Weekend Open Thread

Happy Friday! I had a pretty good week, did you? I especially enjoyed reading all the lurker introductions the other day. I read every single one and was so impressed with what an accomplished and eclectic readership we have. I wish all you lurkers commented a little more. Please do if you feel compelled to! We like you.

I’m so excited for this weekend because Drew and I are going away! Just the two of us! Drew took Monday off from work and on Sunday morning we’re taking a train 90 minutes north of Manhattan to an inn we stayed at back in May, and we spend one night there and come back Monday evening. There’s a farm-to-table restaurant across the street (the farm is on the same property as the inn) and a spa where we’re going to hang out in steam rooms and hot tubs like we’re on a reality TV date. I didn’t realize when we made the reservations that the Super Bowl in on Sunday, so… sorry/not sorry to Drew that, instead of eating wings and watching the game, he’s going to be at a spa with me. But he is a sport! When I realized the conflict and asked if he wanted to change our reservations, he was all, “I don’t care about those teams.” He saves all his love for the Yankees.

What else? Oh, I got the cutest thank you letters from the fifth grade class in North Carolina that we sent books to for Christmas. Next week, I’ll share some of the best ones with you. They’re adorable.

Today is my younger sister’s (golden) birthday. She’s 31. Which means I’m getting old because we are so far apart in age that Allison was only 11 when I left home for college. And now she’s well into her 30s. Happy birthday, Allie!

And happy weekend to all of you!

Have fun Wendy! You deserve an awesome night away with Drew! I’m SO excited for this weekend. Tomorrow I’m going to a gun show with my friend…I’ve never been, am a little terrified, but super curious! Then I’m going to brunch (yum) then I’M DYING MY HAIR! I’m so excited. I’m getting plum colored hair. It’s going to be great. Then Sunday=Superbowl YAY! But before that, I’m helping out with WordSmith…a spelling/writing/English related competition for high schoolers and middle schoolers at the university that I’m going to school at. I’m never this social. I’m slightly uncomfortable with it, but excited.

Oh, I feel you on the being social. I’ve got a birthday party for my niece, dinner, and an evening of bar hopping, followed by cards at my house, all on Saturday. All of which I’m very excited about. But it’s a lot.

Luckily, I’m not planning on going to any Super Bowl parties on Sunday, so I can stay at home and be safe in my little bubble.

Yay, that sounds like such a fun weekend! I work all weekend, so no fun for me (though I will get off in time to watch the game). But, Monday is the bf’s birthday, and he took off work, so we’re going to do something fun during the day. And then he doesn’t know it yet but I’m taking him to the best restaurant ever (also farm to table) for dinner. Which lets be real, is as much a present for me as it is for him, but whatever. So I’m really looking forward to that. And by monday night we should even be able to order a bottle of wine with dinner because I’ll finally be off the two medications I’m on that don’t play well with others (i.e. booze).

I just canceled on the cat medical team. I feel so bad! Like I actually feel bad and then I also feel bad for canceling. But I can’t be sick doing medical stuff for cats.

Alice, what are the rules of that?

Uhm… your most likely viral infection wouldn’t really transfer over to them (IMHO, now that I know a veterinary extraordinaire is watching this I’m like OMG… what if I am saying something so stupid….). HOWEVER, you need to be on your game when caring for animals so if you don’t feel sharp I think that you did the right thing. Even for simple medical tasks you really need to be bright and alert so you don’t accidentally hurt yourself/others.

Is that what you meant by rules, haha?

Ha, yes, that’s what I meant. I assumed I can’t give the cats anything -and they can’t give me anything- but I didn’t actually know.

Also yes I was envisioning try to give a shot and sneezing. Not good.

I have the worst case of the winter blues this week 🙁 I just want to crawl into a hole and do nothing. I was doing fine all winter until this past week. I have like no motivation at work this past week which is bad. At least I got out for a walk today at lunchtime (and get georgetown cupcakes…). Tonight we’re getting indian food, tomorrow morning I’m going for a 3-mile fast walk cause it’s finally *mild*, and I’m getting my hair cut. So I hope that’s enough to cheer me up.

Yes to the exercising= better mood. I haven’t gone for a run in a week (constant rain + realtor appts) and today I was just feeling angry and I know the only way to get it out of my system is to exercise. We went for a walk but tomorrow I’m definitely getting out for a run.

