2013 Valentine’s Day Gift Guide for Men

iStock_000022804126XSmallIt’s the last day of January, which means Valentine’s Day is fast upon us (it also means my “baby sister” is 30! Happy birthday, Allie!). Yesterday, I posted a Valentine’s Day gift guide for the ladies in your life (including yourself!). Today, I’ve got the dudes covered. Keep reading for some great gift ideas for the guy(s) you love.

41fvFU+QCrLCards Against Humanity
If he likes the game “Apples to Apples” — and who doesn’t love that game? — and he has a bawdy/subversive sense of humor, he will LOVE “Cards Against Humanity,” also known as “dirty ‘Apples to Apples.'” With answer cards that say things like, “Lockjaw,” “Lumberjack Fantasies,” and “Getting so angry that you pop a boner,” this is probably not the kind of card game you’d want to play with Grandma, but play with your most derelict friends and a good time will be had by all.

glenrothes_1995Glenrothes Scotch “1995”
Men love scotch, it’s a proven fact. And this scotch is fancy enough that he probably wouldn’t buy it for himself on a random Thursday, but not so fancy that you won’t be able to afford your latté fix after purchasing it.

onionbookThe Onion Book of Knowledge
If your guy is a fan of the comedy channel, prefers Letterman over Leno, and likes all things trivia, get him this book immediately.

recessargyle_blue1313341142524f84f7cc4f8d8Ozone Design Socks
I got these socks for Drew for Christmas and I’m not kidding when I saw they are among his favorite gifts ever, and I’ve gotten him some good gifts over the years, so these socks must be really something.

61ZedLZcaPL._SS500_Searching for Sugar Man Soundtrack
In the late 60s two hotshot producers discovered a Detroit musician named Rodriguez whom they believed would become a huge star. But his album totally bombed and he disappeared into obscurity. A bootleg recording turned up in apartheid South Africa and made Rodriguez a phenomenon there. “Searching for Sugar Man” is a documentary about two South African fans who set out to find out what happened to Rodriguez, leading them to an extraordinary discovery. This soundtrack consists of beautiful and haunting songs from Rodriguez’s records. Perfect for any music lover, documentary fan, or dreamer.

511XXGA6DNL._SY355_Lube Sampler
When a woman thinks of Valentine’s Day, her mind usually goes to chocolates, flowers, a romantic dinner. When a guy thinks of Valentine’s Day, his mind goes straight to sex. Of course, when he thinks of anything, his mind usually goes to sex, but still. This lube sampler package will affirm for him that maybe this time his thoughts are right on the mark.

41cMB0MOC3LBadger Brush
I asked one of my guy friends what his suggestion was for a guy’s gift guide and he immediately said, “badger brush.” Pair it with some shaving cream that lathers well, like this one, for a shave that’s close and smells all manly.

Absinthe is a sort of mythical substance that still feels vaguely dangerous, like waiting for the G train late at night. There’s also a spoon involved which makes the whole experience sort of illicit and sexy. This sample pack is an inexpensive way to explore the world of absinthe and perhaps discover what it is about it that makes people so crazy for it.

img-thingHeart-y Boxers
I have it on good authority that J Crew makes some seriously comfy boxers. And how cute would your guy look dressed in this Valentine’s-inspired pair.

Because if there’s anything hotter to your man than you it’s Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Salsa. For real.

Hah! Love can certainly suck. My favorite pilates instructor of all time just moved to Chicago, and I want to introduce her to you Chicago DW’er so badly because she is an awesome human being, but I have no idea how to approach it in a non-weird interwebs stranger sorta way. Have a good rest of your day AP.

Just tell her to start reading the site and then check out the forum for meetups to see when they next Chicago get-together is!

These are awesome because men are SO hard to buy for but there are a bunch on this list that I like. We don’t give Valentine’s gifts but you should rerun this every so often –makes a great bday list too.

uhhh…. I sometimes forget the basic tenets of feminism, but this might be the “new feminism” we’ve heard so much about. You know, the one where girls get the playboy logo tattooed on their lower backs as a form of empowerment…..

I dunno, that book looks pretty good. I’d keep it for yourself. Seriously. Why can’t you have that book? Why should he get it? Eh? EH?! I’m just sayin’, think about it. Think about how much you need it for yourself.

Good call on the Cards Against Humanity Game! It is not for the feint of heart though. Some of the cards are EXTREMELY offensive, and the game is best played in a group so you can make it an impromptu drinking game.

A note on the Cards Against Humanity Game – if you’re truly strapped for cash, the folks behind CAH also allow fans to print a set of their original set for FREE! You just save the document on their website, print it on decent paper stock (think business card thickness), and put it in a fancy box – and you have a cheap gift for the guy. I will say that it is better to buy the set though because: 1. you support the publishers of the card game by doing so 2. you support WENDY by buying through her Amazon link 3. the nicely boxed set meshes better with the two expansion sets and special holiday pack they released.

Oh that’s a good idea. Know what’s even better than a cheap gift for him? No gift at all! Keep all the gifts for yourself you deserve them more!!

I tried to buy through the amazon link, but it’s only through 3rd party vendors and the price is crazy jacked up. I went ot the official website and they are “Sold out.” So weird to have a “cards against humanity” shortage!!

Does anyone know the name of the game that is incredibly similiar, it comes in a green box…

Oh, you mean the game that comes in that green box? Yea, I know it. It’s called love sucks.

[Ok, ok, I’m done now! No, wait, ok, now.]

      • Fabelle January 31, 2013, 4:37 pm

You don’t mean Apples to Apples, right?

Also Wendy, thanks for posting Cards Against Humanity! I walked into a roomful of strangers once who were all playing this game, & they invited me in, & it was so fucking hilarious, but I never found out what the name of the game was. It was totally…this game. (I kept describing it to people as “like, an X-rated Apples to Apples?”)

      • 6napkinburger January 31, 2013, 4:59 pm

No, but I actually was Cards Against Humanity — my friends just printed their own and put it in a green card holder.

It’s so annoying that it’s sold out!

I’m tempted to get an Absinthe sampler box for my boyfriend. He is part-German and so I would totally get the three German absinthe tubes….but why so expensive!? Damn overseas products and expensive shipping. It’s something to think about though. He does like absinthe. I was under the impression that it is illegal in the US though?

Wendy, how do you come up with such great gift ideas???

Aw, thanks. I like farting around on the internet looking for cool stuff/ window shopping (sometimes, I like to go to sites and fill up my “shopping basket” and then log out before I buy anything; I get the thrill of the hunt without breaking the bank). Years ago, I used to write a fairly popular product/shopping blog, so doing these gift guides gives me a chance to flex that muscle again. It’s fun.

I do that too, add all this stuff to my cart, and then leave the site before I can click Buy

  • quixoticbeatnik February 1, 2013, 12:37 pm

I also really liked those tights on the women’s gift guide! I like window shopping too. Especially on Groupon – it’s my weakness. But I always have to stop myself and be like – “Do I REALLLLY need this?”

Wendy, I’m sorry about my anti-love rant last week. Everybody, buy all the stuff above- or yourself, your dad, your brother, or… ok, your lover, too. Love is a good thing.
