Weekend Open Thread

I snapped this picture this morning as Jackson and I were leaving our neighborhood playground, where I spend approximately 2/3 of my waking life and Jackson spends about 3/4 of his. The trees are blooming throughout Brooklyn and today was one of those perfect weather days β€” we get about 10 or 15 a year β€” where it wasn’t too hot or too cold or too rainy. The sun was shining and it was comfortable enough to wear pretty much whatever you wanted.

unnamed-1

May is shaping up to be a big birthday month. I celebrated the birthdays of three friends this week, including one house party, one cocktail party at a restaurant, and tonight I’m taking a friend to a new jazz club to celebrate her birthday. Monday is my mom’s birthday, holla, and I’ve just been invited to more friends’ birthday dinner/parties later this month. I guess I am fond of people born in May (and April). The rest of you are OK, too, I guess. I liked the outfit I wore last night so I took a dorky bathroom selfie which I am shamelessly posting, mostly because I want to recommend the skirt, which is seriously marked down at Anthropologie and works especially well for those of us with curvy hips and/or a squishy belly. It sucks everything in and is basically like wearing Spanx, but super cute, high-waisted shiny, camo-pattern. (I don’t get an affiliate commission on that or anything — I just really like the skirt and thought you should know about it).

Anyway, what else? We made it through Wedding Week! Hopefully most of you enjoyed it and those who didn’t can rest assured that I won’t put you through another week devoted to wedding content for a whole year. Now let’s all go pop some champagne and celebrate.

Also, waking up between 2am and 4am every night with mild symptoms of an oncoming panic attack (difficulty breathing, racing thoughts) is making me really look forward to a loungeabout tomorrow morning.

hey.. that was me the last two months. It will get better, i promise. Start journaling and be brutally honest with all the thoughts. It will come out and you will feel so much better that they aren’t swirling around in your head.

Sorry you’re having panic attacks! I’ve been having a rough week too, and though I’m not waking up with panic attacks, I’m just waking up with insomnia in the middle of the night. I feel your pain (kinda). Take a big ol nap tomorrow.

I’ve been having panic attacks as well, around changes I’m working on making in my life! My therapist and I were discussing it, and I think I’m going to try journaling when I’m feeling that overwhelmed feeling coming on. Anyways, I hope you feel better!

    Love the outfit Wendy!
    .
I bought my first ever pair of white jeans which I plan to wear this weekend. Boyfriend is a May birthday as well so we’re going out on Saturday to the bar within walking distance to my house (love my town!) and I’m just praying I don’t spill anything on my white jeans. My mother drilled it into my head to never wear white pants and it took me 34 years to be bold enough to do it!
    .
Also, I let my daughter stay up late last night (20 mins past her bedtime) to finish reading Harry Potter #6, and today I’m ordering pizza, so basically the Mommy of the Year award is in the bag.

Oh, good, then we won’t be all matchy-matchy. I’ve decided to start a new project by wearing white all the time, everywhere, while eating messy food, and then sell the resulting garments as art.

I’m getting brunch with @Banana and @Christy on Sunday! And I’m going to a BBQ on Saturday night. But right now I’m wrapping up Friday afternoon by playing possible father/daughter songs (oh you thought wedding week was over?) and I got all teary eyed at my desk. I’m not a daddy’s girl either, at all. I guess I’ll cheer myself up with some Miley.

LBH, I have a crying story for you! My Daddy (yup, I’m 44 & He’s still “DADDY”) who is a 40 year Marine Officer, veteran of 2 wars, cut short a bit our dance to “Always on My Mind” b/c he was getting weepy in his Dress Blues. BOOM! – Later everyone was kinda happy crying watching us sing karaoke together – (he had changed into his suit & I, into my evening gown) πŸ˜€

It’s so dumb for me because I was never a daddy’s girl and we’re not overly close. And it’s never been like I need his approval or he’s taking care of me until I get married or something. He knows I’m gonna do what I want or think is best. I think it’s just the wedding emotions.

I freaking love my dad, but I was never “Daddy’s little girl”. It just wasn’t my personality at all, and it still isn’t. But seeing him on my wedding day… uugh, even thinking about it now can make me cry. He was so happy and proud, and was on the verge of tears all day. It was just awesome. It meant a lot to him to walk me down the aisle (and it was a really memorable walk, too!), and to do that father/daughter dance was one of the highlights of his life, I think.