I read a blog post about the January Gloom the other day, and the gist of it was “January is January, wherever you are”. And basically January freaking sucks. So, embrace how awful it is for the rest of the day. The tomorrow, wake up and be thankful that it’s February. That teeny short little month standing between us and spring!!!

Also, it’s still light at 5:30. Things are going in the right direction!

Peeps, my daughter was invited to a last-minute sleepover, but my boyfriend just had a tooth extracted yesterday, so we can’t go do anything. Lame! I mean, I know this is a total non-problem, but child care is pretty hard to come by and I’m so bummed we can’t take advantage. He can’t eat solid foods yet, so we can’t even go out to eat. Still, I’m glad for the quiet time and the fact that my daughter gets to have fun with her friend.

Also, I signed up for an 8k today. It’s on March 1st and the longest I’ve run so far is 3.5 miles, so I’m nervous I won’t be ready in time! My asthma is really acting up, but I’m going to try to run 4 miles tomorrow. If I can breathe, that is.

Well I’m going out for drinks with some coworkers tonight. It might be the last time I hang out with them as an employee of our company, since I’m leeaavvvingg!! yayyyy
And then after that, I’m supposed to meet up for a date with the guy I’ve been dating. I need to think of a good nickname for him. Maybe I should call him Mr. Nurse since he’s a nurse. Well, that was unimaginative.
Anyway, hopefully I’m not tipsy when I meet up with him. He’s not a drinker and I don’t want to scare him away. I’m just afraid my coworkers might buy me shots since I quit. Haha

First, thanks to everyone who responded to my post in the Forums. I woke up feeling much more calm today.

Second, Mr. Pantalones and I are having our usual Friday date at the Wholefoods buffet, and then I’m going to try oil cleansing my face tonight with avocado oil (has anyone tried oil cleansing before?). My skin is going insane this winter and it’s driving me nuts. Tomorrow, we’re going to vegan wing bowl at a bar in the city, and then dinner and a movie with friends on Sunday. In between, getting our tax stuff prepped. Whoop.

I’ve oil-cleansed exclusively for about 4 years now. I use a combo of castor oil & some other carrier oil, currently sunflower I believe. I absolutely love it! It’s like a miracle just how ‘cleansed’ my skin feels after, and bright and clean looking! I always need to moisturize after and cycle through avocado oil (the richest to my skin) jojoba and rapeseed oils. Good luck and give it time (at least a month) if you’re trying to address skin issues. Also if you’re addressing skin issues take a look at your diet – I realized cystic acne is triggered when I eat certain things – and to me it makes sense that cystic acne is an internal trigger, rather than those surface zits that you can get from clogging makeup, etc.

Oh yay, I’m happy to hear you love it. I actually am psyched to start and ended up getting avocado and grapeseed oils. I read that castor can be drying and my issue is that my face is already super dry and feels like sandpaper. I tried it for the first time last night! The websites I read talked about placing a hot washcloth over your face for a few minutes after you massage the oil on your face, but I think that may be a bit too harsh for my skin right now. Thanks for the advice!

I AM SO EXCITED FOR TOMORROW!!!

My best friend (the one with the 2 kids I’m obsessed with) is leaving the girls with her husband, and she’s going to come over! I live close to where we went to college, so we’re going there for dinner, then we’re going to our favorite college dive bar, then we’re going to come home, drink wine and look at pictures from college! And I had my husband take some risque pics of me (so I can look back when I’m 60 and think “yeah, I was hot!”), and I made a book out of them, so I’m going to show her that, too! And she’s going to sleep over and it’s just going to be awesome! YAY!

On a positive note, I met with a Nurse Midwife this morning and she said we’re a go to start babymaking as soon as we decide we want to. And then she wrote my pill script for a year. Thank goodness. I’m half terrified of the baby making, and half can’t wait. It’s crazy to me how little is “done” in preparation.

Basically it’s a registered nurse who is also a midwife. The lady I saw is a nurse practitioner and midwife, so she can write presciptions and do more doctor stuff, but is also a trained midwife. I like the combo a lot. It was at a birth center too, rather than a doctors office, and it was soooo relaxed. I’d love to have a baby in that environment.

