Dear Wendy
Dear Wendy

Weekend Open Thread

Hooray, hooray, hooray — Mercury Retrograde is over today and so is February. Sayonara and adios! I will be happy to not see either of them again for a long time. And to celebrate their departure, I am heading to the airport and hightailing it to Chicago, by myself, for a long weekend of sleeping, resting, catching up with my friends, and more sleep (and probably some drinks, let’s be honest). Seriously, I hope I sleep like 10-12 hours a night for the next three nights. I hope I am so well-rested when I get home that I look and feel 10 years younger (I will settle for five).

Winter is a funny time to visit Chicago, but I like going for a change of scenery and the simple reason that nothing is expected of anyone/me. I can spend the whole weekend hunkered down at my friend’s house — which is at least different than the four walls of my own home I’ve been staring at for the last three months — drinking champagne cocktails, cooking meals, and watching movies, and it’s fine. But we’ll probably get out for a nice dinner, I think. And we’ll go for some winter walks just to get some fresh air. But other than that, I will be in leggings and slipper socks, being lazy and re-charging for the second half of Jackson’s Terrible Twos.

Also: the Oscars are Sunday! Are you gonna watch? What are your predictions?

Sounds like an awesome weekend! I’m glad you’re able to get away to recharge!

One of my best friends is at a job interview right now 1 BLOCK AWAY FROM MY JOB!!! I am so excited! I hope she gets it. We’re meeting for happy hour after she’s done. It will be so amazing if she gets this job!

This weekend I’m planting some of my seeds for my garden, assuming spring will actually arrive. Sunday Dave is going out to lunch with his x-gf, so those of you who offered to crash with with me, book your plane tickets! Sunday after his lunch a lady is bringing her foster dog over to meet us/the cats!!! I hope we like him and the cats don’t freak out!

Awesome!! What kinds of seeds are you planting?
I’m planting my peppers this weekend, then in another week or 2 I’ll plan my tomatoes, and green beans. If the snow ever melts I’m going to plant my lettuce and carrots right in the ground in April.

This is the worst winter I’ve ever experienced, and it’s killing me. I’m so cranky, and I haven’t run in weeks, and the wind hurts my face. Why don’t humans hibernate? This is really, really reaffirming the fact that I’m making the right decision by moving to San Diego.

Weekend…I don’t know. I’ll probably work a bit, and drink a bit. Have fun in Chicago Wendy!

Oh my gosh, the green thumbs are planting so early!! We have 2 weeks until greenhouse time…

This weekend Benjamin is gone at a farming conference so I am all alone and don’t really want to study. But I am not really feeling brave enough to go out on the town by myself either so I will probably just wrap myself up in a blanket and nap/watch netflix and do as much studying as I can force myself to. Tomorrow morning I am getting brunch with my BFF from high school who found out she did not get into veterinary school 🙁 hopefully we can chat about a bunch of other things and I can try my best to not be awkward about it.

Our last anticipated frost is in 8 weeks, so peppers can get started now, since the really hot ones take forever to germinate. I have a grow light and a heat mat, so I’m all set to start them inside. (no greenhouse for me)

You’re a lot further north/colder than I am. March 1 is the generally accepted seed start date around here. And I’ll keep the seeds inside for a couple of weeks then move them to the greenhouse outside.

OH GAWD I AM NOT DIAGNOSING YOUR KITTY.

Most shelter/adopted kitties have herpes that can contribute to intermittent conjunctivitis. However most of the time it’s multifactorial and there’s a secondary bacterial infection present as well.

My kitties each have a runny eye that just runs and sometimes gets slightly inflamed no matter what. I blame the herpes.

        theattack February 28, 2014, 6:08 pm

Haha, no worries about the not-diagnosis. This kitty is the daughter of the cat we adopted last year, so maybe it got passed on or something. It’s all just speculation that really doesn’t matter as long as this clears up. I thought she just scratched her eye, or that one of the other cats did while beating her up.

PPS I decided I am going to apply for an alpaca scholarship that would give me the opportunity to go to a 6 day intensive llama and alpaca veterinary training-camp-thing in Massachusetts (I had no idea how to spell that state at all). I may never touch a llama or alpaca again as a veterinary practitioner, but I have a bit of experience with them and I’m really intrigued from a personal standpoint so I’m just going to DO IT. Even if it’s a “waste of time.”

Because this supports my new, less-stress mindset about my future. Instead of worrying about what job I want in the future and then trying to develop the best skill set for it to make sure I get it… I want to figure out what skills I would like to learn and then learn them and hopefully that will help me in my career if not right away then someday. Or not. Then everything seems so much less pressured. I have to remember that learning is fun… 😉

Speaking of Chicago. I’m actually pretty tired of the weather. I’m ready for spring.

I went out drinking last night, so tonight, I think I’m just going to hunker down, order food and watch The Americans. Maybe pick up a bottle of wine or open the super ridiculous expensive/high alcohol content beer I’ve had for a couple months now. I might decide to feel a little sorry for myself too. But then tomorrow, I’ll get up. Go to yoga. Run some errands. And go out.

