Weekend Open Thread

Screen Shot 2014-03-12 at 1.15.47 PM

Happy Friday! I don’t know about you, but I’m glad this week is over. There were some highlights: Drew and I went to our first Broadway show in about four years (we saw “All The Way” with Bryan Cranston); I saw an old friend last night whom I hadn’t seen since like June, we went to a couple of gallery openings in Chelsea, and we got margaritas afterward; the donation drive was such a success that I feel very optimistic now about the future of DW; it was warm enough to squeeze in a couple jogs (slow ones, but still); I met with my endocrinologist yesterday and, after three years, learned we finally have my thyroid disorder under control. But it was an exhausting week and I’m glad it’s over.

Mostly, I was annoyed that, after a few warm days, winter came back with a vengeance. Plus, Drew and Jackson are both still feeling the last lingering effects of the sickness they caught two weeks ago while I was away. And Jackson only napped two days out of the last seven, making for some very long afternoons, especially considering his level of crankiness, exhaustion (his and mine) and the teething situation as his final molars push on through. This morning I took him to African Dance class, which we do every Friday morning, and he was so great in class — really fun and sweet and not at all whiny like he can sometimes get — and then, as soon as class was over, it was like Dr. Jekyll left the building and Mr. Hyde came out (did I get that right?) and, Good lord, the tantrum was EPIC. EPIC! It lasted the entire 25-minute walk home, rivaling the sounds of construction and traffic all along the way, and, when we finally made it to the front door, it was all I could do to muster the energy to fold his stroller and carry him — kicking and SCREAMING — up the three flights of stairs to our apartment. And then I basically collapsed (well, after I got him fed, changed his diaper, and got him down for his nap). And sweet Georgia tea, the boy has been asleep for an hour and half and is still going strong, so thank God for that.

Tonight I am doing nothing — just catching up on some TV (“Billy on the Street” started this week!) and doing some reading and going to bed early. Tomorrow night I’m taking Drew out to dinner as a thank-you for being so gracious about my going off to Chicago and leaving him alone with CrazyJ for three days, and then on Sunday we’re celebrating my FIL’s 94th birthday (yes, 94!) with the extended fam in Manhattan.

Oh, by the way, the donation drive is officially over, but I am leaving the fundraising thermometer up in the top right corner through the weekend. Of course, you can donate any time, but, if you donate before Monday, you can see your contribution reflected on the thermometer and see how close we get to the goal. So far, as of 1:15 this afternoon, 238 people have donated to the drive and we have raised $6,764! I’ve already applied some of that money to adding more RAM to my existing server to see if that does the trick and I can avoid upgrading to a much more expensive server. Next week I’m hiring my IT guru (a fellow DW reader) to work on securing the site a bit better from spam bots, which should further help matters. (In addition, I am deleting old forum threads — I’ve deleted over 600 so far — which is freeing up space). Anyway, if you’d like to still donate, you can do so here. Everyone who donates gets a fortune cookie message from me (I’ve been known to be psychic!), as well as your name mentioned on the Thank You page (if you want). Additionally, I’ll be sending out hand-written thank-you notes throughout the year to contributors, and I’m really excited that a crafty DW reader has agreed to create (and donate!) some awesome DW merchandise that I will be sending to a few lucky (and particularly generous) contributors.

Well, that’s my news. What about you?

Nephewscruffs is a month old today, and my brother and I decided that I’ll go visit next month to meet him! Maybe even babysit for an evening so my brother and SIL can go on a date. I can’t wait to visit both them AND all of my favorite Portland food carts!

Yay for adorable squishy new nephews! I’m rather fond of mine. I’ve never been a baby person AT ALL but I was blown away by how I just can’t stop looking at him, ever since he came into our lives. Of course everyone’s nephew is a Special Nephew 😀

Saturday is Hot Date Night with Banano, yay! We’re going out for a candlelit dinner, and then to see Grand Budapest Hotel. Anyone seen it?

I am buying a new outfit tonight for our date because…new outfit excuse. And payday. And tomorrow’s supposed to be in the 60s!

