Weekend Open Thread: Memorial Day Edition

memorialdayhotdog

To my American readers: happy Memorial Day weekend! While we kick-off the summer of 2013 and stuff our faces with hotdogs and burgers, let us not forget the true meaning of the holiday — no, not 40% off sales at all our favorite stores, though that is nice, too — but to pay respect to those who sacrificed their lives for our country (Houston, included; oh, relax, I’m kidding! I hear Houston is lovely).

Anyway, I have no big plans for the weekend (Drew is working on Monday, so it kinda just feels like a regular ol’ weekend for us, and a rainy one at that), except a friend’s birthday party Saturday night. Another friend invited us to a BBQ at her place on Sunday but she lives in Jersey and that’s a long commute for us via public transportation. But now that I have family AND friends who live in Jersey, I’m thinking about signing up for Zipcar so I/we can visit them more easily. I hesitate mostly because Drew doesn’t drive — as in he doesn’t know how — and I’m a really nervous driver — so we tend to avoid any activity that would require a car, at least in the tri-state area (I feel more comfortable driving the open highways or country and suburban roads of the midwest where I lived and drove for well over a decade). But I want to start taking family road trips, maybe even as early as this summer, and it just makes sense to get over my fear of driving out of and into the city and finding a car rental option that’s convenient and affordable. Does anyone have experience with Zipcar? Thoughts?

Besides that, what are your plans for the weekend? Anyone taking road trips? ANYONE GETTING MARRIED (GG!)? How many BBQs and picnics you gonna hit? Talk to me. Oh! And last night I took my second mat pilates class and I am a fan! I like it so much better than yoga, at least for now. And I know this isn’t the weight loss thread, but I will share that I am down another two pounds this week, so I feel good about that. And since calories don’t count over holiday weekends, I’m sure I’ll lose another pound or two by Monday, yay!

I won’t be posting on Monday — I’m going to take some time for myself! Maybe go for a bike ride! And stuff like that! — so I’ll see you back here on Tuesday. Happy weekend!

Anyone I know who lives in DC and does not have a car uses Zipcar regularly. Even some one car families use Zipcar when they need another car. Its affordable $9/hour I think and pretty easy. Will you have to buy a car seat or booster for Jackson? Also, Drew should learn how to drive 🙂 What if there’s an emergency and you are in the suburbs or country and he’s the only one who can drive you!?

I’m going to my parents for the weekend. Nothing crazy except visiting this amazing ice cream place in a town that used to be an artist’s colony every summer. They have the best ice cream and the best doughnuts (of all things!). I’m looking forward to sleeping a lot in my bedroom at their house that has blackout shades and enjoying the quiet away from the city.

PS I’m getting really excited for the DW picnic. It will be my first time on a train in the US and my first time on the NYC subway. And It’ll be my first time meeting Wendy!

I’m not sure what Zipcar is, but we have something called “Community Car” or something like that here where you can rent a car hourly or daily if you need it without owning one. I don’t use it (we split a car between the 2 of us and use my mom’s if we need a second one), but I know people who do and they LOVE it. They like have the flexibility to have a car when they need it, but not have to deal with the upkeep, insurance, car payments, etc.

We were planning to have a cookout this weekend, but it’s going to be a bit chilly so we’re limiting it. We’re going to The People’s Bratfest in downtown Madison (which is the more politically correct version of “World’s Largest Bratfest” which is a giant charity brat cookout sponsored by Johnsonville that is a world record holder for the number of brats consumed/bought in a weekend or something and they have a carnival and music and a bunch of other stuff – but there’s some political issues with Johnsonville in our state so we don’t go to that one now that we have an alternative).

Anywho… I hope everyone has a good weekend. We have the kids this weekend so I’m sure I’ll keep busy!

Happy day before the wedding to GatorGirl! Everything’s going to be so wonderful, and I can’t wait to hear all about it!