Happy birthday soon, Wendy’s Mom! It’s also…. wait for it… AP’s Half Birthday (in 22 days, but who’s counting down the days ’til a half birthday…)!
    *
I survived wedding week by just rolling my eyes at GG and TA. (Kidding, I didn’t see anything too decisive; but maybe I missed a fight somewhere? I’ve been busy this week so there you go.)
    *
I just had a 2 hour long lunch at this new restaurant in the Gold Coast called Nico and it was so Yummico. The bread had olives in it – I usually hate olives but this was so good – then we had a big ass bowl of fried fish and then I had a big ass bowl of more food and holy shit I’m about to shut my office door and take on the floor under my desk.
    *
In other news, I’m working on this REALLY AWESOME pro bono asylum case that I wish I could tell you all about but I can’t but it’s really sad but I’m really hopeful and I am really glad to be able to help on the case. Say what you will about big law – I’ve logged SO MANY pro bono hours.
    *
I saw Hateship Loveship yesterday starring Kristen Wiig – it’s a low budget film that was so good and soooo awkward! and it also included Jennifer Jason Leigh who … who looks just as she did in Fast Times but also completely different (that was a very profound statement).
    *
I also saw and just reviewed a documentary called Finding Vivian Maier that I really recommend!
    *
Um, what else? I want to keep talking to avoid getting back to work. So quick ask me a question that I’ll need to spend a lot of time responding to… Anyone? Anyone?

I usually hate olives though; I think the only reason I was able to enjoy the olive bread was because I’m all stuffy so can’t taste anything. So I guess my review of Nico should be taken with a grain of salt. Also, can I just say I hate pretentious restaurants that don’t put salt on the table? I’m sorry, I like to over salt my food and I’d like to do that without having to ask for salt and indure the “oh you don’t really need it” stare, thank you. (This restaurant had no salt – but oh mon dieux that fried fish was to die for.)

Addie!!! I love you…. I just had to smile at the salt thing – My very very favorite sister salts All.The.Things! I started a joke in our family – once when we were all out to supper she asked for the salt & I unscrewed the lid then handed both to her & said, make sure you leave some – (I dunno – I’ve had a couple rums & want to be part of the conversations) – carry on

Well, today was my last day of sitting in a classroom for classes. Basically ever. One final done, I have 4 more next week. Then a week off. Then I start my clinical rotations. Which reminds me I need to post a question about things to do on one of my traveling rotations…

I am now the happy owner of 6 Jumbo Pekin ducklings and 8 Broad Breasted Bronze turkey poults. And I saved a poult from dying yesterday… so maybe I can be a veterinarian after all! I found him pinned against the waterer underneath all his siblings soaking wet and in the belly flop position. He must have been there at least an hour. So I blow dried him off and then kind of held his legs in place underneath him under a heat lamp because they were basically cramped behind him. Then I gave him some electrolytes with a syringe. And now he’s almost back to normal (he has a little head shake, not sure what that’s about) and gets to be back with his little friends. Hooray!

I can’t wait for rhubarb. And I can’t wait to be done with finals. And I can’t wait to watch more Downton Abbey. The end.

Llama Guy and I are signing the lease on an amazing townhouse in a few hours! I’m going to be living with a boy for the first time ever in less than two weeks! I’m so glad we’re living together before we get married because a lot of stuff came up in the past few months that wasn’t covered by the premarital counseling books we read and that had the potential to really damage our relationship. Like, it’s really easy to talk about how you want to spend money in the abstract, but shit gets real when your leases are almost up and you haven’t found a place to live yet and you have to start making compromises in terms of location, size, and cost. And it’s easy to talk about your shared goals and how you want the same thing, but then you realize that you might have different ideas of how to reach those goals. I’m rambling and fortunately Llama Guy and I discovered that we are on the same page about everything, I just can’t imagine not working this kind of stuff out before legally binding myself to someone. I know cohabitation isn’t for everyone but I’m really, really glad we’re doing it.

I’m glad we made it through wedding week! I enjoyed all of it — it makes me feel sane. My own wedding planning is boring in comparison. BUT I agreed to be in my cousin’s wedding, which is … frustrating. We talked a few weeks ago about both of us starting to lose weight for our respective weddings. (But hers is a year before mine, so ….?) We were ordering our bridesmaid dresses last week, & I decided to order one a size smaller than I measured that morning. She asked me to order a size larger because “I don’t want to get the dress & it doesn’t fit, & do you really think you can get there in such a short time?”

