Wendy’s Picks

Wendy’s Weekly Picks,” is a feature in which I highlight stuff I like or recommend in the worlds of fashion, gift ideas, home decor, makeup, websites, entertainment, and recipes. Of course, many of the things I link to will be affiliate products, which means I’ll receive a commission on any click-throughs or purchases you make through the affiliate links. As always, I appreciate your support! Here are my favorite finds this week:

I was at the playground the other day (my home away from home) and ran into a dad friend who was wearing the coolest sunglasses (I’m on the hunt for some new sunglasses). I asked him what they were and he said, “Illesteva. It’s easy to remember because the person who started the company wanted to make the illest sunglasses eva.” And they are kind of the illest eva. If I ever want to splurge on a $300 pair of sunnies, I’m really digging these. Ooh, and these, too (which are still splurgy but just over half the price). Since I’m not quite feeling the price tag of those sunglasses right now, I ordered these to try instead. (I also really like these.)

We’re going on a long weekend away next month to a lake house with another family we’re friends with, which is as good an excuse as any to buy a new bathing suit (it’s been about three years since I got a new one — which was similar to this — anyway), and I ordered these two bikinis (from the same brands that make great bras for big boobs) to try, hoping at least one will be somewhat flattering (I’ll settle for not-hideous) on my curvy-I’m-almost-40-and-have-had-two-kids frame. I’ll keep you posted. (And, if you’re interested in these, check Bare Necessities, which is having a 25%-off-on-swimsuits-sale and has a good selection for the curvier among us). UPDATE: The suits arrived shortly after I started this post and I love the Prima Donna one but decided to return the Freya one since it didn’t fit as well. I’d say both suits are very appropriate to full-figured gals, but if you don’t fit that category, allow me to turn your attention to this, this (30% off), and this (which has enough styles and cuts and colors and glowing reviews to have mass appeal).

It’s picnic and BBQ season and this portable grill/tote is cool, sleek, and convenient. It’s also under 40 bucks.

And here’s a table that will hold your wine bottle and glasses. There’s even room for cheese.

Continuing the summer theme here, I just discovered that my beloved facial sunscreen is out of stock indefinitely (maybe it’s been discontinued? Don’t know), which sucks, but I took the opportunity to try a different facial sunscreen I’d heard great things about and, oh wow, I like it even better. It goes on super smooth, disappears into the skin, has a very light, fresh scent, and doesn’t leave skin looking or feeling greasy.

How pretty is this water bottle? So pretty!

Last week, I decided to do two things revolutionary for me. The first: I actually went to a store and tried stuff on. (Usually I do all my shopping online, figuring that returning stuff at the post office down the street is more time and cost-effective that paying a babysitter to watch Joanie while I take a couple of hours to go shopping; I don’t dare go shopping for clothes with an 11-month-old because I’m not a masochist.) Anyway, I had a dentist appointment in Manhattan and decided to stop in a couple stores before I headed home. While at Anthropologie, I tried on some shorts, which was revolutionary thing number two for me since the last time I actually purchased or wore a pair of shorts that weren’t previously a pair of jeans was when President Clinton 1.0 was in office. Imagine my surprise when I found a pair that not only didn’t look hideous on me but also actually looked pretty cute (these were good, too). Guys, I may actually buy a second pair.

Finally, this tote bag is all kinds of cute, and it is made of recycled canvas cotton, and it even has an adjustable strap, which is a rarity in tote bags under $30. Win for you, win for the environment.

Happy (almost) summer, everyone!

Love the sunglasses. I want new ones soon, but they have to be prescription, which is annoying. I should see if those could be done with Rx lenses.

Another summer idea to go with your swimsuits… My mom just brought me this cool scarf from Italy, which is a large square. Not being a tall lady, I looked up how to wear your scarf as a pool cover-up, and it turns out I can wear this thing 4 ways as a pareo, strapless maxi, halter maxi, and an open caftan thing. If you have any larger scarves and need a cute cover-up, try:

Have you thought of doing Warby Parker Rx sunglasses? I got mine and they were less than $140 (with prescription and polarized lenses). They also donate a pair of prescription glasses for every pair bought.

I have a couple pairs and I love them. I had regular glasses, too.

No, thank you! I might pick this up for his birthday. Part of his night out includes a picnic in the park. We’re starting at the Milk Room though. This new super small bar that makes cocktails using rare or old liquors. Reservations are made!

That reminds me that I should probably buy a new bathing suit since I’m also going to a lake house with friends next month…bah. The bathing suit I had been wearing lost some of its fabric somehow, so it became almost sheer in some spots. And the other suit I have, I think is a bit too small on me right now 🙁 The Modcloth one looks awesome but I’m not sure I want to spend that much since I wear a bathing suit maybe once per year. And I’d rather try something on first.

I can vouch for the Modcloth suit – it’s super flattering. I get a lot of compliments on it. The first one I bought lasted 4 years (including mulitple pool, lake or ocean vacations each year, plus hot tubs friends’ houses). I liked it so much I bought 2 more last fall when I needed to replace it.

I don’t have the occasion to go swimming very often, and I’ve had the Modcloth suit for about 5 years. It has no bare spots, rips, or loss of elasticity. Probably the best bathing suit I’ve ever owned. It fits really nice, but it’s vintage sizing, so go up at least one size than your normal dress size.

Coola also makes a great tinted moisturizer with SPF 30 that I’ve been using for the last 18 months or so (alone on minimal makeup days or as a primer on days I need more coverage.) I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Ha, I just got that COOLA cucumber sunscreen in my Birchbox. I’ll second Wendy, it’s awesome. It’s not thick and heavy like a lot of sunscreens, it’s got a lotion consistency and feels just like a really good moisturizer. And my skin drinks it right in.

I just bought the Coola on the Amazon link. I have been looking for a great everyday sunscreen that is not too heavy. Arrives Friday, just in time for an outdoor wedding this weekend. Hooray!

I love those style shorts, they always look good on stubby legged individuals like me and they usually flatter the tummy really nicely.

I’m still not feeling brave enough for a bikini. Kudos to you, Wendy! I’m happy to say I’m getting closer and closer to my pre preganacy size, but I’m not there yet. I went out and bought a swimsuit like the modcloth one just because our temporary housing apartment has a pool. Which is ahhhhmazing. I bought a puddle jumper for the boy (would highly reccomend if you have a little who can’t swim well, yet) and we go swimming a lot. His favorite is jumping in. He says “more jump?” So cute.
The Coola is my favorite. I love it.

Eh, I look a little tubby in the bikini, to be honest, but I kind of don’t care? My legs and arms are pretty toned and strong, but my mid-section could use some work. I’ll probably start doing my crunches and core exercises before I wear a bikini in public, but even if nothing changes, I’m not going to sweat it.

I’m not feeling confident enough to rock one yet, if ever. As much as that goes against my normal DGAF, I do GAF about my belly. It’s all good, though. I feel pretty sexy and svelte in my one piece.

I’m not feeling very comfortable in a bikini these days, but I bought a bunch to wear on my honeymoon this summer. I figure, if I’m in a different country, there’s no chance I would run into anyone I know!
