am super serious about getting a masonry stove which is going to cost like a whole bunch. But then we wouldn’t have to pay for heat. So I think it would be worth it, and this is totally the time to do it because we are basically working from the ground up. And I’m all enthusiastic/super worried bopping back and forth and Benjamin is so CHILL about the whole thing that it is borderline annoying. Like, why can’t you either be SO EXCITED about getting this fancy woodstove or SO WORRIED about how we would pay for it? I send him like 10 links a day about house stuff. And he reads them. And then is just like, “Well, I think this…” and then is all good and doesn’t need to talk about it anymore. And I want to talk about it forever and over and over again because what if we come up with a good idea by thinking and thinking and thinking about it.

That was unexpected rant. Back to the radiographs!!