        Edit-“Certified Nurse Midwives

(CNM) provide maternity care in the hospital and/or birth center setting. A CNM has obtained a Masters in Nursing as part of the academic and clinical requirements to become a CNM. Upon graduation a CNM is most often hired by OB/GYN practices, function under physician protocol, have prescription writing privileges and can provide well-woman care. A CNM may also provide collaborative care for women deemed “high risk” with physician consult and back up.

Oh okay. That is pretty much what a midwife is here in Canada although they don’t work under doctors, they are considered equal to doctors here. They are also the only people qualified to attend home births. We don’t have a birth centre in my city, I would have loved that. I don’t know about the after birth care CNM’s have but here you continue to see your midwife for the first 6 weeks, mine came to my house everyday for the first week and a half and then I had weekly appts at her office. It was the best thing I could of had. She did everything from help me learn to breastfeed to propping up my swing with blankets so that it was safe for E. I had so many questions and knowing that she would be back to answer them the next day was really comforting in my hormonal state.

The more I learn about birth centers and midwifery, the more I think it’s awesome. There’s a PBS documentary (pretty old at this point) called Born in the USA that compares and contrasts birth center births with midwives and hospital births. If you can find it, you should watch it. I don’t want kids, but if I had a baby, I’d definitely go the midwife/birth center route…IF I could…it’s not an option if you’re high risk.

(But I’m also kind of biased because I learn everything from a nursing perspective, AND I’m considering becoming a CNM).

I woke up this morning barely able to sit up in bed because I felt so dizzy. The hungover type dizzy. Then once I started moving around it turned into nausea, and none of it’s cleared up through the day. And then earlier this week my nipples hurt for about a day, but I just assumed that was because I haven’t worn a bra since I quit my job. haha It’s probably just a coincidence, but I’m freeeeeeeaking out.

Morning sickness for me was nausea. It was often “am I feeling nauseous?” with waves of “I hate this feeling, let me off this ride” and it started at 3 weeks pregnant (I am sensitive to hormonal fluctuations).

And just so its out there: You will be an awesome mom some day. You are very thoughtful when it comes to discussions on parenting here and I think you have a down to earth parenting style.

Wait until you miss your period to worry about anything. Plus you *probably* wouldn’t get morning sickness when you’re 3 weeks preggo. You could have vertigo. Or it could be the life change of losing your job.

Well so I intentionally skipped my period last week because we were on a roll having sex and I wanted to keep it up. haha So now I have no idea if I would have had a period or not. I’m now reminding myself that that’s what the week without hormones is for.

Benjamin is going to be up north at his family cabin with his dad and some other dudes for a guys’ weekend so he’s leaving me all alone. I have two exams next week (cardiology and swine medicine woo) so I will be studying a lot. Hopefully I can stay focused… and I started knitting the baby blanket for my cousin’s new baby in March even though I haven’t finished my sweater. Oops. The sweater wasn’t really portable anymore!!

Saturday my little sister is having a college party at her house she shares with 3 other girls on campus (she’s an undergrad). She’s inviting like 1 million people, and said she wants to get a lot of freshman. $5 a cup for kegs and wop sort of a deal. However here is the twist… they are going to donate all the money to Relay for Life. What kind of college student is this??!!? I think I’m going to go if I get enough done during the day, and get drunk with people 5 years younger than me and sleep on her futon because it sounds entertaining. Get hit on by some freshman boys and get invited back to the dorms. Don’t worry guys, I will wear plenty of make up and personally call up Garnier Fructis for advice on my hair.

Then Sunday we have our annual meeting for our young farmers group to discuss what sort of events we want to hold for the coming year. And it might be fun, but probably like always I will want to gouge my eyes out with sharp objects because only like 10% of the people there have actually done more than just worked part time on an organic farm once. Mostly they like wearing hipster clothes and act like they are saving the world from the safety of their PhDs on the interaction between organic vegetables and society. OMG so bitter. Holy cow. But I like going because I like to chat with people and occasionally interesting people show up so it should be good.

Yesterday my husband had to have a sudden surgery, and any surgery is very risky for him, but he’s okay so far. I’ve been praying a lot. And crying a lot. I feel very thankful though. Anyways, I’ve become better at asking for help from my friends. I don’t mind giving suggestions for help when they ask but asking straight up has always been hard. So at least there’s progress.

