Dear Wendy
Dear Wendy

How Are you Spending the Rest of the Summer?

Guys, it’s already August 9th, which means Labor Day, the unofficial end of Summer, is less than a month away. School is starting back up in some places in the country. (Here in NYC, where it starts a little later than most places, we have about four weeks to go.) The sun is setting a little earlier, stores are selling Halloween stuff, and if you need a new swimsuit, you’re out of luck because they’re pretty much sold out everywhere. So, what’s on your agenda for the remaining weeks of the season? Here’s what I’m up to between now and Labor Day:

We’re heading to Missouri this weekend for 12 whole days (a couple days with friends, some time with my parents, a few days on our own). We’re going to swim in pools and lakes and ride bikes and play miniature golf and watch movies in air-conditioned theaters (it’s been ages since I saw a movie in the theater…) and eat frozen custard.

I can’t believe 2/3 of the summer has gone by and we haven’t been to Coney Island yet. (I took the kids in April when Drew was out of town, but that was Spring and we were in jackets and it’s a decidedly different vibe in late Summer when the sweat rolls off you and you’d do anything for a few inches of shade and a slushy with bottom-shelf alcohol), so we’re going to squeeze in a trip.

I read a review of this book in the New Yorker and now it’s next on my to-read list.

Finish hanging pictures on our walls, finally.

Grill more meals on our deck, which we’re soooo enjoying right now. (We’ve never had enough outdoor space for a grill before and now we do and it’s kind of changed our lives a little bit; if you have any grill recipes you love, please share!)

Maybe take Jackson to his first Broadway show (Joanie is a little young still).

More margaritas, naturally.

And you??

Summer always passes way too quickly…but if it lasted longer, I suppose it wouldn’t be as precious. We’ll be seeing an outdoor play, kayaking, camping on an island in a lake, attending a bbq or two, and leaving for Switzerland a few days before it becomes autumn!

Tomorrow is my last day of work. I’m spending the weekend packing and then mid next week I have to be completely moved out of my condo. And then I plan to spend 5 days just enjoying time with my family before I get on a plane and cross the ocean!

I’ll be finishing up the nursery, taking a birthing class, and generally trying to stay cool and calm until my due date in September. And I’ll be going to a few more baseball games, so long as the baby doesn’t come early (and the weather cooperates). 🙂

Unpopular opinion: I’m ready for fall.

Anyway, I want to take my dog to the dog park beach and the guy I’m dating and I want to try paddle boarding.

Soooo I have no plans, ha. Last weekend I went to Lake Tahoe for a long weekend and it was lovely!! Wish I could have stayed the whole week.
I have a work deadline the 24th, so I will probably be working a day or two on the weekends. Summer weather here lasts until Halloween, so I’m hoping to spend some time just relaxing in the sun before the temps get cooler!

No need to make grand plans — just think of a couple simple things you like to do (or something you’ve always wanted to do) in the summer and vow to do them in the next few weeks.

That’s totally true! I think what happens for me is, by the time the weekend comes I’m exhausted and just end up doing… not much, haha.

I *am* doing a spa day with my bf on the 31st. I’m going to take the day off and have a 4 day weekend (with Labor Day as a holiday)! Maybe we’ll go do a hike or two or do some touristy things around my city while the weather is nice and warm! 🙂

    Mmm Ted Drewes! So yummy

As I messaged Wendy earlier this week, i’m 2 months away from my due date and I’m in full-on purge mode. Every room, every closet, I’m on a mission

I also just got my new carseat in. very exciting I know, but since I uber a lot, I needed one that was okay without a base. and light

Sounds like we’re on the same missions. I’m realizing just how non-baby friendly our house is, and it’s kind of fun re-arranging the space. Makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something (same as you, I bet!). Curtains came today. Also exciting. 🙂

haha i’m not even bothering to childproof the apartment because we’re gonna be moving at the end of our lease.. BUT it’s a great opportunity to get rid of random stuff.. to make space for the stroller so it can go in a closet. My sister in law asked if i had made my list of freezer meals we were going to pull together and i said “first we purge, then we plan meals, then we clean, then we make the meals” .. so still a week or two away from switching gears 🙂

and i need to do the same thought process at work

I think I have the summertime blues. I feel stuck, or maybe lost…I wish someone (like a fairy godmother) could wave a wand and figure out how to get unstuck for me.

Day to day, I’m doing all the summer things with the kids, so that’s been mostly fun and uplifting. We need to go down the shore one more time, and eat more ice cream on the boardwalk.

The perseid meteor shower is this weekend, if you are into that sorta thing!

I think summertime can be difficult for some people in the same way winter is difficult for people. There’s so much pressure to enjoy every minute and pack in lots of activities. It’s ok to feel blue. It’s ok to feel stuck too. If you’re still feeling that way come fall, maybe think about talking to someone about it.

Sorry you feel, down, anonymousse. We’re getting the kids ready to go back to school.

I have a few projects I’m working on but sometimes life feels so fluid and open-ended that I can end up feeling a little lost, too. Part of it is because I’ve been really open to change on the part of my husband and my kids. Sometimes it’s hard to justify getting a job when I know I’ll need to be home when school lets out and on days when they are sick. Our vacation time is always scheduled around my husband’s job. So while I do want to make some money and keep myself busy, I don’t always feel exactly productive compared with some of peers who are really good at balancing their home life and a career. No good comes from comparing myself to different people with different strengths.