We were going to go visit my parents’ to see my family post-wedding and go to their cookout, but it’s not looking like that’s going to happen. As I’ve mentioned before, my husband got a hernia on our honeymoon, so I have to do everything for the both of us right now because he’s in so much pain. I figured we’d just drive down and have fun anyway, but then our cat went into heat yesterday. We haven’t had time to get her fixed yet in between nursing and recovering from wedding chaos, and now she’s squawling and rolling around on the floor constantly. I just can’t deal with her squawling on a trip AND having to do everything for my herniated husband AND taking the remaining kittens on their first trip AND doing post-wedding stuff at their house. So I’m probably going to insist that we stay home so I can catch up on our chores. Boring.

Oh, and I just found out that the hair and makeup artist from my wedding is Conway Twitty’s granddaughter! I’m super pumped about it even if it shouldn’t be a surprise near Music City. Conway Twitty’s DNA was in my hair and face a few weeks ago y’all. Be jealous.

I haven’t decided what I’m doing. I do know I am going to a watch party for some soccer game tomorrow. I don’t like soccer, but I like my friends, and they like soccer. I was invited to a picnic in Prospect Park on Monday, but only like three of my co-workers are going (it’s not a work picnic, but we tend to incorporate each other into our social lives), and they aren’t ones I particularly like.

I’ve never used Zipcar, but just read up on their insurance policy and make sure you’re comfortable with it. I was thinking of signing up when I move, but I know at one point their insurance was kind of crappy, so I’m a little wary of it. And if you use them, make sure you report every single scratch or dent BEFORE you start driving because if the next guy reports it for the first time, you’ll get blamed.

Mat Pilates is awesome! I started going to a Sunday class a couple weeks ago because I was too tired for boot camp. You kind of just lie there but you must be toning up because it hurts the next day.

It’s raining and supposed to be cold and wet until Monday. Sucks! I will go to both boot camp and Pilates I think.

I’m excited for this weekend. I moved back home with my parents this week and am so grateful to my dad for trekking 500 miles to bring me and all my stuff back to Minnesota. After living in the middle of nowhere for 10 months, I was so ready to get back to civilization.

Fortunately, my boyfriend also moved to Minnesota too for a job. He moved here two weeks ago and is actually crashing with my parents too, so we’re just one happy family right now! Haha. It’s nice to have my family and friends close by. No matter what I will be living around here next school year. Whether I have to sub again or whether I find a full time job, I’ll find a place to live around here. If nothing else my friend and her husband have a basement that they may be looking to rent out soon so I could always ask them if I could rent their basement.

Fortunately, as I had predicted I’m so so so happy being back here. Many of my friends still live around the area and I’m very close to my family. I almost feel like I’ve gotten closer to them through the past year. Tonight we’re having a bonfire and grilling brats because it’s so beautiful outside right now. From there we’ll see where the weekend goes. 🙂

Welcome back! I should maybe see about setting up a MN meetup for sometime this summer. I tried once before but I don’t think there was any interest/anyone within miles and miles. If you’re staying where I think you are a toooooon of rentals will open up in June and July as the major graduations in the area are taking place soon.

I’ve personally been given several glowing recommendations of Zipcar. At my previous (evil soul sucking) job, I took car rental insurance claims for American Express. Several customers told me how great Zipcar’s customer service was when/if they had an issue with the car or an accident. So I hope that helps. Keep in mind that the basic insurance that comes with the membership has a $750 deductible. They sell an upgrade to make it zero deductible, but you should check with your credit card companies before you buy it. American Express covers that deductible for you if you pay for the car with their card, and I think Mastercard and Visa do the same thing. That might save you some money.

Pilates rocks! I’ve been doing reformer regularly for the last 6 months. Now, my weight hasn’t changed an ounce, BUT I’ve got down 5% in body fat, and a pants size. Plus, my ass looks amazing. Seriously.

We’re having a party Sunday – lots of good Mexican food and margaritas, so people can kick it up and have Monday to recover.

