Weekend Open Thread

Happy Friday, full moon, Valentine’s Day, y’all! I don’t know about you, but I am so glad it’s the weekend. Today is actually our Saturday because Drew is working a Sunday-Thursday schedule during the Olympics. He is also working late evenings and hasn’t been coming home until after Jackson goes to bed, giving me a small taste of what single parenthood might be like (oy). It has also snowed like three times this week and we have layers of slippery ice on the sidewalks and it’s very hard getting around, especially with a 2-year-old in tow. Yesterday, I carried him two whole blocks — for his very first ice cream date! So cute — and managed to get around ice banks, snow drifts, and two-foot slush puddles, and then right in front of our door I slipped on a patch of ice and fell hard (we were both ok, thankfully). Also, Jack’s babysitter, who watches him three mornings a week, took a snow day yesterday. Also, Jackson only naps 50% of the time these days. For all these reasons, TGIMF, yo.

I’m writing this on Friday morning and Drew is home and he’s about to take Jackson to a play space and I’m going to have like two whole hours to myself. I am going to use them to line up content for next week because that is just how much I love you guys and love working on this site. I’ll probably also do a Buzzfeed quiz or two because they are unavoidable. (But, to be honest, if it weren’t such a fucking pain walking around and if I didn’t think snow boots might ruin freshly-painted nail polish, I’d be heading out for a pedicure.).

Anyway. Does anyone have any fun Valentine’s plans?

I’m so glad you and Jackson are okay after the fall, Wendy! Ice is so scary. It’s like we have no control over our lives when there’s ice out.

We’re going out for hibachi tonight, which we only allow ourselves to do every three months because of how expensive it is. It’s been four months though, and we haven’t been out to eat at all in about a month, so I’m excited. Then we’re going to make heart shaped sugar cookies together and decorate them with icing and sprinkles. I also think I’m going to make him some red and white M&M cookies this afternoon, because he loves cookies.

I’ve been working from home for the past 2 days because my fiance’s house got 15 inches of snow! The roads are fine, so we’re going out for Pho tonight. Not the fanciest dinner but I’m so psyched. I feel like Pho heals my soul (not that it really needs healing, but it’s that nurturing). I’m excited for valentines day presents cause I got my fiance an awesome gift. I got him NanoBlocks which i think he’s going to love cause he’s an engineer and he loved legos as a kid. So I’m really excited to have him open his gift.

Since I’m long distance with my boyfriend, I’ve having a low key night. Making a replica of my favorite thai food from one of my favorite’s from Chicago (garlic chicken) for dinner. Doing my nails, face mask, all that jazz while having some quality netflix time. I’m so excited. I haven’t had a nice, relaxing night for awhile.

We don’t have anything fun planned for the weekend, other than going out to brunch tomorrow at a diner we love. Maybe I’ll go to yoga on Sunday, too. We’re not doing anything for Valentine’s Day, since I called it off a few weeks ago. It’s pretty freeing to not celebrate it! So we’re just going to stay home and eat pizza and it will be great!

Tonight a good girlfriend and I are meeting up for dinner at a local dive bar then going to a concert. Kind of excited and I don’t think we’ll be surrounded by stupid couple. Ok, not stupid. Just couples. Tomorrow I’m going to yoga then meeting up with my sis for a late lunch and I’m also forcing her to go the Lego movie with me. Yeah. I’m a dork. Should be a good weekend though.

That couldn’t have been fun for you either, and keeping your site running is hard enough without blowhards coming over and threatening your readers. My fiance and I want to go out tonight, but we also want to avoid restaurants at all costs, so we’re probably gonna hit up a wine bar. I just wanna wear this dress: http://www.tobi.com/product/53479-tobi-cindy-midi-dress?color_id=73021 because I look hot in it! We *never* go out to eat. The last time we went to a sit-down restaurant was on our anniversary over 6 months ago! I’d rather spend the money on wine.

