Weekend Open Thread

Screen Shot 2014-05-14 at 3.28.36 PM

Happy Friday, everyone!

I took this photo of Jackson and me in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on our way to gardening class Wednesday morning. I was trying to get some of the beautiful flowers in bloom in the shot, but I obviously failed. I did succeed, however, in highlighting our matching shirts. As I mentioned on Facebook and Instagram, one of the unexpected surprises (I guess all surprises are unexpected though?) of parenthood is how often I accidentally dress Jackson and myself in matching or color-coordinated outfits (and this happens even more frequently for Drew). I don’t even realize I’ve done this until we’re already out the door and well on our way to wherever we’re going, and then it just seems silly to turn back and go home to change. It’s always a little embarrassing though when people point out, “Oh! You guys match!” I always respond, “I didn’t mean it!” (And I know from talking to other parents that this is a “thing,” so those of you expecting your first baby, consider yourselves warned. You WILL start dressing like your kid, whether you mean to or not.).

Anyhoo, this week I have been busy working on getting together samples of stuff to offer in upcoming promotional give-aways. (Also, if you’re someone whom I’ve contacted about getting a give-away, please excuse the delay; I’m still gathering items to send your way). If you didn’t see my post in the forums about this topic, I’d love if you’d share your thoughts about what sort of DW merchandise you’d be happy to receive in a give-away some time. I may be offering some of the items for sale as well, if there’s enough interest. Thank you!

I’m going to cut this short because Jackson is actually napping for a change (only the second nap in a week) and I want to take advantage of the time and get a column or two written for next week. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

P.S. The ModCloth sale I posted about the other day has been extended through 5/19, so you still have time to save 25%!

It’s been a seriously weepy week. Most of you now know what’s been going on (thank you deleted thread! I needed you!), but I finally talked to a lawyer today. It will be a fairly easy legal process and not too $$, but admitting the failure is very hard. Therapy tonight followed by stuff-yo-face-wit-pasta with the beautiful AP.

And don’t think of it as failure. It just didn’t work out. You didn’t fail. He didn’t fail. It just didn’t work.

But, really, I’m sorry for what you’re going through. I know it must suck.

To prepare myself for all the pasta and wine we are going to consume, I ate a salad for lunch. It needed croutons but it didn’t have any but – oh good news – I had a bag of cheetos in my desk so I poured cheetos on my salad. It was genius!

MG, I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this. I get what you mean about the feelings of failure, been there, but trust me when I say you’ll look back someday and marvel at all of the things you’ve learned since then and you’ll be absolutely thrilled with the person you’ve grown into since then. Hugs.

I am so excited for this weekend! I have been out of town a couple times in the last three weeks and need to get organized and go grocery shopping and do laundry, etc (all very exciting!). But tomorrow night, my boyfriend’s sister and her boyfriend are coming over for dinner, and tonight we’re going out to dinner in the neighborhood we want to move later this summer. So, lots of planned relaxing!

I’m finishing unpacking and will be officially moved in today! I’m so excited. I’m also excited because the falling apart that my body has been doing (migraine last night/today, uti, cramps, achy back, weird ankle pain) seems to piecing itself back together…just in time for the weekend! Job searching is still eating my soul, but I’m trying to enjoy moving in and this upcoming weekend!

We’re going to dinner at a friend’s house tonight, which should be fun. They said we should bring Rudy, since they have a dog. I’m happy to bring him with us, because I hate being away from him all day for work, and then leaving him at night, too, but I’m anxious about how he’ll behave over there. He’s still so young and pretty excitable. I just hope he’s a good boy and doesn’t jump all over them! He hasn’t met a dog he didn’t like so far, but their dog is a little finicky with people (he bit my boob once!), so hopefully he likes Rudy.

That must have hurt like crazy but the phrase “he bit my boob” makes me laugh a little too much. I get the apprehension though, my dog growled at a baby once like 3 days after I adopted her from the shelter, and even though that was 5+ years ago and she was young and scared in a new environment, I’m still terrified she’s going to eat someone’s baby.

It was a little Rat Terrier type dog, so the bite didn’t hurt that much. I was mostly shocked that it happened, because he jumped up on my lap and seemed to be happy! Then he just bit me! Our friends were mortified that it happened, so I guess if Rudy’s bad they’ll probably be really nice about it.

