We’re a couple days into the Fall donation drive and so far have raised $1160 — over 20% to the goal! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, from $5 all the way up to $200. If you’re wondering where the money goes, here’s a little breakdown that might help you appreciate the importance of your donations:
$300 covers a whole month of server fees. (And $150 covers two weeks of server fees and $75 covers a week of server fees). This is basically like paying the bill that keeps the electricity on. Or, even more accurately, the rent that pays for DW’s housing.
$200 covers an entire week of posting. I pay Jackson’s babysitter $200 a week to watch him for three mornings and that’s when I write the bulk of the content for the week. (I get a few more hours a week to work when Jackson’s in preschool or on the rare occasions he naps, and I use that time for marketing, reading emails, reading and editing guest submissions, and, of course, moderating and replying to comments, which I try to do throughout each day).
$100 covers 3-4 guest essays.
$50 covers 2 guest essays.
$25 cover 1 guest essay.
I’ve started paying guest contributors for the essays I publish on DW. It’s a modest amount ($25, usually — sometimes a little more), but the principle of it is important to me. Writers deserve to be paid for their work. If/when I’m able to pay more, I will, but for now it’s about $25 per essay.
$25-$50 covers a month of stock photos.
$20 per year covers the domain name (dearwendy.com).
$15 per year covers domain mapping.
$25-$50 covers a month of advertising. (Usually I stick to Facebook advertising, boosting posts so they appear in people’s newsfeeds, and also promoting my FB page to attract new readers; I get up to 750 pageviews each day from FB, and advertising has been a big part of that. Occasionally, I will advertise through GoogleAds, too).
$10 covers a month of thumbs. You know how you can click the thumbs-up for comments you like? Well, that’s a plugin that costs 10 bucks a month. Now you know!
$5 covers a month of spam filtering. You know how there’s never much spam in the comments? That’s thanks to a plugin, and that plugin costs five bucks a month.
Additionally, each year, I also spend anywhere from $500-$2500 on tech assistance and web development. Your donations help cover those costs so we can continue having a functional and easy-to-navigate site to use.
And special thanks to my mom, who copy edits every post for free (and if you see a typo or mistake, it’s probably because I didn’t get copy to her early enough to edit before I posted. After 20+ years of teaching middle school and high school English, she has an eagle eye for errors). Even if I could afford to pay her something, she won’t accept any payment until I “make it big,” which is such a sweet, mom-thing to say.
Thank you, donors, for your support in keeping DW going. If you’d like to contribute, you can do so here; you can make a one-time donation or click the little box to make a recurring monthly donation. I’ve set $5000 as my goal, because that would give a little bit of cushion over the next six months should anything “catastrophic” happen, but $2500 would at least allow me to break even (assuming my ad revenue stays the same). As a thank-you for your support, I’ll add you to my holiday gift card (just make sure to include a mailing list in the note section through Paypal). You’re also eligible for fun give-aways, like these notebooks. Thank you so much for your support!