On a happier note, I’m going to try to go to a spa for a couple of hours this weekend with my friends and decompress.

It’s very sunny and warmish today so I’m taking that as a good start. I really need it. I hope you have a great weekend away Wendy (and everyone else too).

I think he must have cracked it while outside playing fetch. I saw blood in the snow and made him come in. I tried to look at his paws but he started licking/chewing on his right back paw, stopped and spat the nail out. He still has some nail on but I can see the quick.
It hasn’t seemed to bother him, he went right back to wanting to play fetch but now he’s laying at my feet and I can tell it’s starting to bother him a bit. He’s been licking and lightly chewing on his whole paw.
I think he’ll be OK, the bleeding wasn’t bad and has stopped. I’ll assess in the morning. From what I can tell online I’ll try to get him to soak it in a hot Epsom Salt bath. And will keep an eye out for any increase in pain / sign of infection and take him to the vet if needed.
One trick I learned from a very expensive trip to the emergency vet one blizzard-y night is to keep a pediatric instant-read anal thermometer around and just monitor his temperature. Per that vet, if I’m worried about infection I can put off a vet visit unless his temp starts to rise, which means the infection has gone systemic. That way I avoid the pricey emergency vet and get him treated at my regular vet.
But so far he’s fence-patrolling and strutting around like normal. I hope that’s all that comes of it. I hate when my puppy-dawg is hurt :(.

ahh so, my Friday– drank wine & watched Spoils of Babylon with my mom (the show that apparently NONE OF YOU have heard of?? It’s on IFC! Portlandia is also on that channel, apparently?) then Fabello came over, & we decided that the choices in plans for the night were: sex, then sleep, OR eat dinner. So I chose the former, although I kinda tricked him ’cause obviously I’m not sleeping. And I just made myself a grilled cheese with melted butter & garlic. I will sleep now, though (yeah, I know, it’s not even 9. We are sleepy people when not out & about, haha)

So real question for you (and anyone else on your situation): you’re an adult and live at home (no shame at all) but you have a boyfriend who also lives at home — so, like, you do it in your bedroom that’s a stone throw from your parents? Does he spend the night and eat breakfast in the am with your parents (as opposed to sneaking out like self-respecting teens!)? Do you use the kitchen to cook just for the two of you (like you’re two couples sharing space and taking turns) or do you do that with your parents? Is it awkward? I lived at home for 3 years after undergrad when I was at law school – I had two boyfriends (albeit neither serious) during that time but they had their own places so that was easy – I just stayed there… But I was actually still really weird about it – I’d usually come home eventually, even at 4 am, so my parents wouldn’t worry the next morning if I was gone, unless I told them ahead of time that I wouldn’t be home that night (but I often would forget so I’d just go home.) Ok so tell me how you two manage to you know have sex and stuff and NOT feel embarrassed with your parents nearby?

My sister and her boyfriend are both 20 and both live at home. His parents are stricter than my mom, so he’ll spend the night, cook in the kitchen, all of that. It’s not really awkward – they’ve been dating almost as long as gf and I have, and he’s a pretty good kid.

IDK about their sex-having habits. They have a lot of time in the house when my mom isn’t there, so they can do it then, but also, we’re a pretty open family around sex, so IDK if having her at home stops them.

haha AP, basically– yes to everything? Like, we have sex in my bedroom, while my parents are home, & try to be quiet (same at his house). Both sets of parents do not care at all, like we’ll go upstairs together like, “good night” & come downstairs in the morning in comfy clothes & eat/drink coffee/read the paper, whatever. This has been going on as long as I’ve dated him– but in the past, yeah, I would have casual sex friends sneak out in the early AM. When Fabello first started openly sleeping over, I thought my dad would mind, at least, but then one day he made some offhand comment like, “Maybe Fabello could help me do x in the morning” so I was like, OH, guess he knows, & doesn’t care? And other than that, it’s whatever, both my family & his are pretty open about sex talk anyway? so it’s not awkward.

The kitchen is actually the only awkward thing– when my mom is doing stuff & we’re in there (we try not to cook at the same time, but we’ll hang out in there, peek around, decide what we wanna eat), she’ll eventually be like, “TOO MANY COOKS IN THE KITCHEN, OUT, OUT, OUT” & we go scurrying. ha. But yeah, we try to time actually cooking when no one else is there. SOMETIMES we cook for everyone, sometimes just the two of us. Which isn’t weird, because my dad gets home at like 8, so my mom eats separately from him anyway. At his house, when we cook, we usually do make enough for everyone in the house (because his family always eats together, it’s just polite there to be like, “hey we’re going this, want to do this with us?”)