Happy PI day everyone. I walked over to Georgetown to buy some pies and then work gave us pie too. So pie for everyone! My fiancé and I are going to work on our wedding registry a little this weekend which is exciting, I just hope he doesn’t fight me too much on “do we really need this”. All the decisions that go into planning a wedding and preparing for marriage are really eye-opening and enlightening (in the good way). You find out a lot of quirky little things about your partner’s preferences and tastes that you would’ve never imagined (for example, we’re going to buy more investment pieces of furniture and he LOVES big, dark, traditional wood furniture where as I like white.everything.everywhere. I was fascinated when I found this out). Or he’ll have a really strong opinion on something that’s not a big deal to me. It’s just interesting.

Yes! (okay not on the engagement part… but the life-building part…) With this complete overhaul of the house we’ve had to make 1 million different decisions about what we want for it. Basically permanently. It’s been interesting to see how our preferences kind of match up. Luckily we both agree on the general concept/idea/look/feel that I have summed up as:

“Dying or dead nature colors and style.”

Muted earth tones with matte earthy stuff without a lot of decorative stuff. So, soapstone, oiled reclaimed floors, shaker style cabinets made by an amish dude. We are going to use reclaimed slate roof tiles as our tile in the entryway and farm-employee-errbody-bathroom. I really, REALLY want lights that look like they were from a barn: So we agree on the big stuff, it’s just working out the little differences. Fun, but could easily stray into frustrating if we both don’t have the right attitude.

We describe our style as “Natural Eclectic” which means we both have magpie like tendencies to collect things from nature: rocks, bones, minerals, and I like ALL the art. Someday we might have a really pretty life together, but as renters with furniture we hate it’s really hard to make all of our different stuff look good together.

I just got back to memphis last night and it was very strange: snowing at home in the morning and then landing in 64 degree weather. This weekend I’m relaxing. It’s the end of spring break. I don’t have papers I have to grade (yay finishing them before spring break!) doing some cleaning, cooking (new to me) some veggies, working out, keeping on this healthy track (hopefully). I’m excited, my friend is having a fire pit and that means s’mores! (my two favorite things), so it should be a fun weekend.

Oh oh speaking about Bryan Cranston…. while I was out sick on Tuesday, I took the opportunity to finish Breaking Bad. Sadness, depression, heartache, loneliness, misery, pain, hopelessness and despair are a few of the things I am feeling now that it’s over and I’ll never get to experience Breaking Bad again – it’s so sad! (I know, a few months late to the party.) That was seriously one of the best shows ever, and I liked how it ended.

I am sitting here killing the last five minutes of my work shift before I head out to the first of two hockey games for the weekend. I can’t believe the season will be over in another month before playoffs! Gets me how fast time flies anymore.

I was talking to a contact in the sports industry yesterday about a phone call he had had with me to discuss some goals. He really got me thinking, and I followed up with him (so about two weeks after the call) to let him know how I had decided sports was not the right place for me and was going to consider doing some other things. He told me that I seemed very self-aware and should be commended even though I was making tough decisions. It was such a nice thing to hear, but at the same time, I felt awkward because I don’t feel mature or like I have it together at all…anyone who has read my posts here might agree with my assessment. But it’s so nice that someone thinks that way, so it’s motivated me to put more effort into future goals and plans.

Also, I think I pulled a muscle in my chest. When I am at rest I feel fine, but when I go to sneeze or cough…ow! 🙁 Definitely no fun.

Oh my god, I kind of want to just go do that and figure out my future later. … I could go buy a small home in upstate somewhere and get an easy part-time job to pay the bills. *
Plus, most of the money was just what I had put down and principle and a relatively small amour of profit. I got lucky though: sold my place for like 40k more than I paid for it 1.5 years ago. Downside though is condos I’m looking at are like 40k more too so dems da breaks. I wish I had a partner to do all this for me. It stresses me the fuck out. Just give me a small allowance and manage the rest for me and don’t even tell me what happens thanks.

I’m so glad that things are working out with this site.
    .
We’re gonna try and wake up early to go to the farmer’s market at the park tomorrow. Keyword on try. We are not morning people. It’s hard to get the motivation to go and easy to keep pushing it off. Then hopefully relax at the park in the sun with a picnic or something. Then I have a bachelorette party to go to a few hours away. Not really looking forward to driving there and back because we’re trying to get by on one car now and it’s getting complicated trying to coordinate everything. I’m excited to see a few friends I don’t get to see often though. I don’t spend enough time in all female groups.
    .
I also want to finish reupholstering some chairs I got for free years ago and am only now doing something with. We’ve lived here for 9 months and our condo still feels pretty sparse. I want to update a lot of the furniture. I need to get on that.

