DW Donation Drive

iStock_000021984950XSmall

Back in March, some readers started a donation drive in the forums to raise money to run this site. I embraced the idea and posted about it on the main page and said I’d likely do a similar PBS-style drive twice a year. I was aiming to do one at the beginning of September, trying to get a small e-book finished that I could offer up to those who donated a certain amount. Unfortunately, time got away from me and I still don’t have the book finished (it will be done by the next drive though, I promise, and then I hope to have at least one new one every year, if not two). In the meantime, without knowing my plans, readers have launched two small donation drives in the last two weeks in the forums (one for my birthday a week ago, and again this week to help with costs to get me to my grandfather’s funeral). Their and your generosity is enormously appreciated.

Since the drives have already been initiated, I’m going to piggy-back on them and invite you to join in the giving if you feel inclined. Months ago, I outlined the expense of running a site like this (you can read that here). While the site is generating a wee bit more income since March through ads, affiliate commissions, profile makeovers, and generous donations from readers, I still usually break even each month (hey, at least I’m not losing money running this site anymore, thanks to you!).

This has been an especially expensive month, both personally and professionally, with a necessary $2,000 site upgrade in the works, which will improve the speed and drastically cut down on present and future glitches (it’s also going to look prettier, and it should be completed in the next couple of weeks), as well as costs to attend my grandfather’s funeral (I’m leaving tomorrow morning; Drew and Jackson will stay behind). So, if you would like to show your support to me and the site, this is a good time to do it. Of course, I realize not everyone is in a position to give money, even if you do value the site, and I appreciate that. Your comments, emails, occasional gifts, and non-monetary support all mean so much to me, too. Money just happens to be what pays the bills.

So, if you like this site — if it provides entertainment for you or emotional support or a way to just kill a little time during the long hours at your office job, and if you feel inclined, consider donating here. Any amount helps. I know for a lot of people, this site is more than just a blog — it’s a community. It’s where you come to share good news or find support when things are shitty. Many of you have met in person, you’ve formed friendships both online and off, and I know when the site is down, even for an hour, you miss it. If that describes you — if you find value in visiting this site and aren’t financially struggling, please consider showing your support and investing in the future of DW. Your donations will go toward overhead expenses (outlined here), as well as a small salary for me so that I can continue devoting as much time as I do to running this site.

Thank you so much for your support, kindness, and generosity, especially to everyone who has donated this calendar year (and if you would like to be included on this list, please include the name you’d like me to publish when you send your donation).

I don’t have much to spare at the moment, but I made a small ‘token’ donation to show my appreciation for this site, one of my favorites:). Wishing you all the best.

Hey Wendy what’s the smallest you’ve received and what’s the largest? You know, just in case someone wants to donate $5 for example but feels it’s too small to be appreciated – or for the crazy who wants to out-donate the biggest donator. … Are you allowed to share the range? Oh oh oh I have an idea, whoever donates the most gets their name printed somewhere – only don’t say how much they donate; then when someone topples them, you replace their name and you can show what the last highest donation was … Come on it will be fun!

Well, I get lots of $5 donations, and I appreciate them very much! I would say 30-40% of people who donate, donate $5. I won’t say how much the highest donation was, but the donor member’s name is at the top of the Thanks list.

I have so many nosy questions I don’t even know where to start! So, I think I’ll rest for the day with the nosy questions I have already asked. But. BUT. I will find a way to ask the rest later when I can figure out how hide the nosiness of it. This is gonna be tricky.

Ok just one quick follow up nosy question: I’m 34 on the list. Does that mean those 33 guys ahead of me donated more?! I’m livid! I gotta beat those show-offy assclowns! [You’re not realy showoffy or assclowns.] Or maybe I’m 34 on the list because I’m actually 34 years old? Or because that was my ACT score? I mean the ACT score I wanted? Or because it’s my waist size divided in half? (It’s been a summer of bad dieting.) Or maybe it’s not actually 34. Maybe I’m 33 on the list and simply can’t count? Wendy, why, why, why? Wendy, my head is exploding.

WENDY! Wendy. I’m going nuts. I can’t handle all this pressure of not knowing.

I am going to hop on an elliptical downstairs, then take a cold shower, and then return to work when I can concentrate. Byeeeeeee.

    Great Amazon buy!

So I just heard about a book by JJ Abrams called “S.” – So it is a book that is a mystery in a diary. And you get the book shrink wrapped. The book has all of these clues tucked into the pages like a real diary including cocktail napkins and receipts to help you solve the mystery. I just preordered it…

On a marketing standpoint, it might save books because e-readers like myself haven’t bought printed books in forever. So this got me to buy a book and it will never be in a library because the stuff will fall out…. Brilliant. Buy it through the dear wendy link 🙂

I signed up to donate a small amount on a recurring monthly basis! Good idea to offer that, similar to what I do w/ NPR :). Thanks Wendy!

Ok, so this amazon thing, explain how it works???? Please!

So, do I need to access Amazon through Dear Wendy so she gets my support? Or is there someway to set it up so it autmatically happens every time I type http://www.Amazon.com in my browser? Because, with my Kindle, I’m reading a book a week. That’s a lot of $2 – $10 purchases throughout the year.

I know! Unfortunately, purchases have to be made through the direct link on this site — any link, but the easiest to find is the little search box in the right sidebar — in order for me to get a commission. I know it’s a pain and it’s easy to forget, so I am grateful when readers remember!

There should be something that pops up on your amazon that says “wait! you should go to the DW affiliate link to purchase this!” That would make my life a lot easier.

Finally donated 🙂 The recurring amount is a great idea! I always try to remember to use the amazon links here, but sometimes I get a little click happy when I’m shopping on there and forget.