Okay I can answer this too because I live at Benjamin’s mom’s house and I have been going back and forth for the last 3.5 years from there. (OMG) I think that maybe this situation is a little bit different because Benjamin’s bedroom and this big office-y area and stuff are upstairs and like, off to the side from the living room and his Mom’s room? So… it almost feels like a little mini-apartment minus a kitchen (the bathroom is just down the stairs and kind of off to the side as well, so only we use it but I still have to put on pants to use it grr..)

I always spent the night and then sometimes we’d run into his Mom/her husband at breakfast but normally I am up and gone before them or vice versa. Dinner is kind of awkward because often they have people over for dinner and we just scurry in, scarf down the food, then run away upstairs again. I’m really looking forward to having my own kitchen because we often cook for them as well.

I just kind of tell myself that we are in different apartments in my head and force myself to believe it. Gah. This new house can’t come fast enough, although we will have one of Benjamin’s employees living with us. Our bedrooms are on the complete opposite sides though.

Tonight I haven’t been feeling that great so I’m taking it easy and catching up on the DW I missed due to a suuuuuper busy work day while watching sappy rom coms on Netflix.

I’m getting really stir crazy due to all the cold and snow that we’ve been having. I just want to go somewhere outside instead of running from the car to my apartment…I almost feel trapped inside. I plan to do a ton of crocheting and reading this weekend. I kind of want to go shopping and get some new clothes, but my budget is telling me otherwise. Boo. Being an adult sucks sometimes.

I start another additional job on Monday which is exciting. I’m co teaching with a nationally acclaimed teacher (!!!!). Like, her band program earned a Grammy for music education. A freaking Grammy, people. She’s really great and down to earth and I know I’m going to learn a lot from her. She has too many students in her program, so she needed a part time assistant until the end of the school year.

Oooo, and Navy Guy is visiting tomorrow. This week is the first time that I’ve really noticed myself missing him. He lives about an hour’s drive from me so we really can only feasibly see each other on weekends unless he doesn’t have class the next day or I don’t have school. It’s not that I didn’t miss him at ALL, but this is the first time it’s been noticeable. I’m going to take it as a good sign. 🙂 I think this weekend we’re going to brainstorm cheap date ideas and maybe try one or two of them.

I actually got the job through my college friend who was her student teacher a few years ago so yay networking! I’m still kinda sorta star struck? Like not really, but I’m just amazed with how much she has done in such a short time. Most of her kids are low income so she also raised money and has received enough donated instruments so that ANYONE can be in band regardless of if they can afford it or not. I’m over here thinking “teach me your waysssss”.

Have fun, Wendy! Taking the train to a cute little town for a little get away sounds so fun. I guess it’s safe to assume you and Drew don’t want me tagging along? Cause I will, just say the word…

Today I am brunching with friends, going to see “Her,” and playing with Moose. I also need to clean up my place because there are two showings today. The last two weeks have been a real pain because I’ve had showings almost every day, which means every morning, in addition to getting myself ready for the day and packing up Moose to take him to day care, I have to do a sweep through the house and make sure my bed is made, all dishes are cleaned up, all doggie toys are put away, there’s no stray doggie poop, etc. etc. Exhausting. The good news is I’ve had 3 offers – 1 was a low ball offer – and 2 were good and those 2 came in yesterday so price war! Hopefully I’ll get it under contract soon – so I can stop having to keep it super clean and super picked up every day. Tomorrow I plan to play with Moose some more, write a movie review, and I’m going to a super bowl party Sunday night. (For the food and to see friends. Though between you and me, Sunday nights I prefer to stay home – lots of good Sunday TV these days – often an award show + Sister Wives + Girls!) And then dammit-all-to-hell it’s already Monday – how did the weekend go by so fast?!!

Just saw it. I found it really annoying. I’m trying to articulate why on 700 words. Ugh.