I sold my house! 13 days on the market, fuck yeah! We got 5K under what we asked (and paid) but we would have gone 5K lower. They still have to have the inspection and can change their minds until next sat but I don’t think they will since they loved it. I am so freaking happy that it sold fast and I don’t have to keep it ridiculously clean anymore.

Billy on the Street is the best!!! I got within like 5 feet of Billy when he premiered the new season at SXSW on Monday! He was surprisingly chill/normal when not in front of the camera/audience.

I had a job interview today that was more of an oral exam on the National Historic Preservation Act/Section 106, ARPA, and laws more than it was about being an employee. I guess they ask each applicant the same eight questions. It was scary! And none of the questions really had anything to do with being an employee. It’s at an agency that I worked for in a different division, so the people know me, so maybe they didn’t feel like they needed to ask any “get to know you” questions. We’ll see what happens, I guess.

I’ve been blowing my nose, like, 4848584x a day and now I have a long red rash under it. And it looks like a mustache.

I’m down in Richmond to visit my college friends for what is probably the last time for a long while, and I will have a red mustache in all the pics.

My friend is coming over today and we’re going to day drink and act stupid, probably wander around my street and check out the shops and bars. There is an Irish pub on my corner and I bet it’ll be hoppin’. I don’t think there are any big St. Patrick’s events in my neighborhood, and i don’t feel like doing the downtown parade or any of that madness.

I’m just really freaking glad that the lecture portion of my semester is O-V-E-R and this is the one weekend I don’t have any studying or homework to do! We had 14 tests in 8 weeks, plus all the other reading and homework assignments. Whooo, I survived! (But then clinicals start next week, so I’ll be back to the grind in no time, and in a hospital all day pretty much every day so no time for DWing…booooo…).

    GAME DAY! GAME DAY!!!!

I’m so excited, you don’t even understand. Game day – which used to freak me out – is so awesome. I feel like a rockstar (a hot one – sparkly spandex FTW) and get to do my favorite thing in the world (derby!) and people ask if they can take pictures of me and little kids ask for my autograph (it’s the cutest thing), and I get to appreciate how smokin hot my teammates are and we have our banked track which means we go WAY fast and the falls are spectacular (and also fun as long as you’re not getting hurt).

And you guys, I’m JAMMING today. Jammers are the ones who score points – they have to make it past everyone else and then back around, and everyone they pass on the other team is a point. So the jammers are the fastest girls and usually the smaller ones, and somehow we discovered (because my captain likes doing mean things to people) that I’m good at it – the six foot tall amazon who used to be the absolute slowest girl on the track. The first couple of times I did it, everyone (myself included) thought it was a total fluke that I got through so fast, but then it kept happening, and against some of the best jammers we have. And so a couple of weeks ago, my coach started making noises about using me as a jammer permanently (or at least, in addition to playing all the other stuff I’ve already been playing), and so tonight we’re playing an easy team (last game they played they lost by over 200 points – and the other team was doing everything they could to give them points, including skating an entire play BACKWARDS). So I’m jamming. And I’m terrified, but I am so excited, and I’m beyond proud of myself that I’m here. Anyway, I’ll post again tomorrow, if I’m in one piece 😉

Ow. OW. I mean, we won, I didn’t get seriously hurt, I had a blast, but HOLY SHIT I HURT. I also may end up with a black eye, though it looks like it’s just going to be super sore. One of the other team’s blockers hit me badly and ended up head-butting me. I was honestly being an asshole – one of her teammates was trying a very stupid strategy on me, and I wasted no time telling her how stupid I thought it was, so I may have deserved that a little…but whatever. It was fun. Now time to go find some ibuprofen.

Well my weekend is a lot less exciting than it seemed yesterday. I had plans to go to a friend’s for a dinner party (and was going to bring this cake: http://pinchofyum.com/salted-caramel-apple-upside-down-cake) but they found a bedbug, so plans are obviously off. Instead, I am doing a job application and my taxes! And got into a stupid fight with my roommate this morning in which he proved to be a chauvinist jerk, so that was fun.

But, I’m taking a bunch of clothes to a consignment store so hopefully they buy a bunch of my stuff! I really need to do a big closet clean out so this is a step in the right direction. I have a bunch of stuff I don’t wear as regularly as I should just because I have SO MANY CLOTHES but I always hesitate to clear them out because I still like and fit into them. Argh.

