Dear Wendy
Dear Wendy

4th of July Open Thread

Happy Independence Day to my American readers, and to everyone else: Happy 4th of July! I imagine a lot of you are off work today and out enjoying BBQs with friends and family. So in lieu of a new column, let’s have a mid-week open thread here. Readers choice — talk about whatever you want. How are you spending the day? What are you drinking? Will their be fireworks in your life tonight (wink-wink)?

Have fun USA! I have nothing to contribute, so I’ll just wish all my fellow Canadians a belated Happy Canada Day! πŸ™‚

I was going to go camping with a friend once I got off work but that has been canceled. Thanks, rain. I live in AZ it never rains. Also, the campsites I wanted to go to have been shut down due to some grizzly bear making people while they are sleeping.

Say WHAT?? What was that grizzly bear doing to those people while they were sleeping?

We’re making Alton Brown hamburgers tonight, and writing thank you notes for the wedding swag =)
The wedding ended up being a lot of fun, and none of the things I worried about happened. Which goes to show, worrying works!

    Happy 4th all!!

I’m dw-ing from the pool of my friends house… After my intense weekend of lake housing and my mom and sister and drinks in Chicago and dinner and babies and meeting long lost cousins… It’s been intense. But awesome. This is probably the best 4th I’ve ever had.

I scrubbed down the whole bathroom and re-caulked the bathtub. Doesn’t that sound like fun? πŸ™‚ My mom and I did go to some fireworks last night though (no other “fireworks” in this house tonight, unfortunately).

Update on my oh-so-fun 4th of July: I also cleaned the living room, cleaned out my bearded dragon cage (including all new sand and washing all of his logs and rocks and stuff), cleaned out my rat cage (including hosing down the whole thing) and cleaned out my hedgehog cage. Oh and I cleaned the litter boxes. And now I’m going to clean the living room and my room.

We went shooting today, figured I better exercise my second amendment rights! But man it was HOT!! And no damn shade, hopefully I didn’t get a sunburn. But we had fun, always a blast rapid firing some high-powered rifles down range at a zombie target. πŸ™‚

We were shooting a short barrel M14, Mauser, 12 gauge shotgun, and a Glock 40. My favorite is the M14, keep telling my husband we need to get another so we’re both equipped for the pending zombie apocalypse. πŸ™‚

Sounds like fun!! I miss having big guns. Unfortunately, the higher caliber guns belonged to my ex and all I have left is my .22. I chose to buy a college degree instead of fun toys. πŸ™

Today is my birthday but I’m spending it working on a take home exam due tomorrow. Partly because I procrastinated (though I only had the time to work on it on Sunday anyway) and partly because most of the friends that I’m close to are out of town for the holiday, as often is the case on my birthday lol. And since I’m single right now, there won’t be any “fireworks” happening for me tonight. Oh well. At least I have an A in both classes right?

I’m in NC at my mother-in-law’s house (she’s awesome). My husband and I came up here from Florida for a custody hearing. We are fighting his ex for custody of his daughters. We grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and then my stepdaughters talked us into a game of badminton. I suck at it. The 102 degree heat did not help. I’m looking forward to returning to the nice cool Florida weather – no joke. Anyhow, the hearing began yesterday and ended up going much longer than expected so we did not return home today as planned. It will continue at least until the end of the day tomorrow. Wish us luck?

I’ve got a few this week! I love how the towns spread out the fireworks for before and after the 4th! Tonight no town really does anything since Boston does fireworks and because it’s hot and rainy I’m not down there, so I’m watching on TV. Tomorrow there are more fireworks for me though! Don’t worry, my birthday is still being celebrated!

I know exactly what you mean. We can’t undo what’s been done but we have it all on paper so hopefully we can stop it from being repeated. For what it’s worth, his ex-wife made a total ass of herself on the stand and we haven’t even had the opportunity to cross-examine her yet. At one point one of her statements prompted the judge to interject with a few questions of his own. Her answers resulted in him saying “frankly ma’am, that disturbs me.” I’d love to type it all out for you and any other DW reader interested but I am using my phone right now during a break from poring through previous court filings and highlighting the items she included in hers and then contradicted in her testimony. We’ve been going through documents since my stepdaughters left 6 hours ago and we are STILL catching her in lies. It blows my mind. We need to save these girls.

      • LadyinPurpleNotRed July 5, 2012, 12:27 am

My family events always sound amazingly boring, but are absolutely hilarious to experience. We’re a crazy bunch.

Spent the day with 3 of the 4 sisters of my mom. All told, my mom and her sisters are the 5 Crazy Aunts, and are pretty much the idea that most people write those “coming home to crazy family” movies are all about. I love all of them, though. The older they get, the raunchier they get. It’s also a challenge among them on who can make their mother gasp in horror first!

We went to a local, man-made lake and spent the day enjoying the hot breeze, the shade, the bbq, and the amazing food my family makes that I’m terrified I’ll not be able to replicate to pass on to the next generation.

Though, if I had a choice, I’d be in my favorite 4th of July destination: Gettysburg, Pa. I’m a HUGE Civil War nut, and I consider that place a home away from home, so I’m a little sad today too. πŸ™ Maybe next year, Gettysburg. Just maybe.

I was sick all night and all morning (short stomach virus I think – the toilet became my new best friend but I wasn’t throwing up….okay moving on) then when I finally felt better from THAT, I somehow twist some muscle in my back so it’s killing me. Well, now it isn’t. Because I took some hydrocodone. I feel great, but I’m hoping I don’t regret this when I wake up for my 10 am metaphysics class.

Pro tip: don’t attend a university that makes you take 9 hours of theology and 9 hours of philosophy. And then 6 more hours of one. You will kill yourself…..But will you actually be dead? Blah!

It was kind of a shitty day. The sickness, plus I was sad because I missed my family (I just moved into my first apartment by myself, but in the same city πŸ™‚ ). So I went home to do laundry. And cry. And be by myself.

Debbie downer here – and now it’s time to sleep. Happy birthday ‘Merica!

My Hair Hurts. Oh and I’m mad that I got cockblocked by mother nature. All my friends are hooking up with bar men left and right, and I was starting to warm to the idea, its been WAY too damn long of a dry spell. But instead, mother nature came to Ruin my plan and now I’m back to I want to be in a relationship. I cant be too mad I guess because it DID give me the best out ever when the friend of the guy my friend hooked up with kept trying to get with me. After repeated rejections because he had a gf, I finally just said, dude I CAN”T. so stop trying. He did ask ONE LAST TIME, when I was going home, so not sure it totally worked. But oh well. I also quite enjoyed singing along to call me maybe while i walked home at 2 am, and far far away from the creepster.