So I’m grumpy. And fat. And so my plan this weekend is to start my workouts again. I’m determined to have to take in that stupid giant dress lol.

I had a sex dream with my work crush! Probably because on wednesday he told me he’s leaving for another company on monday. I’ll miss hearing his frustrated sighs next to me and getting all worked up and sweaty in my desk. And I know he’ll miss mine. We might have sort of sighed and grunted a bit too much on purpose.
He’s got a GF, so I never did anything, but it was pretty obvious that the attraction was there. I’m glad that he didn’t do anything either (well, apart from grunting sexily a bit), I hate it when men I like end up being pigs to their GF’s.
In the dream we were working and I asked him for help and he came sit next to me and we started kissing and decided to get a hotel room for our lunch break. We were on the bed, taking our clothes off, and I realized I wanted to pee very badly, but the room he had picked was a bed behind a courtain in the corner and didn’t have a bathroom! So I had to leave and had to move through some terribly frightening corridors to get to the bathroom, thinking “jesus, what a cheap asshole. I can’t believe he brought me here. That’s what I get for not coordinating this myself”.
And when I finally returned to bed and was taking my clothes off I woke up because I really needed to pee =(
And now I’m never going to see him again! But I’ll stalk his FB forever and if he’s ever single again I’ll ask him out.

YOU GUYZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, I have a problem. I have a crush on a coworker who has a girlfriend. At first it was no big deal but now oh my god he comes into my office like 10 times a day and he flirts and flirts and flirts. And if he doesn’t stop in and flirt, he just walks by but not without flicking a rubber band at me. It’s SOOOO JUNIOR HIGH UP IN HERE. But as time goes on I start to find him more and more adorable and …. and it would just be so nice if he didn’t have a girlfriend. It’s not fair. That’s all. Carry on.

See the comment right above yours: OH I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL.

I say poison the GF so he doesn’t give you a chance to see him disrespect her by flirting with you, and take it from there.

Yes I got some down thumbs! I kinda left that vague on purpose, to see how many I’d get and it’s only 3??? That’s lower than the number of boyfriend I’ve stolen! Jeez.

Anyway, last time I did that I was a teenager, learned my lesson. And only helped one guy cheat, that part of it was definitely not worth it.

ADDIE. I interviewed at a “Big Firm” today. So weird. The billables requirement is 2000. Will that physically kill me? (I have a lot of hobbies, and I really like happy hour, and working out, and Sampson, and banging). Imma call you later about it. And also not to brag, but if there was ever a niche big firm associate position that I was perfect for it would be this. It’s like I gave birth to all of my skills and experience all over the application.

Hey congrats! 2,000 hours a year is doable but depending on the type of work you’ll be doing could be hard. That would be hard for me b/c my practice is like 0.2 here, 0.3 there, 0.1 there – I will bill to 10 different matters in a day. Large pieces of litigation where those jerks can come in at 8 and leave at 6 and slap down 10.0 make me so…. jealous. Not that I’d want to do large litigation. But you get it. I billed 2500 one year *and* took 5 weeks of vacation that year and it about killed me. Some attorneys I know regularly bill 2500+ a year; they most be robots.

Ramona would keep the inappropriate flirting confined to the neighborhood, me thinks. And for the record it’s not FLIRTY FLIRTING, if that makes sense. It’s teasing, paying attention to details, asking questions, getting to know you type questions, just sort of thinking of things to say, more teasing, rubber band shooting, asking for candy, sharing candy, sharing links to favorite songs, etc. Is that flirting? It’s not like “oh hey baby you look fiiiiine” flirting.

Hmmm, yeah, I know what you mean. That definitely sounds junior high! πŸ˜› Does he do this to other people? It reminds me of when you’re little and a boy would like, tease you or make fun of you, and then your mom would say, “that’s because he likes you!” (Huh??)
I would probably tease him in return and say stuff like, “awww, you really like me don’t you!” or something like that. I dunno.

This weekend is our first anniversary. We’re not doing anything special. I’m doing something that he wants to do to make him happy, but really I just want to clean house because it’s a fucking disaster. Hopefully it will be fun anyway.

In other news, I’m still loving my new job, but I’m experiencing some very unique types of stress. The theme of my week has been learning how high risk every single decision I make at work really is. It’s very interesting so far.