Navy Guy found out about DW today. It wasn’t intentional, but he saw my browser and was like “Dear Wendy?” I was like “uhhh, yeah…that’s my advice site…” He knows I’m an advice junkie but doesn’t know how much time I spend on here.

So I showed him the Facepalm Friday letters and we had a good laugh. 🙂

After making my summer to do list, I decided that I am going to have a mini flower “garden” (aka a bunch of flower pots) on my deck this summer! I bought 4 packets of seeds today and will go to my parents’ house to steal a few of their bazillion pots and get some soil. I’m so excited. I’ve grown things in their garden before but I’ve never done something on my own!

Wendy I’m so glad you where able to reach the goal! I really think doing these drives yearly (or twice yearly even) are a great way to alleviate your financial stress/concerns.
    .
We’re not doing anything this weekend and I am pumped about it. We both have a TON of work to catch up on, and our apt needs a deep clean badly. So that’s all we’ve got on our radar. And naps.

You guys! Check out the thermometer in the corner! As I write this, we’ve raised over $7,150!! I originally put the goal at $7500, but yesterday I changed it to $7000 so we could all hopefully have the satisfaction of seeing the thermometer completely filled in. 245 people have donated and something like 70-ish signed up for automatic monthly payments. And around 15 people made donations of $100 or more, which kind of blows my mind. This has been so heartening for me — to think that I (hopefully) won’t have to worry about overhead costs for the site anymore — at least for the next year, probably — and could even have something like a small monthly income is pretty great. My goal was always to keep the site afloat and grow it at least moderately until Jackson is in kindergarten (or, if he has a sibling, when that child is in school) and then be drawing enough income from DW that “returning to work” would actually just mean investing more full-time like hours to the site (and related projects). Seeing how much support I have from you is the first time I’ve felt like that could be a reality eventually. Thank you all so much!!

Wendy, I’m so happy for you (and all of us really) – we gotta keep DW up. I feel so much wiser after reading this site the past 3 years. Also I had this deep thought: it’s impressive how many people donated and how many readers you have; but then when I visualize that many people in a room, and when I think about all the shit I’ve talked about – figuratively and literally – I think about saying all that in a room of hundreds of people and I cringe. It’s easier to share deep thoughts when all you have to do is hit SEND and then pretend no one will read it… Know what I mean? I mean, even what I just said here I don’t think I could say in a mic in front of 100s of people, except that’s kind of what I’m doing… Whoa.

Yayyy to all the donations!! Wendy is amazing!

I’ve mentioned a few times recently that I don’t know anything about make up, and a few DWers have pointed me in the direction of some helpful tutorials. I just bought a bunch of makeup to experiment with after watching some videos, and I think I successfully did it. I don’t even look like a clown! Seriously I’m so excited, and I wish I could remember who on here told me about Maskcara because I love that person forever. I feel so pretty!

I’m pretty much a beginner. I’ve owned eye shadows and things, but I’ve never really tried to master it… I just tried watching some YouTube videos and I think I may have achieved blending eye shadows! That’s an accomplishment for me.

That’s so far beyond anything I’ve ever done. That’s awesome! Good job! Basically tonight I learned how to use a tinted moisturizer, blush, bronzer, and concealer. Eye shadow seems really advanced.

It’s not super impressive, haha! I’ve owned the make up for a while just haven’t really gotten the hang of using it. I’m probably applying my BB Cream wrong, I take too quickly to apply most things, etc. I’m kind of going backwards because I’m mastering the eyes first and then worrying about BB cream, foundation, etc. I actually don’t own blush or bronzer because I don’t feel like I need it…but it’s on the list of things to master next. I’ve always coveted the well-blended eye shadow look and have been trying to master it for a long time. I usually end up looking ridiculously stupid because I have three distinctive lines of color, but I achieved a really natural look tonight!

Try a matte light beige/brown and a matte medium brown. Put the lighter shade above your eyelid, up to the brow bone. Put the medium shade in the crease / socket and sweep back and forth like a windshield wiper. Then whatever color you put on your lid, just go from lashes up to crease. You shouldn’t have any harsh lines that way.

It is hard to get it so you can see the makeup. The radioactive green doesn’t show up well in an iPhone pic, but here’s how she did my face to complement a slutty cheer uniform with tube socks and green stiletto sneaker boots.