Stuff like that kind irritates me (as the owner of a medium sized dog). If my dog bit someone’s boob, it would be a pretty big deal!! I feel like little dogs get away with more due to their size. My old neighbors had this horribly mean Chihuahua who bit my daughter once, and they just laughed it off, because how could such a small dog be vicious, amiright? Anyway! I’m sorry about your boob and I’m sure Rudy has as close to carte blanche as he’s ever going to get, since I’m sure your friends still feel terrible about the bite.
        .
If you have time, can you run Rudy around the block a few times so he can burn off some energy before going over?

It’s POURING here, and he refuses to walk in the rain. Also, it takes a good day or 2 for long runs to catch up with him! But I feel you about the bog dog/little dog thing. Rudy’s a Pit/Boxer mix, so if something ever happened, I’m sure that would be used against him, whereas if it were a little dog, it wouldn’t be a big deal at all.

We’ve taken him to my BIL and MIL’s houses (they both have dogs) and he’s been fine, so hopefully everything goes smoothly!

Hi! I think we are going to get a Deering Goodtime banjo! It does have a resonator. I didn’t realize you can take off the resonator, so we can remove it if it gets too loud and the neighbors complain. I want to play Scruggs style, so I’m looking for a teacher who specializes in that. I just watched a video of Dolly Parton playing clawhammer style!

Hey! I have a Deering Gootime banjo! But without the resonator. It’s a really good choice!! The price is reasonable, and it has a really great sound. I’ve had mine since 2009, and I’d loooove to upgrade, but as I said above, the next level up of banjo gets really pricey. The place I took lessons at was at a store (banjos, guitars, uke’s, only!), and my teacher would let me pick out whatever banjo I wanted on display and play it during my lesson. Wow, there are some really nice ones with amazing, rich sound.
        This one is mine: http://www.deeringbanjos.com/collections/goodtime-banjos/products/goodtime-banjo
Except, I actually paid less than list price!
I don’t play Scruggs style (someday maybe!), but I do love playing clawhammer. There’s a great youtube duo that play all old time songs on guitar and banjo. Not Scruggs style, but they play all the old Appalachian tunes that you’d hear at a square dance. And I know a number of them! So it’s fun to watch the video and play along. (or try, anyway.)
This one’s one of my favorites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-mfNP1fHmU

Moneypenny!! That is the exact banjo we are getting! I didn’t realize how expensive banjos are – we definitey played around with some of the more expensive ones just for fun. He Pants has played the guitar (also, uke and mandolin) since he was little, so it was helpful to have him with me and he really likes the Goodtime. We thought about getting an Ibanez, but the Goodtime sounded a lot better and wasn’t as heavy.

I have been watching banjo players ALL WEEK. Work blocks YouTube, but I will definitely check out your links when I get home! Have you seen the videos of the three brothers? I’m completely forgetting their names, but one plays the banjo, one plays the fiddle, and the third plays guitar. I love them.

Y’all, my boyfriend took the entire afternoon off to volunteer at my daughter’s field day. He didn’t get to eat lunch and was outside for 3 hours helping kids in grades 3-5 play tug-of-war on a muddy field. Then he signed my daughter out of school early and took her home so that I can get a wax on the way home from work. In return I am bringing him Chipotle for dinner but it just feels so uneven. What else can I do for him other than the obvious sexy stuff?!? I need ideas!

My parents sometimes end up dressing alike, much to my mom’s dismay. She’ll usually get dressed first, let’s say in a pink shirt. Then my dad, not paying any attention, will put on a pink shirt too. Then I see them together, and I tease them, in a nice way (like, “aww, that’s so cute!”).

Othello and I accidentally match all of the time. It’s embarrassing. It’s gotten to the point on weekends that whoever gets dress first gets ‘dibs’ on their outfit, and the other one has to dress in something that doesn’t match. I guess this is what happens when you have similar fashion taste?

This weekend is Part 2 of “Operation Porch.” Last weekend I bought two colorful lounge chairs from CB2, fake grass, and planters, and bright pink plastic flamingos and other kitschy accessories for my porch. It’s lookin’ really fly. This weekend I need to buy a table and a plant and some flowers and I’ll be all done. My threshold for shopping is SOOO low though that that is all I’ll have in me to do this weekend. Then we move on to other stuff, like TV console, bar stools, entry table, guest room furniture, bedding, etc. It’s fun but it makes me anxious, I fucking hate shopping so bad I wish I had a personal shopper to do all of this. The problem is I’m picky about the items I purchase, I just don’t want to have to shop for it.