Guys, I have a Saturday night to myself. For the first time in like, ever. Normally we have folks come to our house, or Othello and I will go out together or I’ll go out with some girlfriends. Never does he go out by himself to leave me home alone. However, Othello’s been talking into going out to do stuff I have zero interest in, and I get the house all to myself. For many hours. I have no idea what to do with myself, but I’m quite looking forward to it!

PPPS I finished Blackfish, which I found really interesting. And now I am watching “The Elephant in the Living Room” and I am like 20 minutes in and it is BLOWING MY MIND. It’s on netflix. Someone else watch it this weekend so we can discuss it. Our ethics lecture on thursday was all about elephants in captivity so it’s kind of related (although no elephants yet) and I’m really horrified/fascinated/mystified by this mindset.

Bleeeccch. Blackfish broke my heart. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest gave me a million chances to see Orcas in the wild and know the mythologies behind them and native people’s relationships with them, and I just can’t with captive whales. I’m not like a huge anti-zoo person either, but it’s not like Orcas are even benefiting from the conservation aspect of zoos and aquariums.

Man, that was saaaaad. Just, those majestic animals who’re meant to roam free! I really have a hard time with zoos because it just seems so WRONG, even though I *get* the conservation aspect of it all. But for private citizens to just cage up these animals because they simply want to? So very wrong.

But seriously. I would have, no hesitation, released Lambert from the enclosure even if meant him running out into the wilderness. Which maybe makes me a horrible person. But at least then he could have been darted and recaptured instead of… watching that happen… ugh.

I can’t exactly afford it…but I did just get my tax refund. First time for everything — I can’t say I’ve ever adopted a cat with a tax refund before! I know my cat would enjoy having a playmate, but I know it wouldn’t be the best idea financially. But he’s SO CUTE. With a bit fat furry face and gorgeous fur and adorable eyes and he’s the cutest thing everrrr (besides my cat of course). Talk me off this ledge because I’m *thisclose* to adopting another cat.

When I had cats, I always had two so they could keep each other company when I wasn’t home. In some cases, they were great friends. In some cases, they were okay friends after an adjustment period. I never had a pair that hated each other. They always have different personalities, and that was fun and interesting. I can see that this talking you off the ledge thing isn’t going well, so I will stop now.

Just don’t eat for a week… 😉 You’d win the weigh in and have 2 cats.

On a serious note, if you can’t afford the money for a deposit or adoption fee I would wait on it. Just because 2 cats equals double the chance of having a veterinary emergency or just veterinary care that needs to be done, double the vaccinations, etc. And you’d hate for a twist of fate to totally screw you over.

I applied for three jobs today and also unemployment. I am really tired of trying to explain my race and ethnicity on drop down menus. I’m white and Native American and ethnically Hispanic. Can I click the box for “Native American” without having to enter a BIA identification? Nope. I don’t have a BIA identification because I’m a native from Mexico. Non-white hispanic? UGH. I’m mixed race and am only not a “Native American” because two colonial governments dropped a border literally right in the middle of my tribe’s territory.

Oh man. Feel you there. We actually have zero proof that my great grandfather was Native American, though we’re like 90% sure that he was Comanche or Wichita given the part of Texas the family hails from…except the family hid all proof that the heritage was there because of all the institutionalized racism, which is, you know, part of the reason funding exists. I mean, for me personally, I don’t feel like I’ve been held back any, but I’m sure my mom’s parents wouldn’t have had to struggle so much because my grandfather had some really limited options growing up because of his heritage. Which I’m sure had an effect on my life in ways I don’t know, but it’s not so much the money I regret as the huge chunks of my family history that are gone because of the shitty things the government did.

It’s so nice to have someone tell me I have to do it even when I get grouchy and mean about it, because I just hate it so much. He’s really good at making up free exercises just using your own body. Honestly, I’m drained. My week has been long, hard, and just plain exhausting. I’ve been run ragged. Meetings, meetings, and more meetings. I broke my bad tooth again and it’s bothering me. I can’t get it pulled until my boss gets back from maternity leave (three weeks minimum), so I go in tomorrow morning for an emergency visit to get antibiotics to calm the abscess that has sprung up.
I’ve been chosen to be a super-user for a new program we’re adopting at work, the only non-salaried employee to be this “super-user”. Against my protestations. I’ve been pulled into a subcommittee for a committee that I take minutes for (board of directors thing) so yay, more frickin’ meetings for me to sit in on.
I’m being treated like management, act like management, but I’m not and I certainly don’t get paid as such. Money’s tight so I can’t really ask for a raise in good conscience, because I know how tight our budget is, and I know that we’re close to laying people off.

In good news, if all works out, I’m going to the Miners and Trappers Ball Saturday night. I’m looking forward to it. I need the night out and the chance to let m hair down, so to speak.

