Best Bridesmaid Gifts of 2014

BridesmaidsIt’s wedding week here on Dear Wendy, and, to celebrate, I have some handy-dandy wedding-related gift guides to help you find the perfect gift for the brides, grooms, bachelorettes and bridesmaids in your life. A popular convention around bridesmaids’ gifts is to give something that you’d like your bridesmaids to wear during the wedding, like matching necklaces or fascinators. Boo, I say. The point of a gift is to give something you think the recipient would enjoy and appreciate… and maybe use beyond the occasion of your wedding. With that in mind, here are some of my favorite bridesmaid gift ideas of 2014 — gifts your bridesmaids will actually like receiving. Unless they hate awesome stuff.

il_570xN.581710929_c41sInitial bracelet
These beautiful and personal initial bracelets can be worn at the wedding for a uniform look, but they aren’t so precious looking that your bridesmaids won’t love wearing them long after your nuptials are over and done.

Clinique-Full-Potential-Lips-Plum-and-Shine-Mini-Duo-10-piece-Set-9abb6e8e-be48-4526-91dc-e5dd1e2cac7c_320Clinique Full Potential Lips Mini Duo Collection 5 Piece Set
This is my favorite lip gloss collection — I have them in random coat pockets and various purses and bags — and this set is unique in that there are two universally-flattering colors in each tube, giving your bridesmaids lots of different options.

Just a cute little box to stash jewelry, love notes, a lover’s lock of hair. You know, the usual.

Lavender Apple Bliss Gift Set

My favorite scent of hand lotion, hands down. This collection comes in a beautiful gift box and includes all the stuff. All of it.

FH13_RDP243_RSNVLTv2_SQInitial Jewelry Dish
Another place to stash your jewelry, glasses, morning vitamins, and lover’s lock of hair. What? Doesn’t anyone keep lovers’ locks of hair anymore?

51pdSgOW98L._SX425_7-Piece Stainless Steep Martini Set (plus chocolate-covered olive almonds)
This is the kind of gift you might see more of on a groomsman list, but why should they have all the fun? Plus, you guys, the olives are actually chocolate-covered almonds! SQUEE!

15012772_201402041755Orla Kiely Poppy Bag Collection
Target has a adorably collection of Orla Kiely bags in various colors that would make fantastic gifts on their own. If you want to personalize them, you could fill each bag with some of your favorite bath and beauty items, like clear lipgloss (I love Elizabeth Arden’s), Lush bath bombs, fancy hand lotion, a small perfume sample (my current fave is See By Chloe), and maybe a small travel candle.

il_570xN.483138055_mbnyPainted Wooden Vase and Candle Holder
How pretty are these? SO PRETTY!

il_570xN.487757090_4vlsLeather Wristlet
If you decide to give these gorgeous leather wristlets to your bridesmaids, can I be an honorary one? I will wear whatever you tell me to and do my hair in whatever fashion and I’ll even put on tight shoes if it will score me a clutch as sweet as this one. Thanks.

Don’t forget to include a bottle of bubbly!

Dear LBH, is it cool if I make Wendy a bridesmaid? Do you want to be a bridesmaid, too? I mean, I was just going to have my sister stand with me but you’re already going to be drinking and body glittering with us the night before the wedding and now I have to include Wendy since I totally want these wristlets, so just let me know. XOXO

This happened in the comments section of the post about wedding nights. I said I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend the night before my wedding with my sister or Llama Guy, and everyone voted for my sister. Then LBH said we should drink lots of champagne and snack and play with body glitter and invited herself over. My real wedding is not going to be able to compete with the pretend DW plans I’ve made.

I think what we’ve learned from all this is that the annual DW Central Park picnic should have a llama.

Llama, its YOUR day. YOU are the princess. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE else matters. My advice is to invite Wendy along, but be sure to specifically send both of us a list of your demands for gifts.

        1. Only pet the llama if I’m not petting him or on my way to pet him.
        2. Don’t get between me and the cake. I must have direct access to the cake at all times or I’ll have a meltdown that will put a toddler to shame.
        3. Make sure AP is there to braid my hair because the only hair style I can comfortably do myself is a ponytail and I really, really want a braided updo.
        4. Bring treats for the llama. Llama Guy and I don’t need anything, but the llama will probably be hungry because I’m not sharing my cake with him.
        5. That’s all for now but I reserve the right to make changes.

Love the wine sleeve 😉 I’d totally buy those bad boys if I were getting married.

The greatest bridesmaid gift I ever received was a target gift card and a note that said “Bridesmaids gifts are bullshit, but you’re not, so go knock yourself out at Target!”

Can you sneak in monogrammed hand towels? haha. We have those, and GGuy doesn’t really notice. He doesn’t love the bags with our last name plastered on the side, but whatevs. they where all gifts to me!