We’re celebrating Valentine’s Day for real tomorrow because the weather is going to be gorgeous. He has a surprised planned for me, so we shall see. I think we’re either going to winery or a brewery in the hill country! He gave me a foot massage bath thing as a present last night and I LOVE IT. Washing/lotioning my feet is my ultimate comfort. I sit on the bathroom counter and soak my feet on almost a nightly basis and now I get to do it wherever!

I’ll confess that I really love Valentine’s Day while in a relationship. It fits into my love language. I don’t even know if it’s an actual love language, I just feel loved when my fiance puts a good amount of thought and energy into planning something special for me. I made him breakfast this morning and cooked bacon to spell out “I heart U” so yeah, Valentine’s Day is my kind of holiday.

Unrelated, if you are in the market for the comfiest t-shirt in the entire world, look no further: . It arrived in the mail this morning and I don’t think I’m ever going to take it off.

i am also getting excited about my friends bachelorette party! i am finding all these awesome ideas on pinterest and i want to craft all the things. also, i had this great idea to treat the party to a limo ride and dessert fondue, but limos are like 150 a hour in nyc!! geez, nyc is cramping my style.

BUT can i tell you this funny thing? i just sent jake a picture of harry potter with “i’d like to get my basilisk in your chamber of secrets” and he goes “gross” and so i said “fine then you cant have my chamber” and he came back with “only if you speak in parsletongue” and i died. jake doesnt even like harry potter. that is special love, people.

My dad can etch anything on glass. He etched our wedding champagne glasses for us. He also etched a giant Elvis face onto a mirror for my mom in the 80s, which was both very impressive and very questionable in taste. I have no idea how he does it though.

I was up all night working so by the time I got to work, I pretty much just sat there and did nothing while I read DW all day. I think that’s a productive day.
    .
This morning, my husband made me the best breakfast sandwich. It was heavenly. Or I was just really hungry. This is the first year we’re really doing something besides sex and candy (does anyone remember that song??) and I’m excited all of a sudden. Tonight, I’m making lasagna in heart-shaped ramekins. Last night, I made some brownies and I’m going to cut them to spell ‘I love you’. I know, so sappy and mushy.
    .
Oh, and I almost forgot. I had a DW dream the other night. Instead of a website, DW was a live, skit performance. Every commenter was there in person. Wendy was the host and opened with a monologue, which was the letter and her advice. Then all the commotion began with everyone on stage chiming in. There would be lots of clapping and cheering when people liked what someone said and booing and heckling when someone said something offensive. And then Addie was interrupting and moving all across the stage every few minutes with something really random. It was pretty entertaining.

I feel really bad saying this but I’m actually glad that the guy I was/am sorta seeing right now is in jail. He won’t be in there long and it’s not for anything so bad that I consider a dealbreaker but I’m glad he is away for 2 reasons. One so that I didn’t have to have a talk what to do about valentine’s day because I’ve never been a fan and somehow the men I meet always disagree or don’t believe me. And two, because I’m not missing him being gone is a pretty obvious sign that I’m not that into him and I’ll end things when he gets out.

Not sure if you’ll see this by now, but yes, I’ve seen the tv adaptations of Cordelia Gray, and I liked them too! I think I read one of the books, awhile ago, but I can’t quite remember enough to tell you which was better.
I definitely recommend Lynley, and I think the Cordelia Gray shows are worth watching too! 🙂

I keep forgetting it’s valentine’s day because there is exactly ZERO festivities going on at work – I haven’t even seen a bouquets of flowers being delivered or candy out on people’s desks – nada. No one is even wearing red today. Are we SURE today is valentine’s day?!
    *
This weekend I plan to: play with Moose, finish the 5th and final season of Breaking Bad (god I’m so sad it is ending for me – I started watching it on Netflix just a few weeks ago so I have been logging some major netflix time) and maybe start House of Cards (so so so happy season 2 is on!) … oh and also I want to re-re-restart a diet this weekend. I have been eating OUT OF CONTROL and I feel terrible. Just gross.
    *
I also need to seriously think about packing and who the hell is going to move my stuff and to where b/c I close on my condo on March 11 and that’s basically tomorrow and… and I haven’t thought much about or worked out those details. I should be stressed about it but I will plan to stress about it later.

