Weekend Open Thread: Black Friday

This is one of my favorite photos ever. It was taken at a Bar Mitzvah a couple weeks back. I want it to be the cover of Jackson’s future memoir which will include stories about the neurotic shit his mom pulled when he was a kid. He will, no doubt, have to make those stories up since I never do anything neurotic, ever.

Anyhoo, happy Black Friday to those who observe this sacred occasion. Did any of you actually go shop? I saw some photos of people camped out in front of stores as early as Monday, which seems awfully extreme to me. Did they miss four days of work to save $45 on a TV at Best Buy? Or what? I have never done the Black Friday thing so I don’t really know how it works. I do enjoy Cyber Monday, which has now become something more like Cyber Last Two Weeks of November. Which reminds me, I got an email that the place where I order my bras is having a site-wide 25% off sale so I better stock up on my bras while I can. When you have big boobs like mine, your bras can set you back a hundred bucks or more. You think boob support is cheap? Nope, think again. I envy you ladies who can throw on a $20 bra from Target and call it a day.

What else? We had a nice Thanksgiving. I squeezed in a short bike ride in the morning before we headed to my father-in-law’s in the city. We get our whole meal catered from a Manhattan grocery chain — much easier than trying to cook in my FIL’s tiny, boiling hot kitchen — but I still made a spinach and cheese casserole that I brought over. My BIL and SIL brought the pies, and we all had a delicious meal. Jackson may have eaten more than all of us. I was hoping a turkey coma might make him sleep in this morning, but, alas, he was wide awake a little after 5. Do you know, I don’t think I’ve slept in past, like, 6:30 for over a year? What I would give for a leisurely morning like I used to have. Just one. I’d be happy with even one.

So. Happy weekend everyone. Go crazy.

I feel the exact same way about bras. My last bra cost me $150 plus the gas it cost to drive across the city to the speciatyl bra shop that carries my cup size. Not only do I have a stupidly large cup size, my back is really small so that makes it even harder to find a bra that fits. Sigh. I too wish I could just grab a bra out of the sale bin and go.

Also, I think every parent I’ve ever known wishes their kid would sleep in a little longer. I remember when my best friend texted me with such excitement because her toddler let her sleep in til 7!

I have the exact same problem, small back, big boobs! Don’t you guys have a version of brastop.com? It has changed my hatred of bra shopping forever, they specifically stock larger cup sizes but also cater to those of us with small back sizes too. I’m sure I’ve seen them advertise free international shipping from time to time, might be worth your while checking it out. Sounds like even paying for shipping would cost you less. $150 for 1 bra shopping trip seems really expensive when you only get one

Wendy, which site do you buy your bras from? I’m in desperate need of a new sports bra, and I can’t find anything that accommodates anyone bigger than a DD (especially ones in the band size that I need.)

I’m thinking about just biting the bullet and having one custom made (Lord help me, I really REALLY do not want that)

I buy bras from Bar Necessities because they carry large sizes and often have great deals. There’s a lingerie shop a couple miles from my place that specializes in nursing bras and harder-to-fit women, so I occasionally get fitted there, buy a bra, and then go to BN and see if I can find whatever bra I just bought or tried on for a cheaper price. Right now, my favorite brands are Chantelle and Le Mystere.

      To call-me-hobo:
there are lots of DD+ bloggers who blog about bras including reviews, including sports bra reviews, and several online shopping sites, like the one Wendy mentioned, also http://www.herroom.com has a LOT of DD+ bras, and there are good fitting sports bras for DD+ women. You don’t need to get a sports bra custom made!! It really bothers me that the word is not out yet that sports bras and pretty bras and pretty sports bras exist for DD+ women.

I kind of love the action-y shot pictures best. This picture just looks like you guys have fun together.
And um…what bra shop was that exactly? And do they ship to Canada? My friend used to tell me she would never spend more than $30 on a bra and almost cried for me when I told her the taxes were about that for me.
And whatever Black Friday – I finished shopping for my husband!!! So happy. I bought him a motorcycle ambulance in Africa (that really isn’t for him but he can at least feel good about it), a waterproof driving hat he wanted for Christmas (in keeping with the vehicular theme) and Audi leather driving gloves for our anniversary right after Christmas – which I now have to launch a covert style campaign with a friend in the States to get them shipped to her (since Audi doesn’t ship to Canada) and then shipped to me…all without him knowing…My mom I bought for already and the nieces and nephews are books and gift cards. My husband is always hell to buy for so yay – all done the hard part!

So you have the same problem as me, eh?? It’s really not cool how much our bras cost. And bra shopping is the one thing I’m afraid to do online, because depending on the bra style I vary between F cup all the way to H cup, and back size between 32 to 34.

As I said above, I will go to a specialty lingerie shop, get fitted, try on lots of different styles, buy one bra since that’s the right thing to do, and then go to Bare Necessities, which has a wide assortment of brands and sizes, and see if they are having any great sales which they often are.

Yeah, I was a 32 G/H before becoming pregnant and it sucks buying bigger bras. I live in a capital city in Canada and there is ONE store that sells my size. Last time I went they had 2 bras in the entire store that fit me. I do the same thing as Wendy, but I usually order off of breakout bras.com They ship to Canada and I haven’t had a problem with them at all. I do find that certain brands tend to fit individual women as well. Almost all of my bras are Fantasie.