GG, have a lovely wedding, suck in all the good stuff, and I hope it’s drama free.
    Happy long weekend all =)

I’m stoked about the weekend. I’m celebrating my best friend’s birthday down on the river in New Braunfels (where Schlitterbahn is located). My grandma owns a house there and is out of town, so we’ll have the place to ourselves. We’re all going down on Sunday morning and staying until Tuesday and plan to drink and go tubing and possibly go to Schlitterbahn. I’m baking her a birthday cake tomorrow… or cupcakes, I haven’t decided yet… and we plan to grill up a bunch of good food while we’re there. This is the first time in the 7 or so years of knowing my BFF that we’ve both been in serious relationships with guys we can all get along with, so I’m excited. The weekend is going to be a blast. This is the first mini-vacation I’ve been truly excited about in awhile.

Speaking of excitement… I miss getting excited about things like I did as a kid! I think the reason a lot of that excitement goes away as adults is because we have to deal with all the logistics. We have to plan the trip and pay for it and deal with all the little details. As a kid, you’re just along for the ride. I miss that.

I’m going to the Farmer’s Market tomorrow morning with a good friend I haven’t gotten to spend any time with lately and then Saturday night I’m going to watch some rollerderby with some friends. I recently retired after skating for 7 years.
Sunday the Mr. and I are going to a bbq to celebrate a friend getting anew job. At some point this weekend we want to see Star Trek Into Darkness and Monday afternoon I leave for FL for a week and a half to take care of my mom who recently had knee replacement surgery. This will be the longest I’ve ever been apart from my husband since we met.

    Congrats GG!

E had his first bump on the head today. I got out of the shower to hear him having a meltdown downstairs so I went to see what was going on. Mr. Grass was a little shaken up saying that he was washing his hands when E started crying and he must have done a full roll and smacked his head on the edge of the coffee table. He was fine but had a goose egg. Mr. Grass still wanted to get him checked out so we went to see a nurse and the swelling was gone by the time we got there. So then we went and bought foam squares for the floor.

I’m getting out of work 2 hours early so I can pick ex-husband #2 up from the airport, run to the store for drinks, go home, straighten up, and then my 2nd son’s half-sister’s family will be coming over for dinner. The mother married my friend K (who was in the air force with ex-husband #2) and we haven’t seen each other since 2005. My mom and stepdad might stop by, but we’re not sure.

I’m supposed to go to an all-cast meeting for the Ren fair tomorrow, and then stage loading/moving/set-up on Sunday, plus rehearsal. Rehearsal Monday as well.

Don’t know. Haven’t met the executioner yet. He’s in the Battle Crows guild, and we haven’t rehearsed with them yet. They used to be known as the Soma Guild, but there were issues (they were REALLY violent), so that guild got dissolved, got rid of the hard heads who didn’t want to change, and created a new guild. This is a trial period for the Battle Crows, so we’re letting them be our militia for the Magistrate.

I’ll be working, studying for my midterm that’s on Wednesday, and writing my research paper. However, I’ll be taking a break on Tuesday, and that will be my designated wedding day. Even though our wedding is super small, I still have a few things to do. It’s all easy stuff, (call courthouse, order my dress, get shoes, call photographer. Flowers have already been ordered, and we have our rings!) I think the last thing I really have to check on/figure out, will be my hair, and I have an appointment for a trim on Thursday, so it’ll be all worked out then. So I’ll be sure to really celebrate next weekend, when I can breathe a little easier.

Hmmm … hearing that you like pilates makes me want to try. I have tried a little bit of the Wii Fit Yoga, and it wasn’t bad. However, I have a Planet Fitness membership card that barely gets used, and I have yet to go back to Zumba. (Which was super fun, but I was so sore the day after the first class, it hurt to even laugh.) I really need to channel all of my anger/frustration/confusion into some serious gym time. I think I’ll start soon.

I’m in Germany right now so not at home but I have to say – Houston’s inner loop is pretty cool. Like the Montrose, Heights, Rice Village and West U areas are pretty awesome. Downtown and midtown are getting cooler too, especially with the light rail and bike share programs! Sorry, got love for my city! Do wish it wouldn’t get so damn hot in the summer but that’s what swimming is for 🙂 speaking of which, I can’t wait to get home and swim and sunbathe! It’s so much colder here than I thought it would be, which is weird considering I’m used to hot weather in May. Still a great country though.