I’m sorry your cat has diabetes. My elderly girl cat got diabetes. She didn’t have a weight issue, so losing weight wasn’t going to be a help. I had to give her shots of insulin as well as special canned and dry food.
I was lucky in that she liked several flavors of that food. I also had a boy cat at the time. Because he was getting old enough to be a risk for diabetes, the vet said he could also eat the special food too, so I didn’t have to worry about her eating the wrong food.
I was nervous about giving shots, but after a couple of days I was completely comfortable with it. Initially, I had to go back to the vet every few weeks for blood checks to adjust the insulin dose. Once she stabilized, I only had to go for blood checks every few months.

Aw, your poor cat. Mine isn’t at that stage, the vet wants to see if losing weight will help before taking other measures. We were worried about her not eating the food (she can be picky) but she seems to like it (so far). It’s good to hear that even at the giving insulin stage, you only had to go every couple weeks/months… so it’s not debilitating? I’m trying not to worry, but still am.

We brought her because we noticed she was drinking a lot of water, so this isn’t a super surprise (& actually I’m relieved it’s not her kidneys) but, still.

This cracked me up. If I touch the cat carrier on accident my cats start yowling and running around the room like the sky is falling.

My girlfriends threw me a bachelorette party last night and it was awesome! There were 10 of us and we all spent the night at one girl’s house. We drank and ate a penis-shaped cake and played tons of fun games and they all told funny stories about me.

I don’t always feel like I have a lot of close friends, so it was really special and meaningful to hear their stories and celebrate together. Now I’m even more excited to get married in less than 3 weeks!!!

Ugh. Mercury is an inner planet and therefore has no retrograde. Astrology: spreading misinformation and psuedoscience since the 1400s.

Today I went with the theatre kids and Director to a clinic for our contest show, Of Mice and Men. The way that works, if you’ve never done one, is the kids perform, and then a certified judge who won’t be judging our show at any stage in the competition tells us what we need to do to get better.

So the clinic was held at a local college, whose theatre department is now run by Director’s former high school theatre teacher (he went to the high school we teach at, and Old Man ran it until ~5 years ago when he was, shall we say, asked to retire). Old Man is one of those old school teachers with a kind of hero-worship type of personality – all of his students revere him, and he presents himself as having All the Right Answers to all things theatre (because there’s a right way to do art, apparently). And while the clinician was another guy, we got a twofer because Old Man deigned to grace us with his opinion. And I am conflicted in the extreme. I find him repellent, and he’s been nothing but condescending to me, but Director and I are friends and a REALLY good work team, so I try to hold that in for Director’s sake. I completely disagreed with his opinion on the acting choices – he’s of the opinion that Lenny, the slow character, is autistic. And WHAT. NO. But then he got to the critique of our set, and they were all my original ideas. I had wanted everything to be constructed as if it looked like it had been made of fruit crates and grain sacks, because our restrictions in the contest make the set by nature representational, and I gravitate toward that design style anyway. And Old Man suggested EXACTLY THAT to Director, and I was like, “SEEEEEEEE?????” So I’m all of a sudden weirdly agreeing very strongly with Old Man, and it’s just…very strange.

Anyway, that was my day. I’m about to go out and enjoy Mardi Gras with the derby girls and my mom and my uncle, who’s in from San Francisco. I need to clear my head after my morning.

Also, eczema super blows. It’s currently really into my feet, and a spot on my big toe just started bleeding like fucking crazy. It’s seriously itchy, and it’s very into areas covered by my derby gear. So, feet, knees, elbows, scalp. And yes, it’s eczema. I thought it might be something like athlete’s foot. But no. And treating it like it was produced some really fucking gross results. Anyway, I need some vodka. Gah.

Thanks! It wasn’t too bad. It’s more painful than a navel piercing, but not by much.

I’m homesick. I’ve been on “vacation” in Utah to spend time with Nigel’s family. His mother threw us a wedding shower on Saturday. I don’t want to get into all the details right now because it’s too depressing, but this has been the most challenging, emotionally exhausting week I’ve had in a long time. A new bomb has been dropped on me every day we’ve been here. Today’s bomb caused me to break down into tears. Nigel has been great at helping me cope with everything. Last night after our depressing wedding shower we went downtown to drink some beers and just laugh at how horrible things have been. Plus the bar we went to sells awesome pint glasses for $4.99! I’ve tried to focus on the positives- it really has been great to meet a few of his friends and get to know his nieces and nephews. I’m just so ready to be home with my kitties.

Oh, which bar did you go to? Depending on your choice, the $4.99 beers may have even been real beers, instead of the 3.2% alcohol beers.

We went to… Squatters? I think? It was a really cool brewery. The beers were 5 bucks, but we also bought a couple of monogrammed pint glasses that were only $4.99 (monogrammed with Polygamy Porter and also one with Provo Girl).

I am way way late to this thread but I had to comment when I saw “Three Little Birds” on the homepage. That has been a sort of theme song helping me hold it together lately. Wendy must have caught my brainwaves this weekend.

I love this music, too. I still have this album, as in the vinyl one 🙂 We did not call it vinyl back then, though– it was called a “record”