Ok it’s been so long but here I can remember: After Chicago I went to a bar and celebrated with friends. I remember there was no place to sit so I sat on a pool table. Then i drove home back to missouri that night with my parents (I was living in MO at the time). After New York and I had to fly home b/c I had work the next day. After San Diego I … I think I drank at my brother’s and flew home the next day. In all three experiences: immediately after the marathon was fine but the next couple of days it was hard to walk.

That’s what I’ve heard. As long as I get through the marathon I will suffer the consequences later… preferably onset consequences at least the next day. I have to go to court on Monday too, and I’ve heard there can be considerable swelling, so I hope my suit still fits, it’s a little tight as it is because of um, burritos. I successfully gained 6 pounds from the day I started training for the marathon, haha.

Ooh ooh! And I had my evaluation with my OB clinical instructor today, and she BASICALLY told me I’m her favorite. She gave me a perfect score and wrote in the eval (that goes to the director of the accelerated program) that she can’t wait for me to join the women’s health grad program, AND she said she would write me a letter of rec! She said she can tell I am totally made for women’s health. I feel so… so… VALIDATED hahah.
      .
This is especially interesting because she is very Catholic and anti-birth control (she gave us a handout about how it’s unnatural and unhealthy and goes against God’s will), while I presented a research article on how awesome IUDs are and I talk about STIs all the time. She kind of made a comment about how we have different “philosophies” but she doesn’t care at all. She teaches a class about natural family planning, so I learned quite a bit about it. I noticed on the deleted thread that some DWers have questions about it, so message me on FB or something if you have questions; I *might* be able to answer them for you!

Very cool! I used natural family planning from when I was engaged up until I started trying with E. It worked for us for 1.5 years! I wouldn’t recommend it though unless you are somewhat okay with the chance of getting pregnant. I am really glad that I did it because I became really in tune with my body and that is cool!

Wait! I’m going to add one more thing to my braggy McBraggy thread –
        .
My belly dance class and teacher have agreed that we will dance to Mr. Roboto for the Geek Show in August! It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a couple years and I’ve finally got everyone on board, haha. IT’S A BIG DEAL I SWEAR.

I’m still so undecided on my stance on birth control. I think I will use it in some way because I don’t really believe the church’s stance is valid, but I’m not sure what I would do. Like it just seems so complicated to me and there’s so much to learn. I don’t want to go on pills because I’ve heard the horror stories. My parents used natural family planning and that worked for them. I like the concept of it, but I don’t want an unexpected pregnancy either. I’ve learned a lot just by reading DW all day every day, but it’s overwhelming to me in a way.
        .
Once I get engaged/married and decide to have sexy sex I’ll probably post a bazillion questions for you guys to answer haha.

just remember there are like a million different pills, all with different hormone combinations. there are very few women who cannot have any pills. and, its just like any other medication. all medications cause bad reactions in a small subset of people, and those people then shouldn’t take them.
        .
also maybe male birth control will be a thing soon and you won’t even have to worry about it! i love my iud with the burning of a thousand suns so I’m set- but when i was on the pill i was mad there was no male birth control.

I’ll help you when the time comes!
        .
Honestly, I wouldn’t trust the natural family planning method 100% by itself. If you’re not ready for an “accidental” pregnancy, then I’d do something else in addition (even if it’s just pulling out and avoiding sex during fertile times). My instructor who teaches the class has EIGHT kids, so I kinda wonder how effective it actually is, haha.
        .
Anyway, I’ve been on the pill for over 10 years and I’ve never had any issues whatsoever. Lots of people do, though. But there are SO MANY birth control options available that I believe there has to be something that works for every couple out there. What you choose just depends on your tolerance to hormones and personal/religious beliefs.

I need to go off the pill at some point, I’ve been on for too long. But I couldn’t have lasted much longer without it as a teen. I’m glad my sister pressured my mom to forget the church’s stance and get me some hormones since it was all off for me. I couldn’t sleep, it was super heavy, etc. I’ve been so worried about that I haven’t gone off it yet (and now I have sexy times so it does some other good too). I’ve heard that it’s lessens as you get older but I’m not looking forward to finding out. I think this summer I will talk to my doctor about other options.

Wedding dress shopping weekend. Not for me. Thank goodness. For my sis. My mom and other sis are coming via Amtrak tonight. Then tomorrow, it’s breakfast at my new favorite spot. 1st bridal store. Bridesmaid store. Snack. 2nd bridal store. Then dinner at Melting Pot, which I hate buy my engaged sis wanted it so I didn’t even complain like I normally would have. It’s her day after all. I even made all appointments and food reservations for her because she doesn’t like that sort of thing. Should be a good weekend.

