Wendy’s Weekly Picks

4114265405051_049_bWendy’s Weekly Picks,” is a feature in which I highlight stuff I like or recommend in the worlds of fashion, gift ideas, home decor, makeup, websites, entertainment, and recipes. Of course, many of the things I link to will be affiliate products, which means I’ll receive a commission on any click-throughs or purchases you make through the affiliate links. As always, I appreciate your support! Here are my favorite finds this week:

Anthropologie is having a 20% off sale through the weekend on their tops and sweaters (use code TOPITOFF at checkout). I like this, this, this, this, this poncho, and this reminds me so much of my college days in the mid-90s (so do these, except they’re about ten times more than anything I ever bought in college). Also, this is one of the most beautiful blouses I’ve ever seen.

Joanie will be four months old this weekend, which means it’s just about time for my hair to start falling out. (For those who aren’t aware, most people lose an average of about 100 strands of hair a day, but when you’re pregnant, your hair stops falling out, and then a few months postpartum, all the hair that would have fallen out during those nine months falls out in sudden and dramatic fashion, clogging shower drains and filling dustpans no matter how often you sweep). Anyway, my hair will need a little more attention in coming weeks, which is why I stocked up on my old favorites, Cat Walk Root Boost (seriously, this stuff is amazing!), and Bed Head Foxy Curls. Highly recommend both, even if you aren’t losing hair, and especially if you have wavy to curly hair.

I started cooking salmon this way and I seriously don’t know why I waited so long or why everyone isn’t eating baked salmon every night for dinner. So easy (5 minutes of prep work) and so delicious.

I can’t remember if I’ve recommend this before, but this is my favorite mascara. Totally worth the splurge price. And this is the liquid eyeliner I’ve been using for a few months (I’ve been a liquid liner junkie for about five years and have tried lots of different ones) and I really like it. I’m not very steady with my hand, but this liner always goes on smoothly and has been the easiest for me to use.

Adele has a new album out! Can’t wait for all the karaoke spots to add this one to their songbooks.

My boot debate continues. I bought these a few weeks ago, per your guys’ encouragement, but I didn’t like the way they fit and decided to send them back. So, now I’ve narrowed my selection to a whole new set and I need your help again choosing a pair (or maybe even two). Keep in mind, I walk a lot (at least 3-8 miles a day, according to my iPhone app) and generally wear the same 2-3 pairs of shoes for six months straight, so I need something comfortable and practical while also being cute and stylish, too. I don’t mind paying a little extra for quality, not that any of the boots I selected are super pricey, but you get the point. Okay, I’ve narrowed it down to the Steve Madden So-Good, the Kork-Ease Velma (very similar to my favorite, now-discontinued DV boots from a few years ago), the Latino Sonoma, the Bussola Reed (least my style, but I like them anyway), and the Lucky Brand Harpiee (these don’t have any reviews though and I get the feeling they may not hold up through months of regular and hard wear). What do you think?

I would avoid Steve Madden if you plan to do a lot of walking! The insoles can be really hard and not well padded.

Check out Seychelles if you haven’t aready, I have a couple of pairs of their boots and both are really comfortable.

Ok, good to know! I really like the way they loo, but if they won’t be comfortable they won’t work with my lifestyle.

I’ve had that problem with Steve Madden too. They’re all style/no substance, unfortunately. Nowadays I love Geox, and every time I buy a pair that isn’t Geox, I regret it. They’re so comfy!!!

I made the mistake of wearing a pair and walking like 4-5 miles that day, and my feet hurt for weeks afterwards. They also tend to have little to no traction on the soles.

Oh, booh! I was going to come on here just to say STEVE MADDEN!
      🙂
I do love the Kork-Ease too, though. Very different style, but I like the look. They have attitude.

Thirding the Steve Madden issues. Every pair of shoes I’ve owned has had insole problems. Also, the heels wear out SUPER quickly– not great if you’re a city gal walking about town.

I’ve had hit or miss luck with Steve Madden. The boots I have now I love, but only really for looks. They are not super comfortable after a few hours, and I definitely would not wear them if a lot of walking was involved. It took me some time to break them in, too. I had some really comfortable Steve Madden wedges that were really nice, but it was years ago.

That Kat Von D liner has been on my list for a while. I think it’s time to make the purchase.

I have also jumped on the baked salmon train and love it. I cook it skin side up for the first 12 minutes, then peel off the skin (so easy!) and flip it for the last 5. Delicious and moist every time!

My husband lays it down on tinfoil, then puts syrup over top (maple syrup, blueberry syrup, agave syrup, whatever, but a little goes a long way, just drizzle it). Then he’ll sprinkle some fruit over top, like blueberries or raspberries. Close up the tinfoil and bake for 15-20 mins, comes out perfect every time! And so easy. We don’t even take the skin off, we just serve it with the skin, it separates so easily that you can just use your fork to pick pieces up off the skin.

Aaaaargh where was this column while I was puzzling over salmon yesterday at lunchtime lol. I ended up steaming it in my off brand thermomix with a mixture of maple syrup, water and chilli flakes in the bowl. It made a nice sauce for after but I was panicking the whole time it was underdone. I’ll bake in future.

I like the Bussola the best. I think the Kork Velma ones may be the least versatile. They’re cute, but since they have the brown sole and heel, I feel like they’d be difficult to dress up. The Harpie has the same issue (though I think the sale price might make up for it). But maybe that’s just a weird quirk of mine.

Oooh, those Anthro tops are all so cute. I LOVE that cardigan sweater with the flowers! (I own too many cardigans… it’s a problem.)

Cardigans are so wonderful though! I have what seems like too many, but fall/winter here you have to layer because the weather is so up and down! I end up wearing one almost every day or at least bringing it to work with me.

All that anthropologie stuff is really cute! But I’m so distracted by your description of your hair falling out post-pregnancy. I had no idea and I’m just sitting here dumbfounded.

It’s super scary. It’s just because it doesn’t really fall out much while you’re pregnant (which is why pregnant-woman hair is so thick). So afterwards it has to catch up, and a greater percentage of hair than usual falls out at once. I almost had a bald spot above my temples. Kind of like a widow’s peak. It grows back though.
      .
Worse is that your hair actually changes after pregnancy. Mine did, anyway. It’s coarser, and it used to be straight but now it has a bunch of random kinks in the back which are hard to get out even with a straightener. And even if I do get them out, if I sleep on it once they come back in the morning. So yeah, it looks like comparative crap now and there’s nothing I can do about it. 🙁

My mom’s hair went from super straight to curly after she had my little brother. And it’s been curly ever since.

That happened to my mom too! After her 5th kid. Her fingernails also weakened, they used to be strong but after the last kid they just kept breaking. So weird.
        .
Maybe my hair will change again after this pregnancy. I hope it either goes straight again, or wavy (I doubt it’ll ever get curly, it was stick-straight). This in-between look of straight chunks and kinky chunks looks so stupid. 🙁

I love the anthroplogie tops, they are all so beautiful. Thank you for featuring products for post pregnancy hair loss. My hair is so full and luscious right now, I’m going to be so bummed in a few months.

I always love these recommendations. I love those Anthropologie links, I think I should shop there more often! Also, I got http://www.amazon.com/Franco-Sarto-Womens-Holmes-Boot/dp/B00ZY36UCK these ankle boots the other day and really love them.