Love that picture Wendy. You all look so joyful.

We greatly enjoyed out little quiet Thanksgiving with just the two of us (well three if you include the cat!). Football on the tv all day, great local beer, tipsy turkey, an hour FaceTime chat with the family. Just about perfect. We tried to Black Friday shop today but it sucked. We mapped out all of the gifts we’re getting everyone last week, none of which were on sale today (and most are online anyways). Tonight I’m attempting to make a Christmas tree skirt and a table runner with my new sewing machine. Should be interesting!

I have the same problem with buying bras !! My boobs make buying tops and dresses difficult because they are larger than the rest of my upper body. Thank you for the website link, Wendy. I will take a peek and see what I can find. Lately, I have found the Body by Victoria full coverage bra to be comfortable and pretty. Wendy, you had mentioned that you had breast reduction surgery in a previous post. Any tips or advice for someone that is considering it? Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday !!

Well, I had my surgery back in 1996, so I’m sure some things have changed since then. Some things that will never change: research surgeons; ask to see before and after photos; see what you insurance will cover; consider all the potential consequences (loss of sensitivity, breastfeeding issues, surgery complications, scars, you aren’t satisfied with the results) before making a decision to go through with it.

I don’t know if this was available when you had yours done, Wendy, but at least where I am you can get liposuction on your boobs. There is no scarring or issues such as loss of nipple sensitivity or reduced ability to breastfeed. You can only get it done if your breasts are mostly fat vs breast tissue and if you gain weight/get pregnant they will grow back. I’m getting it done after I’m finished having kids and I almost cannot wait. It would be nice to find a bathing suit that doesn’t make me look like a hooker. I wear sports bras swimming!

We went to Target and Macy’s last night. My sister had a baby on Halloween (!), so between my new niece and my friend’s 1-year-old, I have so much baby girl shopping to do. I stocked up on $3 tutus, cheap baby toys, and bought myself a bunch of suit separates and some cheap k-cups for our apartment.

I did a lot of online shopping today and picked up 20% off gift cards from the local bottle shop/pizza place that we love, for us.

I braved Black Friday shopping today but only after the crazy people were home sleeping. I went around 9 with my friend. I went with the mindset that since I don’t have a boyfriend and boyfriend’s family to buy for this holiday season, I was going to spend it all on myself. And I did. It felt GREAT. I got a ring to replace the one he had given me, a BUNCH of movies (including Magic Mike…which I haven’t seen yet…but will probably start tonight… 🙂 ), some new art to go on my walls at my house, a new scarf, and some other stuff. Basically, if I wanted it, I bought it. I rarely do that — I used to when I was young but since I’m poor I’ve stopped. It felt good to spend time with friends and do whatever the hell I felt like. My best friend finally heard the entire breakup story today and at the end she looks at me and says with a completely serious face: “it’s a good thing he lives all the way out in North Dakota because otherwise I would kick his ass”. And she could if she really wanted to. Tomorrow I’ll be seeing a college friend and some more of my high school friends. I’m realizing more and more just how much I love home. I don’t want to have to drive back on Sunday, but it will be less than a month and I’ll be back here again. The rest of the school year I’m going to put everything I’ve got into my work and into bettering me. I hope doing things for me and only me will help me focus my energy onto something positive. My goals are mostly fitness related, so I’m hoping this will also result in a slimmer, healthier, in shape me. 🙂

In my part of Arlington, VA, there’s a terrible little mall down the street with a Macy’s and Victoria’s Secret… and that’s about it. My traditional black Friday shopping includes swinging by the Macy’s around 2pm and buying discounted home goods. I tend to buy the things my condo needs instead of buying Christmas presents. Since my family lives in Ohio, I shop when I fly home since things are way cheaper there and I don’t have to bring a big suitcase.

I also like to go see movies on the day after Thanksgiving but I really didn’t want to see anything that is out right now. Last year, I was lucky that the Muppet Movie was out, but now I’m left with intense dramas. Is there anything worth paying $12 to see?

Rise of the Guardians was decent for a kid’s movie, but worth a matinée price rather than full price.

I avoid stores on Black Friday, and I’m broke anyway. When I get paid I will have to venture to some type of store. My company is having a fancy end of year hotel party and I have the perfect dress to wear but last time I wore it was in Vegas when it was 80 degrees. Short-ish spaghetti strap dress in NE Ohio in December? No thanks. I’ve decided to pair it with black tights and a pink cardigan to winterize it, and I have a pink clutch and black heels that will go well. For some reason, I’m really nervous about this event and the whole “socializing with my colleagues” thing but I’m not going to skip it because they’re giving away some kickass raffle prizes like an HDTV, an iPad, and a playstation vita. You have to be present to win, so I’m definitely going.

They are giving away two of those! I don’t drink coffee anymore though. It upsets my stomach horribly. I’d rather have a lifetime supply of Monster energy! I think I overdosed on coffee when I was in college and working two jobs, now my body can’t handle it anymore.