Tonight is Lyra night. I’m sitting at home with my cat just doing whatever the heck I want to and it’s awesome. It was a good week overall — it’s hard to believe how FAST it went! Heck it’s hard to believe how fast this entire year is going. I’m dreaming of summer vacation, but at the same time I’m not sure what I’m doing for work over summer yet so I’m kind of (read: VERY) nervous about it. I need to fund my summer plans.
    .
Tomorrow I’m meeting DWer Cassie for coffee! It’s gonna be great. Then, off to visit Navy Guy who is all stressed over finals. He seems super stressed out and even though he volunteered to come and visit me again I told him I would make the trek to see him since he’s so busy this coming week. I’m trying to make visits more fair — he visits me a LOT more often for a few reasons — because of my cat and because there’s a lot more to do where I am than where he is.
    .
Sunday morning/early afternoon will be spent with Navy Guy but after that it will probably be another day to refresh a little bit and get a lot of work stuff done. Lots to do, too little time to do it.

Happy weekend! I started my new job on Thursday, though the first 2 days have been spent doing more paperwork than actual work work. I think this job will be better for me than my last one, and that I’ll maybe have more freedom. I just have to get my shit together and take advantage of it.

I think we may meet up with friends who happen to be in town this weekend. Other than that, probably just relaxing. We can explore more once we get paychecks, haha.

I have one more Wedding Week dilemma! It is another “plus one” question so hopefully it doesn’t start something…
So, my boyfriend and I have been together for six years and currently live together. One of his best friends from back home is getting married this summer, in their hometown (about 1,000 miles away). He got the invitation in the mail this last week addressed to him only. Now, to me, it is pretty clear that I’m not invited and I’m okay with that, but just surprised for a couple reasons. I’ve been back to my bf’s hometown at least once a year and have met this friend on multiple occasions. The wedding is also in his fiancΓ©e’s parents’ backyard and then the reception is (GASP!) a potluck dinner with a pig roast at the local veterans’ hall, which makes us think that I wasn’t left of the invite for cost-saving purposes or to fit any space issues.
So, what to do? Obviously, to me, the answer is to do nothing and to feel it out as the issue gets closer. I’m still going to go with my boyfriend to visit his family and everything but I guess we’ll just see as it gets closer if the invite was meant to include me or not. I really want to go because I love weddings! But, yeah, I obviously understand that I wasn’t invited. I think my boyfriend is more hurt than I am because even though he’ll know pretty much everyone there, he wants me to be able to go too.

That’s so weird! I mentioned this in the Shortcuts yesterday but “simple” outdoor weddings can be surprisingly complicated. My fiance and I are opting for a backyard wedding and reception at his mom’s house this fall because we thought it’d be inexpensive, laid back, and so easy, and it’s definitely turned out to be an inexpensive option. But we’re still having to worry about parking for the guests and rain contingency plans (do we want to rent tents in case of bad weather or can we fit everyone inside his mom’s house?), and, aside from the logistics, we really want to keep the guest list small and intimate. But we’re keeping our guest list to just family and close family friends – I couldn’t imagine inviting our friends but not their significant others! I’d do what you’re doing and just assume I wasn’t invited, but hopefully it was a misunderstanding.

Thanks! Yeah, your last bit is exactly what I think we’ll do. It’s just weird because I’d think I’d be invited but then wasn’t and think it is a misunderstanding, but I guess everyone in this position thinks it’s an accidental oversight, but who knows? Holy run on sentence!

        .
Ella, you’re name isn’t on the invitation, it’s pretty clear you’re not invited, for what ever reason. So I wouldn’t say anything and carry on as you described. (At least this way you won’t have to make a dish?)

Geez just have him ask. This is one of his best friends, you say? Super easy- “hey, the invite was just to me, which usually means that only that person is invited… So Ella won’t be coming, right? Just wanted to make sure because invites are confusing!”.
      .
I’ve only been to a few weddings and all the invites and RSVPs have been different. Just ask.

I agree with Katie, ask. It’s entirely possible that the groom gave the guest list from his side and is unaware of these etiquette rules, so didn’t think to include his friend’s longtime significant other. I’m pretty sure that unless I had discussed something like this with Bassanio or we hadn’t been together long enough that this topic has come up, he wouldn’t think about that stuff. So I think it’s worth mentioning, being like, it’s no big deal if there isn’t room or something but…