I don’t have a whole lot going on this weekend. Work today, work tomorrow, off Sunday. I’m pretty broke this week and have to wait until next Friday for a pay. It’s killing me because I basically have to re-build my savings after self-employment taxes hurt me. Basically, before my company was bought last year, I was a contractor for a while and didn’t really know that I had to set aside money for quarterly taxes. I am now an employee of the company that bought us, so I don’t have to worry about that anymore. I feel bad for not knowing better, but let’s just say that if I ever become a full-time freelancer, I will not let this happen again.

I have a lot of good things going on and was going to post a forum thread about it. In summary, it involves some work and personal stuff.

And oh, I started a blog! I’ve gotten about 100 views since it went up. I think a lot of them are coming from people who already know me but that’s OK. Start small!

Somehow I decided to start watching Ugly Betty from the beginning. I don’t know. It sounded like a good idea and now I’m sucked in. Best moment of the day was coming home and finding dark chocolate in my bag I forgot about. No wine for me because of the crazy dose of antibiotics (they make me dizzy, who knew antibiotics could do this, my dr wasn’t surprised) and alcohol is a no no. My dogs are acting pitiful because I worked all day today for the first time. And they want to be outside all the time but the pollen is killing me (literally I feel like) I need to find someone to come play with them outside for me.

    .
I’m on the home stretch of the end of the school year and it feels really great. I’ve had a fun year this year, and I’m looking forward to staying in the same schools next year. The stressful part has been trying to find a summer job. I’m piecing together a job with a bazillion part time things and that’s cool. Marching band stuff here, lessons there. I just want to know I can support myself for the summer and I need more work for that to be the case. I just signed up for sittercity and care.com so hopefully I’ll find some stuff there too.

    .
My stomach is all fucked up. But a week of vacation, then another long weekend of vacation, two weddings, enough drinking to kill a horse, not sleeping well at all, and then having to eat out while I’m traveling for work -which is my life for the past four weeks- will do that I guess. I’m tempted to go buy a cheap blender and that special vegan protein powder from whole foods and just not eat solid foods for a few weeks.

Yesterday I bought this flowery black and white thing that could be pants but could also be not quite pants and I’m wearing it in front of the mirror trying to decide if I should behave and wear a skirt over them or just Ramona the fuck up and take them for a spin around the neighborhood.

A very short spin, since I’m training tomorrow, and I have to be at the fire department early. So I’ll go get some sushi and eat it reading in bed.

I really like my flowery black and white thing. It’s kinda tight and stretches a bit and slightly changes color in the rounder areas (points for not pants) but I haven’t waxed in a long time and the part right over the bush is not darker or bulky in any way (points for pants). So… vote! Are these pants? Does it even matter?

Here’s my view on dressing like your kid: if I were deciding on two outfits daily, I would pick similar stuff most of the time. Some days it feels like a green and white floral print with black accessories kind of day, and if I were dressing anyone else, it would be green and white with black as well (though I might not dress my son in florals unless he wanted it). Other days, it might feel like blue and white stripes. And anyone I had to dress would also be in blue and white stripes. So you dress like your kid because you dress your kid and you dress yourself.
    .
In other news, I got into a screaming match with one of my teammates on Wednesday, and we are still rather angry with each other. I don’t think it helps that my captain (who is a very good friend) and my co-captain both sided with me. Basically she told me I shouldn’t play in x situation because I’m still a target for getting picked off…which is true, except non-game scenarios are EXACTLY when I need to do that because I’m getting better at learning how to prevent that from happening. Anyway, it got heated, and Captain may or may not have called her a cunt…and I think if it hadn’t been three and a half weeks till the end of school, I probably would have just rolled my eyes, double checked with Captain, and done whatever the hell I wanted. Whatever. She’ll get over it. It probably didn’t help that I skated our half-marathon last night with Captain the entire time, and she may have felt like we were bitching about her (which we did, but for maybe five minutes). It’s fine – I’ll take her out for drinks next week and make it up to her.
    .
In other news, I get to go see a bout tomorrow night that I’m not playing in, for another league. One of the games involves a good friend from high school (oddly – we graduated from high school on the other side of the state), and the other game involves the wife of a friend and two of my derby friends, so I’m trying to coordinate the best possible outfit using all of their colors (black and red, and black and white). Because, you know, I’m a huge nerd. I’m going with my mom, and we’re meeting up with a couple of my league mates, as well as the guy whose wife is playing in the second game. I love playing, but it’s been a long time since I’ve just watched, at least not without knowing I was playing next. So I’m really looking forward to it 🙂