Yay Happy Friday. I am literally sitting in my office online shopping until it’s an appropriate time to leave because I am over.this.week. Tonight we are going on a really romantic 10 mile run and doing laundry. Tomorrow we’re going snowboarding and then out to my favorite restaurant. Sunday we’re having a game day with my friends that will involve day drinking and then Sunday night I’m meeting different friends for drinks. Monday we’re going snowboarding again. This weekend rocks, in summary.

Oh and sometime in between all that madness I need to buy Colin his Valentine’s day present. Which is this,

E had his vaccines today and it was 4 separate shots. I feel bad for not feeling bad for him. Other moms say how hard it is to hold their kid down to get shots but it isn’t hard for me at all which makes me feel like I’m doing parenting wrong. I know it’s best for him though and I think that’s why it doesn’t affect me, I feel bad for him when he falls and hurts himself.
Tomorrow Mr. Grass is cooking dinner but tonight it is just E and I so I’m making chilli for dinner and cleaning up the celery that he has broken into many tiny pieces and scattered across the floor. And then I’m drinking wine.

I put on P’s favorite jeans of mine for tonight, and when I went out in the rain to the grocery store, my pants started smelling like dog. What is that? try washing your clothes in vinegar once. it could be a build up of detergent, happens to towels too. just plain white vinegar works fine. it rinses out all the crap stuck in the material.

We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. Coincidence, this year our yearly date is scheduled for tomorrow. We’re seeing a movie (first in two years) and getting dinner afterwards.

I also splurged and bought tickets to see Gabriel Iglesias in May with my mom, stepdad and two oldest boys.

My Valentine’s Day consisted of: sleeping most of the day because I was hungover, meeting with my group for a class project (we are making a video that explains the parathyroid gland and I was a patient with hypocalcemia, so I got to say, “My bowel sounds are hyperactive and I HAVE DIARRHEA!”), getting home at 10pm, eating leftover Imo’s, and falling asleep early. I did get a “Valentine” from my ex that said, “Don’t make me cry and masturbate alone. Be my Valentine.”

My Valentine’s Day went like this: take Moose to day care, go to work, work/dearwendy, meet friend in lobby, drive to pick up Moose, go home, play with Moose, feed Moose, put Moose in his room, walk to Andy’s Thai Kitchen and eat all the food and drink our own wine, go home, cuddle Moose and feel guilty for leaving him, go to bed.

Because (almost) everybody is surely dying to know, Day After VD has gone like this: wake up, watch Breaking Bad, re-heat leftover pizza from Tuesday, watch Breaking Bad, … That’s all I got. But it’s only just after 9 am.

Anyway, Dave went snowboarding with a friend this afternoon/evening, so I’m home alone, drinking wine and cooking! It’s one of my favorite things to do. I’m enjoying a lovely Malbec, and have a pot of red sauce on the stove. Next up I’m making a marinade for Spicy Korean Beef. Then I’m not sure what I will do. Maybe make some meatballs?

Then I’m going to order my seeds for my garden!! Yay! And then I’m going to watch the documentary 20 Feet From Stardom. Last night we watched The Dallas Buyers Club. Dave was confused and thought “It was that movie with Leonardo DiCaprio” (Wolf of Wall Street). I wonder how long he sat there wondering when they were going to go to NYC!

I have a weird/random question for you guys: is there any way to block users on Words with Friends? I realize this is ridiculous, but I cut a toxic friend from my life two years ago. Essentially she does not treat her friends well — she’ll bail last minute on us, she’ll plan things and not follow through, she’ll invite us over and then abandon us to go drink by herself (I think I posted about that on here before), etc. I haven’t seen her or talked to her in at least two years. Now all of a sudden she’s starting a bazillion games with me. I decline all of them but the moment I decline she starts a new game…and I haven’t figured out if there’s a block option.

I suppose part of this is that my parents are now “snow birds” so they have no place up north in the winter. And yeah, I miss that blast of ice and snow every Christmas….