      • No Pants May 1, 2014, 2:18 pm

I think I can get away with bath and hand towels with just the initial of our last name, versus our couples monogram. He doesn’t hate them, but at the same time he definitely thinks it’s weird. I think that’s the hippie (sp?) scientist in him trying not to conform. I have a ton of monogrammed boat totes and dishes from my sisters-in-law, so hooray for getting these things as gifts! I actually received a monogrammed boat tote as a bridesmaid gift for being in my brother’s wedding and I’ve been using it for almost ten years!

I got a monogramed boat tote as a wedding gift! I love it! I’m pretty hippie-dippie (as I like to call it) but still love a great monogram. On the plus side our last name is only 4 letters, so I can just slap the whole thing on most stuff, and don’t have to do our silly married monogram.

      • No Pants May 1, 2014, 2:29 pm

Yes, me too. I was my parents’ weirdo hippie-goth child, but I have always loved monograms. He Pants says it’s the only part of Connecticut that stayed with me.

In other news, I like the idea of using your last name. Ours is 6 letters, so I bet I can go that route.

I love monograms too. Anything with names or initials really. Its annoying that I don’t have the same last name as everyone in my house because I can’t get all those cute signs like “The Jones Family” or whatever.

      • lets_be_honest May 1, 2014, 2:48 pm

I have our first name initials ALL OVER THE PLACE already. Its starting to look weird in my house. Ok, cute story time! The first Christmas gift (I think xmas, maybe bday) Peter got me was a bracelet – it was silver or something with some diamonds around the rim – and I was like oh, how cute and then he explained that there were 3 diamonds only, one for each of us.
But anyway, yea, I love initials, I love things in 3s now and I love matching anything.

I agree with Bethany. Drag your feet indefinitely. If you’re not one of those people who is just jonesing to be Mrs. New Lastname, you might end up hating it, and then at that point it’s hard to go back.

I’ve decided that if I get married again I’ll be fine with socially going by Mrs. New Last Name, but imma legally die as IWTTS Old Last Name.

I JUST found out that my SIL never legally changed her name, but is known by her married name, so I’m going to do the same thing. Now that I think about it, most of my friends and co-workers haven’t legally changed theirs, either. He Pants doesn’t seem to care. Also, it’s REALLY weird how a lot of people think you aren’t married if you haven’t legally changed your name.

My bag is OK, I’m just going to hand embroider a little note above the incorrect last initial that says “not” so everyone knows that’s not actually my last initial. Then the kidnappers will be thrown off, too.

I am lazy and have no OCD about normal things, but carrying around a bag with the wrong initials would, for some bizarre reason, make me cuckoo.

Its too bad your new last name doesn’t begin with a B and that you aren’t divorced and remarried to a man whose last name is cream, because then you could be BBCream.

I hate to admit it but I’m not a fan either. Initials just don’t do it for me you know? Although I do think those signs that are like “The Jones Family” sometimes are cute. But initials are dumb.

We made a merge name of our last names for fun and when we told his mom what it was, she was insulted on his behalf because there were more of my name’s letters in it than his. haha. (if I’m making no sense, its like if our names were merged to be Homspson or Sonest)

Haha that’s awesome. I know a couple that did that. They wanted the same last name but didn’t think it was right to take the guys so they just applied to both get a new name. I think that’s a little – I don’t know silly – because then you’re both giving up your heritage, but I liked the creativity of it all.

See, I tried the Clinique Chubby Stick tinted balm and it just didn’t seem to moisturize my lips well. I was constantly reapplying it, but my lips still felt dry. One swipe of Burt’s Bees does me for a few hours, though.

Oh oh oh do you guys want to know what also makes for a great jewelry holder? Those chocolate wedge things you can by at Trader Joe’s. You know, up in the check-out lane where the little chocolates and stuff are? The ones in the round tins? Here’s a link to them on Amazon (and if I did it right, this link will take you through Wendy’s link): http://www.amazon.com/Trader-Joes-Chocolate-Caramel-Wedges/dp/B00BA5JBLS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398969099&sr=8-1&keywords=Trader+Joe%27s+wedge+chocolate

It’s great because it’s like only a few bucks, you get to eat all the chocolate first, and then BAM, instant awesome jewelry holder – with a lid that screws on which is great for when you’re moving, like I just did. I went back and bought several, ate up all the chocolate, and then had great jewelry holders.

I’ve never been a bridesmaid, but I was in the “house party” for a friend’s wedding (I think it’s a Southern thing?) and the bride gave me a beautiful set of notecards. I think stationary is a great gift because as I’ve journeyed to the center of adulthood, I’ve learned how useful it is to always have a stash of thank you cards, birthday cards, and blank notecards on hand for when you need one.

My secret is to be really bad at crafts, and planning events, and makeup and hair. I’m very undesirable as a bridesmaid. I often get invited to weddings, warmly as a very good friend, but NEVER get asked to do stuff. It’s awesome.

I’ve only “officially” done it once, but for my SILs wedding I was basically an honorary one. I went to and helped host all the parties, got ready in the bridal suite, greeted/handed out programs, and was basically her and my MILs right hand on the wedding day.