Oh, I had a DW dream— I was shopping for shoes for rachel. Only I didn’t know what size to get, so I was like, “Hmm, 7? 7.” (@rachel, are you a size 7? I think my logic in the dream was to pick something in the middle, haha)

ETA: RACHEL you’re here! Look at my comment! hahaa

Haha, that’s hilarious. Nope, I’m more like an 8.5, so sadly your dream shoes wouldn’t fit me.

Also – my sister dreamed that I died and my mom dreamed that I cut my leg up skydiving…so…apparently I’m very dream-worthy this week? I’m glad your dream about me was more positive.

Oh! I was dreamt about this week too and you guys will love this- my sort of SIL dreamt that jake and I were getting married and we told everyone they had to spend 4 grand on their outfits… Lol. So then we are texting about how ridiculous that is and she decided she would have had to buy the Victoria’s Secret million dollar bra, haha, and then I told her your welcome for making her Victoria’s Secret dreams come true.

        She is so hilarious.

I had a non-DW-related dream (although it might have happened in part because of TA’s pregnancy scare) but I’m going to share it anyway.

In my dream, I woke up and had nipple discharge coming out of my left nipple. It started out clear and watery but I squeezed it to see what would happen, and then foamy white stuff started coming out of it! Intrigued, I kept squeezing it and then it POPPED like a zit – but also made an actual popping sound – and a bunch of gunk sprayed all the way up to the ceiling. At this point I woke up, horrified, but also relieved that it was just a dream. I immediately checked my nipple anyway, only to realize OMG THERE IS NIPPLE DISCHARGE. So I went to my doctor, fearing cancer or something…except my doctor was the woman who does my hair (at which point I should have realized that I was actually still dreaming, but I didn’t) and she told me that it was a sure sign of pregnancy, but she couldn’t do a pregnancy test on me because it was the weekend. Even though part of my brain realized in my dream that, duh, I haven’t had sex, I started panicking and wondering how on earth I could take care of a baby.

Then when I FOR REAL woke up, you bet I checked my nipples. (Guys, I’m awake now, right??)

Ugh Fabello is as disinterested in the Superbowl as I am, which is good, but he likes parties & food so I think we’re going to his cousin’s house for a Superbowl party 🙁 And I was like, “ooh should we bring spinach dip?” so he texted to ask, & they were like, “YEAH” so now I have to make spinach dip, & I don’t feel like it, really (even though I originally was excited to offer, apparently? Now I’m like, “oh, damn, I committed myself to that.”)

I’m spending the day by myself studying, but I’m preemptively annoyed by all the Facebook statuses I know I’m going to be seeing all day. First World Problems much?

Dude, I already saw a bunch of statuses (the game didn’t even start yet!) & was annoyed, THEN I thought to myself, “wait, it’s February 2nd, where are all the Groundhog Day statuses? I can’t believe the Superbowl is overshadowing Groundhog Day” & now I’m ashamed I had those thoughts, about Facebook statuses. haha (but honestly, poor Groundhog Day)

Ah yes, that’s so sad! I was making spinach dip with Fabello & my mom came in to tell us (providing these details for AP, to be like KITCHEN. FOOD MAKING. PARENTALS. ADULT CHILDREN.) (Also, sorry I had some wine.)

One more thing on the Superbowl— it’s in NEW JERSEY GUYZ. The media keeps calling it the New York Superbowl or something? & I know everyone in my state has been complaining about this for weeks, but a little wine on the day of, & I guess I care too? but dude, it’s in East Rutherford. I hooked up with somebody who lived there when I was in college, & the person’s mother saw me running naked into the bathroom, & in the morning I got a ticket for parking on the wrong side of the street, EAST RUTHERFORD. (Not that I care, the NFL apparently did a bunch of asshole things at the hotels they were staying at? So New York can have them 😉 ) (Also, there ya go, Cats, I think I hated on the SUperbowl enough to distract fans from thumbing you down< haah)

Guys, I went to a club last night. That’s how drunk I was.

Haha, I’m exaggerating, I wasn’t that drunk, and it wasn’t that bad. It’s just not my type of scene usually, though I love to dance.

OH & a story I meant to tell— Fabello, the other day, was like, “yo, why you been on your phone so much lately?” & I was like, “Um… my advice site… has a mobile app now?”

him: What the hell? It’s like a traveling, virtual support group.

me: I know. Isn’t it GREAT.

    him: I WANT ONE.