Stay strong. I know you have an important anniversary coming up and that you are accommodating and supporting a lot of people in your life right now.

I fled LA for a good long stretch. Arrived up here in Minnesota lake country on July 28th… staying at the family cabin until late evening on the 21st. I needed to get the fuck out of dodge — and have wanted to do an extended lake stay for a while now.
    .
Best. Decision. Ever. Feel like I have been gone forever — and there is still so much time left!
    .
Plenty of lazy days of canoeing, sailing, swimming, and mojitos await.

The rest of my summer and most of fall will be spent working on two major bids with a few family obligations sprinkled in. I’m not really that stoked, tbh. There are two things that I’m looking forward to and that are keeping me going.

    1. The husband and I are celebrating our 1st anniversary by having brunch at the same beautiful spot that we married at and had a family brunch immediately after. We’re also staying in the hotel where this restaurant is located and will get to enjoy it. The rooms are effing amazing!

    2. My friend and I are taking a long weekend in Cancun mid-october. CAN’T WAIT. We’re going to a place resident forum guru Kate recommended. Thanks Kate!

Well it is my birthday month so obviously the whole World stops to celebrate that…..ok, I just am actually looking forward to a relaxing weekend since it falls on a Friday…at the end of the month. I do always insist on ONE thing for my birthday however, besides alcohol of course, simply to not cook or clean that day. If that means going out, or just someone else making dinner, whatever it is so long as I get a day off. It could be Hamburger Helper for all I care as long as I don’t have to do it or clean the mess.

More interesting summer news to come that I truly want to share but have to wait until tomorrow lest it ruin a surprise.

I leave in a few days for an annual friends’ cottage week on Georgian Bay, right by Killarney Provincial Park (in Ontario). I work ridiculously long hours and haven’t taken time off since January, so I’m very much looking forward to a week of relaxing, swimming, canoeing, hiking, campfires, and playing silly/inappropriate card games.

My husband and I have travel vouchers for flights that need to be used soon. The cheapest destinations from where we are (Toronto) are: LA, NYC, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Miami, Philadelphia and Washington, so we’re trying to decide where to go for a long weekend. We’ve both been to NYC and were just in Boston last month for a wedding, so we’re thinking one of the other cities. Any suggestions??

    Enjoy Missouri, Wendy!

I would say Miami, but it’s getting to be hurricane season so it could be hit or miss. But that’d be a beach vacation. Or fly to Boston and take the ferry to Provincetown on cape cod?

I know Orlando already has something going on as of the last few hours. I’d for sure avoid FL during hurricane season. The chances of your trip being ruined are just so high.

Biased, but Chicago. And if you can get flights on Porter, it’s a very short and easy flight from Billy Bishop to Midway. Although, I actually feel like Chicago is the Toronto of the U.S., so maybe you want a different experience. If NYC and Boston are out, I think I’d do Philly or Washington next.

Washington! It will be hot, but there is so much to see and do in DC (and if you stick to the National Mall, it’s mostly free). Go on the tour at the U.S. Mint, for sure. And you can hit the Capital, the Supreme Court building, all the monuments, Arlington… and the ballpark, if you want (go on Stubhub for cheap day-of tickets). Bring an umbrella for shade.

Don’t go to LA! Or at least go to Orange County, PLENTY to do. But if you do go to LA please go to the Ghetty museum. My favorite place in CA period. Also biased but either way I wouldn’t venture into the water in SoCal.

I vote for Chicago -midwestern nice, awesome shopping, fantastic restaurants (although Philly has some outstanding ones too). Art Institute is beyond delightful. Boat tour on Lake Michigan is delightful (or dinner cruise). 20 min outside of the city is a beautiful botanical garden.

Miami is too hot this time of the year. Dallas has limited nightlife. Philadelphia is great but I think Chicago is better.

Washington DC – you can’t see everything in a weekend and you will drag yourself from museum to museum without actually seeing anything because you’re rushing it. Good Ethiopian restaurant options though!

Thanks everyone! It’s great to get the opinions of Americans. I went to Washington for a high school history trip and loved it, so it would be nice to go back as an adult. Chicago sounds great, though, and we’d be able to put TWO checkmarks on our bucket list of MLB stadiums! I took a recent trip to Chicago. I only had an extra day and half to sight-see. I went to the art museum and it was amazing. Definitely worth the trip. I also went to Devon street, millennial park, and walked along the Navy Pier. There were a couple different festivals going on. I saw a lot of people boating in lake Michigan or kayaking on the Chicago river. I wish I had more time, there, but I flew alone and I had to get back. Otherwise I would have checked out some more museums. I met some really fun people and saw some old friends. Chicagoan are awesome. But I’m really glad I didn’t rent a car because parking seems expensive and time-consuming. I’m glad I took the train.

Work and more work. But work is taking me on a Global Tour. A couple of weeks ago I was in Paris, this week I’m in China. Next week Brazil. It’s exhausting and I really don’t get to do tourist stuff, but I’m gathering an impressive amount of sleeping masks and plastic combs from the business class pouches. Let me just say that next time I make a trip like this – I’m going to aim for October when it’s not 95 degrees and humid in every country.

I will get to see my fam for a couple of days as my mom is using my apartment while she visits friends in NY. So that’s cool.
